Opponants Upgrade Moved Duquesne To a New Level

Did I hear Alex right that Duquesne has scheduled Boston College for a future game?

Sweet if they did to add to WVU, Hawaii, UMass, South Dakota State, and New Hampshire among others.  Many writers brought up that the Dukes losses were mostly against  FBS team this year.  The money from these games helps the program too...may help buy some more bleachers for Rooney for on top of the patio areas on top of the home side and some on the visitors.  Rooney would make a great compact horseshoe stadium some day.  Just don’t eliminate the beer garden entirely.

The two FBS games this year REALLY showed this team a new level of play and challenged them to match it... and they did!

Link to Duquesne's future non conference games-  WVU, Hawaii, YSU, New Hampshire, Charlotte... no BC... must not have heard correctly.

Re: Opponants Upgrade Moved Duquesne To a New Level

The Dukes will have less ability to schedule up when the NEC adds LIU and Merrimack.

LIU Post is playing Slippery Rock in D2 playoffs this year.  After Idaho's move from FBS down to FCS and Northern Alabama's move from D2 up to FCS, these are the only two projected additions to FCS.

Merrimack is moving up to FCS from D2 (see other thread re: scheduling up)

Merrimack is a smaller Catholic College north of Boston that went 5-5 this year in D2, losing to Bloomsburg, PA.   This will not help the NEC's reputation at first but gives more motivation to schedule up to compensate.

On the other hand, the conference adds media market strength in New York and Boston.

Can't sound too cocky though... their football fields seat more that Rooney... but then, so does every other in the FCS.

Hmm good info here. I really wish they would revive the A-10 football conference. The idea of playing the likes of LIU and Merrimack  in lieu of scheduling FBS opponents isn't very inspiring.

Agreed! I don't think these "additions" add anything. I like scheduling FCS programs and better FBS schools. Maybe NEC can make scheduling these teams optional for a couple years. They'll be no serious threat to win the conference for a decade or more. If ever.

Re: Opponants Upgrade Moved Duquesne To a New Level

FWIW, LIU Post finished their regular season undefeated but were promptly upset in a 2-7 match up against Slippery Rock (Western PA REPRESENT). They might not be bad next season, but obviously unlikely to raise the profile of the conference.

Merrimack is full on transitioning so they shouldn't be on the schedule next season.

You have raised good points in that this takes away ability to schedule tougher opponents, so I will hereby get back on my soapbox and speculate that we are attempting to leave the NEC.

I hate myself for loving you. Quoting me without the expressed written consent of the National Hockey League is prohibited.

Re: Opponants Upgrade Moved Duquesne To a New Level

An A 10 Football Conference would be pretty strong.  Much stronger than the NEC and tougher to win every year.  Trouble would be pulling the schools out of the already strong CAA like Richmond and Rhode Island.

It may be easier to join the CAA like Albany did but our stadium isn't in their league.

Current Memebrs in FCS
Duquesne
Dayton
Fordham (They owe the conference!)
Richmond
Rhode Island
George Mason
Davidson
Virginia Commonwealth-  currently a club team but they have talked of running football.

Other Possible
Georgetown
Albany
Butler
Monmouth
Valparaiso would be a great add for both football and basketball.
St.Louis would be happy with a Valpo add.  They had a D-1 team then a club team.

My picks:

Richmond
Rhode Island
George Mason
Davidson
Georgetown
Albany
Butler

That's 10 schools (I used all of my toes except one to count).
