Yeah, they want the fans down low and together so it looks better on TV. Hence the GA tickets.

OK, great, we should limit Toppin's alley-oops. All good and well. But he's good a decent mid-range game, can make open 3s, and his ball-handling for a big is outstanding. Dynamite in transition. He's a lottery pick. Maybe a top-five guy. You have to limit what he does, but you can't completely deny him. Too much worries about him, and Crutcher, Watson or Landers (all 40+% from 3-point range) kill you.

Dayton is really, really, really good, and would be an NCAA tournament team without Toppin. We will have to play our best to beat them. But we can do it. Have to throw offensive wrinkles in to make Toppin work at that end. Can't make it easy on him. If Saint Joe's can stay close with them, we can beat them, especially on our home court.

They shot 40 of their 54 field-goal attempts from behind the arc against St. Bonaventure. They're probably going to do that tonight, too. Here's hoping they don't make a truckload (and considering they shoot it at .309, they shouldn't). Get out on the shooters, box out, stay patient, win going away.

You guys are overlooking Bona. They struggled without Osunniyi. Since he came back, they're easily there with us, St. Lou, and Richmond. Both games will be wars.

Yeah, would definitely include Bonaventure in this formula. Split with Dayton, split with Bonaventure, lose at VCU, beat Richmond at home, split the road games against St. Louis and Rhode Island, win all the other games was the formula I had in mind. So no worse than 14-4 in league play and then win at least one and preferably two (which would put us in the conference championship game) in the conference tourney. Not easy, but doable.

Definitely not overlooking the Bonnies, but they're at 116 in KenPom and 147 in NET right now, and a loss to a 100+ team is a bad loss for NCAA purposes. Hopefully, by year's end, they are in the top 100. I assume they will be. It's a shame Osunniyi got hurt and they lose a few games they had no business losing in the non-con.

They rotated liberally last night. Nobody played more than 25 minutes other than Sin (33 minutes) and Marcus (31) and Maceo (29). They're young guys. Although it would be nice to have stayed out this way, I don't think fatigue shouldn't be a factor on Saturday

Pump the brakes there chief. We weren't even in the NIT in the last projection I saw and a win against a 240-something isnt moving the needle. This was fun, but be reasonable. Duquesne is probably at least 12 wins out of the bubble

Yeah, I think we're going to need to get at least one win in our three games vs. Dayton and VCU and not slip up too much elsewhere (maybe two losses max against the rest of the conference schedule) to be in the NCAA at-large bid discussion. And of course, get at least 1-2 wins in Brooklyn.

Any non-auto-bid NCAA campaign likely needs to include no more than four league losses. None of the losses -- at least at the moment -- can come against teams other than Dayton(2), VCU, Richmond, Saint Louis and URI. Minimum 2-4 in those games, likely needing one of the wins against a ranked UD team. Then they would need to probably make the A-10 final and lose to either UD or VCU (or another team that seems like an NCAA lock at that point). That's the recipe. It's complicated. But at least we can talk about it.

Go 26-7 overall, 14-4 in the conference, with no bad conference losses and an appearance in the tournament title game, and they're tough to keep out.

From Joe Lunardi on the broadcast, for those who might not have heard:

"I actually think they’re better, and not because this is a blowout. Their length is more impressive in person. The trouble it causes defensively. And they have more ways to score than I thought. Sometimes a balanced offensive team like that doesn’t stand out on paper, but it’s more noticeable up close. The Hawks haven’t had any defensive answers, but even had they played a better defensive game, I’m not sure, in fact I’m fairly certain Duquesne would have had enough answers."

"I think I had them seventh on my ballot. Sometimes you get a team where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. I think what has impressed me the most tonight is that they’re more than that. Their parts are good."

"First true road game. Not a particularly intimidating building. We’ll see when the go to the Ryan Center or when they go to the Sigel Center, or Dayton, or somewhere like St. Bonaventure. Some of the more, how do we say, unfriendly arenas in the league. Can they split those kind of road trips? If they do, then they’re going to be in the tournament. At minimum the NIT, and that would be an extraordinary year for the program."

Ellis, maybe we saw last night why KD keeps him on the bench mostly, he needs to mature....but the ability sure does seem to be there.   How many times do you see a ref basically suggest a player be removed from the game(if thats what happened)?   Again, IDK.   Regarldess, hopefully it was a lesson learned.

