Recruiting

Busy time of year for recruiting.  JF has extended new 5 offers in the last three days for 2016 recruits, and one for 2018 to local kid Robby Carmody.

John Fulkerson

Henry Baddley (I love this name.  Can you hear Ray..."Baddley misses badly")

Justin Gorhman

Karmi Newman

Makale Carter

The Dukes have also shown interest in another 2016 local kid Sagaba Kobate
http://www.verbalcommits.com/players/sagaba-konate

There will probably be a few more in the next week. Some of the early targets have committed elsewhere or have drwan some big time interest.  Here is the full list from Verbal Commits:

Don't know much about Jamie Shaw but maybe the name is familiar to a recruiting guru like CLK.

Re: Recruiting

No guru, just interested in recruiting. Phenom Hoops is a recruiting site that has been around for a while.

With three scholarships to give next year looks like guards and small fowards getting the most action, which makes sense given who is leaving.  Got to hope, however, our bigs can develop, because bigs don't appear to be in scope.

On another note, looks like DU is not getting much love from Rothstein.  Look how far St. Louis has jumped.

Jackson is drawing attention from a much better group of schools than Fornes.

URI, which named Danny Hurley as its coach the same time we hired Ferry (remember, I was begging for Hurley t come here when Colleary was still here), seems to be ready to make a move in the conference already.

I doubt that Hurley would have come here though. Look at the difference between the two programs. URI actually has a nice facility to play in. The fact that we lionize Ron for making one NIT, while URI fired Baron for making the NIT every year tells you all you need to know about the status of the two programs.

Still, it's better than Palumbo. Where do you think a guy like Hurley is going to see the better chance to succeed, at a place that's been successful many times over the last 40 years, or one where the rare NIT trip is celebrated like a National Championship?

I don't buy that, sorry. A guy like Hurley could have legitimately turned things around here. Young enough not to be jaded, good enough to get better players here. Go look at the facilities he had at St. Benedict's when he was attracting NBA calibre players. He knows how to evaluate talent, and he has that awesome pedigree. I think a kid would play for him in the middle of the NJ Turnpike. If he came here and did what he's doing for URI, don't you think that would have woke up the administration, students, alumni and fan base?

Sure Hurley could have won here, but why come to a high risk place when you have safer options. Can a good coach win with the NY Jets? Sure, but if you think you can get the same job with the Giants, it's a no brainer. There's no reason to take the first job offered if you think a better offer will come down the road.

Re: Recruiting

You're right. Let's stick with bottom drawer candidates and hope for the best, all the while bemoaning how second rate we are as a program. It's pretty much in our DNA at this point.

My guess is that we either drop men's basketball and add women's intercollegiate shopping or simply drop down to NAIA in three years anyway.

Re: Recruiting

it appears that Ferry has again surpassed himself on another level. If you remember, he developed the
LHTM (Let's Hope They Miss) defense this past year at Duquesne. He has Now done it with recruiting. With him throwing out all of these offerings to players in a second or third tier he has now developed the spaghetti recruiting method.  Throw enough offers out there and hope one sticks to the wall.
This program, from the lame duck President increasing the losing coaches contract through the past work of Thank Heaven He Left Amodio is a frickin mess.

Re: Recruiting

Let's be fair.  I have no problem with the kids they are  trying to recruit, or how many offers are out.  From what I see these are all pretty high quality players.  Sometimes they do stick, you never know what attracts a player.  Look at the list of offers Sanders had.  Unless you are a Duke or North Carolina that can just place an order, that's how recruiting works.  This is what DU is paying the guy to do and providing the resources for.  We should all hope he is successful.  The bottom line is Ferry will sink or swim based on his own efforts (Coaching, motivating, teaching and recruiting the right players).  I just want to see the Dukes win, so at this point (lacking any other option other than walking away) I am rooting for him.  I have said this may times, this year is critical for him.  He must win, and prove his own words that it is DU's time to get into the A10 mix (move up).  No more excuses, just getting the job done.

Exactly right on all counts. If you look at the other schools listed, most also have a ton of offers out there. It's a game of musical chairs. Most kids want to play at as high a level as possible. As a result, they will try to wait as long as they can before commiting. As the P5 schools miss on certain targets, they will offer spots to some of the kids they have on hold. For others, the offer will never come. If they wait too late, they may end up at a lower level than they would have had they taken their best early offer. It's basically a gamble. Some will take the chance, in hopes of playing at a higher level, while some will play it safe, and take that early offer. It's the same way for the schools. If Ferry only offers his very top choices, and they don't bite, he ends up with low major leftovers. You may really want a handful of 3 star guys, but if there are some 2 star kids that you think can play at this level, you have to offer them, and see what happens.

Re: Recruiting

I hope you are both correct, but we haven't seen him succeed. I guess what bothers me is when he complained about the kids so much last year with his Teflon attitude. He is the one who recruited them and he did a piss-poor job of teaching them defense.

Re: Recruiting

FAM, he may or may not succeed.  At this point, however, I am just giving him the benefit of the doubt. There are no more excuses for him.  He has to start to win this year.

Back to recruiting, I believe this is the first JUCO we offered. He is a sharp shooting SF from Florida.

CLK, I think he has to start winning as well. What's annoying is the constant whining. Last season has been over for 5 months, and a new season is on the horizon. What is the point of these people who are constantly harping on last season? Ferry knows the team failed last year, and that the defense was horrible. How about looking forward instead. If the team gives us more of the same, I won't question anyone's right to vent. Until then, a wait and see attitude makes more sense. This is the year where most expected us to have a solid team. Until that fails to happen, I'm giving Ferry the benefit of the doubt.
