The End of an Era (Error??)

30 point loss to Richmond?

Some have brought up the point that maybe Duquesne should drop down to the NEC or Patriot League - others are convinced that with the right coach the Dukes will rise again.

Perhaps Duquesne shoud drop down to the level of Carnegie Mellon -- they DO have a basketball team - are 10-6 -- just because you don't read about them in the PG or Trib Review doesn't mean they don't exist.

Duquesne WOULD continue to offer the players in the program the free education they presently receive - those who wish to transfer could obviously do so -  the NCAA would probably waive their idiotic rule that requires transfers to sit out a year in this case.

Some have pointed out the situation at Gonzaga and how a good hoops team benefits the University -  in one of the countless books I've read about sports etc - when Bob Knight was terminated at Indiana - while donations to the athletic department went down -  the increase in other donations to the school MORE than covered the drop in the athletic department.

Duquesne could avoid the slippery slope that is becoming college athletics with the stipend/pay for play or whatever you wish to call it -  Sure Alabama football , Kentucky basketball can cover the additional funds - what about the female swimmers at Ohio U -  or the men's volleyball player at James Madison -  are the universities going to be able to give them $$ in addition to the room and board -  If Richmond now gives a player X as part of the package - St Bonaventure gives them Y and La Salle gives them Z -  do disparities in the A-10 make the playing field less level?

The REAL losers would probably be the lady hoopers who have remained competitve - however they would be given the same choices - take advantage of their education and still play some basketball (while not at the same level) or transfer without penalty and continue to enjoy the benefits -  they probably understand that hoops is NOT their "Lifes Work" as Chas Noll used to say.

Finally others on the board lament that Palumbo Center makes it difficult to compete -  with Duquesne dropping down Palumbo Center might even become the TAJ MAHAL of facilities on our level -  as for attendence it would obviously drop some as us middle aged frustrated fans would no longer show up - however student attendence might actually INCREASE - as some students might feel the athletes are more like us everyday Joes and Janes as opposed to a privileged crowd!!

Re: The End of an Era (Error??)

I don't think moving to the NEC would be the right move. We have MAC, NEC& CAA players now. The reason they choose to come here is they can play in a better league and play TV Games. If we move to NEC, the players we have now will goto the CAA/MAC, and goto towson, delaware, akron, Ohio U, schools that make the NCAA. Put money into the program and THEY(Duquesne) WILL MAKE MONEY BACK. Something called R.O.I. It works a lot of schools why wouldn't it work for duquesne.

Re: The End of an Era (Error??)

I think you guys are off course. We have some pretty good talent right now. What we lack is coaching skills.  Player development is an issue. More importantly in the short run, get OUT OF THE ZONE defense. If you want a high-speed offense, you CAN"T play a non-pressing zone. These offenses and  defenses are not compatible.

Ferry's BS about his players not being capable of playing man-to-man is an absurdity and an embarrassment. Ferry recruited these guys,He needs to train them and get them out there. Have any of you ever heard this excuse before from other programs: "My players aren't good enought to play man-to-man defense"?

How does that resonate with the team?  Would you be confident playing for a coach who thought so little of his roster (which he recruited)?

There IS A-10 talent on this team. This season has been a disaster, but it really isn't because we don't have players.

Re: The End of an Era (Error??)

Well, we do have players who:

1. Can't make free throws

2. Can't defend the three

3. Can't  close out wins at home with double digit leads late in the game

We you recruit they all look good on paper. The latest is  McKoy pre game story in PG now Dukes are undersized on front line? 6-11 starter, forwards at 6-8, 6-8, 6-7, are undersized?

We could win with 6-4 1/2  BJ Monterio sliding into the post in RE era.
When you have A-10 talent you win.

Re: The End of an Era (Error??)

Your items 2. and 3. are 2-3 zone and coaching problems. Insistence on staying with a defense that every team shoots right over and sets school records for 3-point shooting is a coaching problem. Your next point is more about player development. Another coaching problem.

There is height on the team, but the coach plays a 6'3" forward 32 minutes a game.

Excuses like "our team is young" is a coach's b.s.