It's doubtful we'll find out, but I'm really curious what he said. He was smiling the whole time, so I really didn't think it was anything too bad. It was definitely a strange situation with the ref though. It seemed like he didn't want to T him up; why bother extending a game that's over all but the clock. He pointed to him and said something to Dambrot and I thought he might have been going to give him a T. Dambrot got the sub (I forget who it was) up and ready to go, but then the ref let the first shot go without the sub happening. Then when the second one went up I thought it was all forgotten, until he stopped the game to force the sub. I think the forced sub was instead of a technical, but it was definitely a strange situation. I'm not sure I've ever seen that before.

luckymcd, thanks for the eyewitness report. From watching on the stream, I had pretty much the same thoughts - I couldn’t be sure because the camera shot cut away a couple of times. I’m with you, I don’t recall ever seeing that before.

James talks. A lot. All game. I think the ref had some rabbit ears, and even came over once during the second half to say something (not directly to James, but to his end of the bench). Then, he comes in with 40 seconds left and is playing with 10 times the energy of everyone else on the court. That ref just wanted to get out of Dodge without any kind of altercation, and having James sit the last few seconds (without a T) was what he decided to do. It didn't look like KD was upset with James afterwards.

I won't miss Martelli, he always had his inferior teams ready to beat us in the conference tourney when we handled them in January, see last year and 2011. I wonder if a team ever won a game so easily when it gave up 26 offensive rebounds. The way Carry (with occasional help from Austin and even Steele) took Daly out of the game was sweet. He had been averaging 25 PPG in home games coming in. If St. Joe's tried anything to get him open, like screens, I didn't notice.

Was fun to watch the Dukes defend Daly in person. Sincere basically shared his uniform. Denied him the ball and was in his face if he managed to get it. Hawks did run screens to get him open, but Sin either blew them up by being too strong and quick, or a big man executed a good hedge. It was textbook stuff.

The offensive rebounds were tough, but I'll give them a break in that a lot of them came after collapsing help on Daly, which led to long 3s and odd caroms. Our guys need to box better, but it seemed like they had a bigger issue finding their man after help defense. That's correctable. When we were in position, we cleared the boards.

Most enjoyable, comfortable road game I've been to in years. Never gave them any belief. That's what good teams do to bad ones. Now, let's keep building on it.

The social media coverage, including videos set to music, player intros, interesting nuggets, all was much improved during last season. We were moving in the right direction. For it to go silent just a month before this trip makes almost zero sense. If there is a reason for it, come out and say it. A lot of people (for our standards) are calling them out, even publicly. But now we just sit here and wonder and guess and get angry.

All I know is, the athletic department in general is posting things (though even that's been light). Women's basketball posts things all the time. But our supposed marquee team, which is in the Bahamas on a team-building excursion, has nothing. It's great seeing the guys on the team posting videos and pics on their own Instagram and Twitter. But I expect more from the university.

OK, I guess I analyzed your post incorrectly. Like I said, I'm passionate about Duquesne basketball, and I'm not willing to continue to accept the status quo.

The other schools you mentioned are doing much more than Duquesne to promote their brand. That, and Duquesne's unacceptable lack of coverage since July 10th, was the real focus of my post. You took one line from what I said and attacked me personally. And you want to talk about hammers and nails.

Pushing back is fine. I like a good, well-thought-out discussion and even an argument. But you couldn't stop at that. You had to get juvenile.

I've been a Duquesne fan for 25 years. You came around when KD arrived. I've enjoyed a lot of your posts, and you bring a very interesting take on things having seen our coach and how he's operated long before he arrived at Duquesne. I appreciate that. Just like I'd hope you appreciate those of us who have suffered for countless years (quite of few on here for way longer than myself). Let's just keep it civil, OK?

No, I'm a passionate fan of my alma mater, who attended almost every game during the Edgar/Porter days when I was there. I have followed and attended games almost every chance I've gotten since graduating and moving out of the area. I work in public relations and social media. It's my job to do the things that I don't think Duquesne is doing very well right now.

You said this is how other schools are handling the event. I dove deeper to get more information. To me, it seemed like you were making the point that Duquesne wasn't doing anything differently than the other schools. Two points to that:

1. Yes, they are doing things differently. They haven't used their social media channels to promote the team and what it has been doing since July 10th, including this trip to the Bahamas. The other teams have.

2. Even if those schools weren't doing much, why shouldn't we strive to be better? That's been a Duquesne problem for years. Striving for mediocrity. I thought it was changing.

I apologize if you took what I said too personally. And for a while I considered that maybe there were NCAA guidelines hindering it. But if that's the case, check out those feeds from Furman and Drake, or DePaul in Italy, or really any other school taking these trips. It's clearly allowed.

Frankly, I'm tired of people accepting how Duquesne has always done things. You're welcome to your opinion, of course. However, I suggest you not make personal jabs toward someone's education, especially when that person actually did more research than you did. I didn't take any personal shots at you. All I said was that you were making excuses. It came off that way, as you used the example of what other schools were or were not doing. You then decided to get juvenile. Don't post something on a message board and then not expect to get criticized when you haven't provided the full information.

