Longwood

Looks like Longwood is on the non conference schedule

Re: Longwood

Pretty good shot of a packed Palumbo Center with that post. I see the banners for the Chuck Cooper Classic and ESPNU, guessing that was the Saturday night game against Richmond in 2011-12? Still the only time the Dukes ever beat Richmond in A10 play.

Re: Longwood

As for Longwood, 4 wins against D-1 competition last year, RPI of 335, graduated 3 of their top 4 scorers. But a few cupcakes won't kill us.

Re: Longwood

Remember....for every "money" away game there has to be a "cupcake" home game to balance the schedule.  There is no way a non-cupcake is coming to DU without a corresponding home game for them or there will be a significant financial cost for DU.  KD will play in early season tournaments chasing big time programs on neutral courts....this will necessitate a few cupcakes.  The key is getting the right flavor of cupcake....some local team or a team that can help you prepare for the real season in some way...ie some cupcakes may not have good bigs but they have fast, penetrating guards or shoot the 3 really well.

Re: Longwood

It would seem Longwood is the new basketball home of Nicholas Kratholm....

Re: Longwood

He made a visit late in May but then I never heard anything more about it.  Hope he does well there and sure wish he could play against us this fall, but as a transfer, obviously, he won’t.  At least he remained in D1 at lower level

NEVER count anyone out as a "cupcake." Remember Mansfield State a couple of years ago. I'm sure our beloved Dukes are considered "cupcakes" on other team's schedules this year. Regardless of who the opponents are on a given night, we will be there to support the Dukes. Hope you all will be there too.

We're Notre Dame's cupcake, but they don't realize the cupcake has a rock in it.

Re: Longwood

Would Kratholm, a walk-on, have to sit out?

Re: Longwood

If he really was a walk-on at Duquesne--remember he was officially announced as being on scholarship--then he would be eligible to play at Longwood this coming season. Per the NCAA:

If you are transferring to a Division I school for any of the previously-listed sports, you may be eligible to compete immediately if you were not recruited by your original school and you have never received an athletics scholarship.

I think the last thing posted on this topic contained a linked Duquesne Duke piece speculating about the scholarship situation for next year. This was in early April, before Kratholm announced his departure. That article indicated that Kratholm was probably on academic scholarship at DU. I don't remember seeing anything definitive that said otherwise.

I'm referring to the press release issued April 25, 2017 which identified Kratholm as a) a member of the 2017 recruiting class and b) someone who had signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball at Duquesne. You have to be on athletic scholarship to sign an NLI. Now I don't know how "definitive" a press release is, but this was the only official communication by Duquesne on Kratholm's status and it indicated that he was on athletic scholarship and was a recruited athlete. There's only been speculation that he was really a preferred walk-on on academic scholarship, speculation which Duquesne refused to address, though I believe there was someone on this board who claimed that Dave Harper did confirm this at an alumni meet-and-great early last season.

We'll soon find out one way or another. If he can play this year for Longwood, he was never on athletic scholarship at Duquesne. If he has to sit out, then he likely was or otherwise met the NCAA's definition of a recruited athlete. My point is that until we get confirmation of his status for the upcoming season, I don't think anyone really knows what the deal was last year.

Re: Longwood

Per Lancers Blog, Kratholm will not be eligible for the 2018-19 season. Still no official word from the school (though the Longwood coach did retweet Verbal Commits' announcement of the transfer) nor is he listed on Longwood's roster, which appears to be at its full complement of scholarship players. And that's about as far down the rabbit hole as I'm going on this.

Re: Longwood

Agree Fjhryn with your point about cupcakes and Duq81 I think ND deserves credit for scheduling an A10 "high major "as well as Pitt and Penn State.I don't think you should assume ND sees Duquesne as a "cupcake:. Recall the  renewed relationship between the schools through football and Duquesne letting ND use Rooney Field their last  few visits for practice etc.
