We do have 2 Freshmen  starting for the Dukes. It is more of a grind for those kids than for  seniors in general I would  believe. Even our upper classmen have not played a full season like this one before for the most part. Who, outside of Mike Lewis, has really played this many minutes before? Anyone? Maybe there is something to the running out of gas theory. Anyway...Go Dukes!

It is a grind for every team, not just the Dukes.  Every team has freshman and other players with limited experience this year.  According to KenPom DU is better off than most A10 team.

CLK, there is no such stat in KenPom for conference play. I don’t trust this tweet.
From KenPom for the entire season:
Experience: Dukes #226 - 1.57 years
(A10 teams with less experience - Saint Louis, UMass, Dayton, George Mason and Richmond)

To me, the experience stat leaves room for interpretation. For example, according to this stat, our center position is loaded with experience, with JRob and Chas being seniors. We know that is not the case. And certainly doesn’t translate into a strength due to experience at that position.

I think it might be more mental fatigue than physical.  I don't think that any one of these players, perhaps excepting Tarin Smith with Bob Hurley, ever had a coach as intense as KD is 100% of the time on the basketball court.  The grind of learning new everything with an extremely high standard can wear and burn out the team quite a bit.  The last time that the Dukes had 7 days off, after the Southern Illinois game, resulted in the Dukes playing their best basketball all year (wins over Dayton, GW and Fordham).  I have a good feeling and I'm hopeful that the current break will be as good for the Dukes.

Yeah I don't really see any downside to playing FBS money games. You get good experience, cash, and the potential for lots of exposure if you win one of the them. ESPN still plays the clips from Ap State's win over Michigan some ten years later. Recruits want to play in these games too.

There is an increased chance of injury when you go up against programs with a depth (more scholarships) of players who are bigger/faster/stronger. Playing Hawaii/UMass is a bit different in this regards than playing Alabama/Auburn, but you hope the Dukes come out of it relatively unscathed- both physically and mentally.

Unless you beat a blue blood program, you’re not going to see highlights down the road. Liberty’s win over Baylor last season was just a blip on the national scene. The same would apply to the Dukes winning either one of these games.

This article provides an insight into these games:

ED and Judge, to me, the tone and the response from John Henderson sounded like a bit more than coming back from last year’s injuries. Hope I’m wrong.

Men's Basketball » 5 GAMES LEFT!!!! » 2/12/2018 9:19 pm

The best case scenario is 5-0, if the Dukes can get back to their high level of play that they showed during the first 3 games of the A-10 conference and in a couple of other games (Rhode Island in particular). They showed that they could win at home and on the road; and they were able to control games defensively. They could beat anyone in conference.  I just don't know what we are going to see out of this break.

Realistically, best case is that I can see them winning 2 or 3 games out of the 5.  I can't see them beating St. Bonaventure in Olean; and I don't like the matchup with Davidson at all - we are struggling against teams that have great ball movement and can shoot the 3 (49.3% of Davidson's shots come from the 3 accounting for 43.6% of their points - plus they get assists on 62.4% of their FG's - all three of these metrics rank Top 15 in the country). This one could hurt.

I like the Dukes against Saint Joseph's, even on the road; the Hawks struggle on offense and if the Dukes can come back fresh from this week and play some defense once again, the Dukes can win an ugly one here.  I also like the Dukes on the road again at UMass. The Dukes should be able to put up some points here, and they need to limit Pipkins. UMass is using a 6 man rotation, so if the Dukes are back to playing tough defense, we should be able to wear them down a bit and win another ugly one on the road.

The swing game to me is Saint Louis. The Dukes were pretty much dominated by the Billikens on the road. Now that the Dukes have seen the style of play and the coaches make adjustments, is that going to be enough to swing this game in the Dukes favor? The Dukes are going to have to defend a hell of a lot better in this one too if they are going to win; and they can't shoot 33% from the field like they did in Saint Louis. To me, this game is squarely a toss up and I just can't make a call.

At this point of the season, I would take 2 wins - finishing the regular season at 17-14; 8-10 i

Ice hockey met their challenge too. So all 3 athletics challenges were met. A total of $58,688.18 was raised for Athletics; and the overall total raised for the University was $292,858.

The law school also met their challenge, so former Dukes star Garry Nelson had to ante up $2,500 to fulfill his challenge.

Men's Basketball » Duquesne Day of Giving » 2/08/2018 10:11 pm

The football match is now off the board since $10,000 was raised.

Ice Hockey is looking for 17 donors of any amount to get a $500 challenge donation.

Athletics has raised nearly $50K so far today.

Men's Basketball » Duquesne Day of Giving » 2/08/2018 8:17 pm

No problem, Judge. I was glad that I could donate to the these programs today.

You can take Swimming and Diving off of the matching list since they raised the $10,000 for the maximum match.

Football is about $1,000 short of their matching maximum; you guys can put them over the top.

Men's Basketball » Duquesne Day of Giving » 2/08/2018 7:04 pm

There are several matching gift challenges going on for this Day of Giving, including the following Athletic programs:
- Swimming & Diving
- Football
- Ice Hockey
Your donation today will go a lot further with these matches.

I know plenty of people just listened to KD jump all over Ray Goss. I couldn't care less that KD went out of his way to smooth it over. That was classless.

KD, if you have a staffer reading this, if you want your players to be accountable for their actions, show a little self-control & act like you've been here before.

Ray, of course, handled it like the prince & pro he is.

KD was wound tighter than a $2 watch almost the entire game; seemed like he was ready to erupt. Sounds like he did spew on Ray. I didn’t hear it. Can you provide any additional details?

Looks like some D-1 transfer talent came in at the WR and DB positions. Young Mr. Smith might have some real downfield threats to throw to.

phil95, I feel you.  Definitely don't want to complain/nitpick in year 1 in spite of seeing some of the things you mention. I also don't want to take shots at Ferry; he's gone - good riddance.  But I will disagree that they are feeling bad about themselves - Ferry was completely tone deaf; he's probably saying if they only gave him 3 or 4 more years...