Maybe I care too much. If so, I'm sorry, moderators.

Check out these schools' Twitter feeds. All kinds of photos and information either from their trips or otherwise. Ours is complete silence since July 10th. It's unacceptable.

Full coverage of Temple's games and experiences in the Bahamas.

https://twitter.com/GeorgetownHoops
Georgetown leaves later this week. They'll have coverage, too. They have video of their Top Golf outing and other things from the summer.

https://twitter.com/TexasTechMBB
Texas Tech doesn't go away until next week. They have video profiles of all of their guys going up. I'm sure they'll cover the trip. as well.

Check out the Twitter and Instagram feeds of schools like Furman and Drake, who are documenting their trips. Stop making excuses for Duquesne by saying other schools aren't promoting it. They could at least be posting photos and staying engaged. They aren't. They need to do better.

They actually defended Christmas well in that Championship game; but got beat by the other guard who was not a good shooter. The guy just had the best shooting day of his life that day. They also had trouble with the Temple center, a foreign player, who was awkward, but very tall. He got some easy baskets due to our lack of height.
I’m sure someone can fill in some of the Temple names; but that is my recollection.

The most interesting part of that tournament was the fact that RE surprised everyone by backing off the run-and-gun style and playing a very patient, half-court style. It was a masterful coaching move by Ron that came so close to putting us in the NCAA tournament.

Eh, they didn't defend Christmas well at all in the first half. He had 29 points, including 20 before halftime. Sergio Olmos was the awkward center. He gave us fits because of his size. Had 14 and 9. Ryan Brooks hit four threes for them, including a few big ones down the stretch when we made a few runs at them.

We were only down six with 3:50 to play, then missed two free throws and four field goal attempts on the next five possessions when neither team scored. The opportunity was there. I think the four games in four days killed us there, as we were every bit as good as Temple.

I think we all can admit that Bona is not a good matchup for us. Their length forces us into an outside game, and they do a pretty good job closing out on shooters. And they give us very little on the offensive glass, which has been a huge positive in games where our 3s aren't going down.

The Dukes would be best to fall on the opposite side of the bracket of VCU and Bona. I think we match up better with Dayton and Davidson. That likely means finishing sixth or seventh, which should be achieved with one more victory. Last time we finished seventh, the tournament was a pretty fun ride.

All this goes out the window, though, if Sin can't get back for the tournament. We're just OK with out him, but very dangerous with him.

Going to be tough if Sincere can't go again. Bonnies are playing really well and shooting it much better than they did at Palumbo.

And in Olean, I'm not sure the officials will let Hughes play enough minutes for 18 and 10.

I believe in this team, but this is going to be a really tough spot to win. Have to play the same kind of defense we did against them earlier to stick around. I'll take my chances if we are within five in the last five minutes.

I feel like we're probably NCAA or bust at this point. We have no chance at the NIT because of the criteria mentioned above. And we aren't likely to be willing to host in the CBI because they want to get started on the new arena as soon as the women's A-10s are over. So, the only possibility would be to go CBI as a road team, if they get invited.

His defense is good and he looks to be a better shooter than Frankie. Give him some extended time.

The one thing that bothers me about Williams is that more than a few times he is in no hurry getting back on defense. Tends to jog back at times.

He's not the only one. Our transition defense has been bad. That needs to be fixed. All it takes is hustle and awareness.

Last nights shooting was brutal.
Wade had more air balls than shots hit the rim I think.
Play norman and bizeau, if they get hot, problem solved.  If the whole team is cold, then its a loss.

Wade was 1 for 4. Two of the misses were in-and-out. It was the most confident I've seen him shoot the ball all season. He needs to play and improve on the fly if we're going to win games down the stretch. He plays more than Norman because KD trusts him more on the ball (which I agree, is shaky) and defensively. Norman plays off ball, so he needs to play with either Sin or TDM. I'd have given him some more minutes for Frank last night, though.

In earlier games, I thought Norman looked good in a pressing defense. We seem to play better when we press. So maybe there's more of a role there. But if our press gets broken, it's super easy layups. We don't recover well. So, double-edged sword. We use it to make these comebacks, though, so I'd try to use it a little more early in games.

I really did not see that.  I thought Williams played hard and had a heck of game with 15 points, 8 rebounds 4 steals.  I wish however that he would have drove into the moving defender on the final shot to possible get foul if he missed the shot, but it was a bang bang play and just got it off.  Great effort.

Eric played a fantastic second half. On the last shot, though, he wasn't going to get a foul call on a drive unless it was a hammering. The stripes let all of that go for the most part. Hughes had a few blocks down the stretch that were probably fouls on the body and the whistles were silent. Eric got a good shot. He probably makes that about 4 out of 10 times, and with 4.6 seconds to go the full court, that's a good percentage shot.
