One Duquesne recruit for 2021 I am actually excited about- 6'2 forward Estzer Madar from Budapest Hungary

I think Duquesne is playing about as well as it can, given the talent level.  Perhaps some favorable match-ups in the A-10 Conference could put the Dukes in a position like they were last season to compete for the title and an NCAA bid. I do believe they are a better team, both inside and on the perimeter, so anything is possible.

One aspect of the game not reported was some impressive work down on the block by the freshman, Johnson.

If one of the coaches can work with her footwork, she can become a real presence next season for the Dukes.

Two keys to the La Salle game: 1) Watch La Salle's post.  If she is not as athletic or aggressive as GW's post, then Laia has a good opportunity to get better position down low, which will typically result in more accurate close-in shots.  2) Laia's improved shot selection should free up the defense a bit. Hopefully there will be less pressure (defensively), allowing Duquesne's guards to get more uncontested 3-point shots.

If those two things happen, I predict a Duquesne win tomorrow.

Was rooting hard for your team to pull out a road win. They gave it a good effort.

Several factors contributed to the loss.  1) GW's aggressive zone created problems for the Dukes' perimeter players.  2) The GW post defenders on Laia prevented her from getting the ball in the position she likes best to do her work.  As a result, you saw Laia passing the ball back out to the guards.  3) Duquesne had multiple close-in shots in the 3rd and 4th quarter, but were unable to finish at the rim (with contact), or at least draw a foul and 4) the Dukes were settling for 3's rather than working the ball for mid-range shots.

The team plays hard but the margin for victory is narrow as long as they are committed to Matt's offensive schemes.

Oregon, Louisville and Texas A&M, the three schools that defeated Oklahoma State decisively, are all top 10 teams.  The Cowgirls may surprise, but I don't see them contending for the Big-12 title.  As dominating as the Cowgirls looked against Duquesne, their nature of their 3 losses tells you what a gap there is between the Oklahoma States of the world and the truly 'big dogs' in the country.

I hope you are right that their loss does not affect them mentally as they head into Conference play.  This (still) relatively young team may, in fact, be just fine.  On the other hand, last season's 2 opening road losses to TCU and Texas did affect the team's confidence because that team was pegged to be the A-10 Conference leader.

The good news for the Dukes is (1) expectations going into this season were much lower, (2) they exceeded non-conference expectations by winning 10 in a row and (3) they now know they can compete and defeat teams that have relatively similar talent, as are most teams in the A-10.

I think they bounce back and hopefully start a new winning streak.

Just curious why no posts and discussion about the Oklahoma State game.

I personally thought the team played hard throughout the game and as well as they could that afternoon against an opponent with simply too much quickness, athleticism and size.

I commend Laia who battled her taller opponent down in the block - and scored.

Duquesne will obviously not face a team like Oklahoma State in the A-10..

I watched your team on espn1.  Duquesne played Kennesaw State's game for three quarters, then (once again like the St. Francis comeback), put their foot on the gas and dominated the fourth.

Kennesaw State's posts were superior to the Dukes' in terms of athleticism and skill sets, but Duquesne's perimeter players outplayed their guards.

The final stats were not available when I posted this, but (clearly), the most valuable player on the court was Libby Bazelak.  She does it all: score, pass, rebound; but most-importantly, do the little things that give Duquesne the edge at the end of the game.

Oklahoma State will be a different challenge on Monday, but for now, time to celebrate! 10 in a row is quite an accomplishment for this very young team.  Congratulations!

Dukes on a 9-game winning streak in pretty good company, matching the #1 team in the country (Stanford 9-0).

Not bad at all!

Agree with A83 about Sole and Canon.  Paige has the best RELEASE of the ball (among the Dukes) at the foul line.  When you think of the foul shots Laia missed, she would have scored over 40.

I would bet Coach Dan talked to the team about their poor defense against St. Francis who exploited the Dukes' man to man as too many players got easy or uncontested shots at the rim.  The zone worked slightly better but I wonder why Duquesne's perimeter players did not have their hands up- like they did against Cornell.

The other comparison I will make is that in the Cornell game, against a very physical team, the Duquesne players (defensively) played up in their faces, crouched, and were very responsive to Cornell's motion offfense.  St. Francis ran a poor man's version of a motion offense but often caught Duquesne flat-footed.  I'm hopeful that when the game film is reviewed, the coaches will point out the difference and get the players' attention.

I wonder if we might see a 3-2 zone somewhere down the line instead of a 2-3?

Coming from behind in the 4th quarter was admirable and remaining mentally tough against an inferior opponent is not the easiest thing to do.  Was this a 'trap' game?  Hopefully this was a good lesson about the importance of consistency, no matter who the opponent is.

9 in a row (no matter how it's done) is quite an accomplishment.  Congratulations to the Dukes!  Keep rolling!

This should be win #9.  St. Francis is not very good this season and they're not playing @ their gym, so the Dukes should roll. In the spirit of continuous improvement, I'd like to see a strong 4th quarter, which has been a bit of a problem area for the team during the win streak.

Yes, the physicality of the team is apparent at all positions, but especially with your guards.  Not to take anything away from the previous guard combo which generated a ton of points, Amanda, Libby and now a healthy Nina Aho, are strong and do not get pushed around.  In fact, all three of them have the ability to score inside while absorbing punishment as well as shoot the three.  That, along with their improved defensive tenacity, is a big reason for the Dukes' success.

I'll speak for myself on this, but I have not seen this kind of physicality and toughness from Duquesne in a long time.  I would not be surprised if Assistant Coach Vanessa's mentoring the guards is contributing to the performance.  A great move to get her on the staff.

Most of you have watched the team more than me, since I am out in California, but from my perspective, the best defensive game Duquesne has played on the road this season against a quality opponent who was very physical.  The Dukes matched their physicality.

I have complained about Duquesne's man-to-man defense in the past and though there were a few lapses, their man-to-man has improved significantly.

They are playing like a tough road warrior team.  Their offense is now multi-dimensional.  They can shoot threes, but they're not relying on the 3-ball as their primary weapon (a huge improvement).  They can post inside and drive to the hoop.

Most-importantly; they are playing with attitude.

I just finished listening to Akron HC Melissa Jackson's post-game interview and here was her analysis:

!) Duquesne's physicality bothered us; 2) They made an effort to get the ball into #13 (Laia), who is a very good post and then kicked (the ball) it out for open, uncontested shots; 3) Their transition game hurt us; 3) They boxed us out really well on the defensive board; 4) In an answer to a question, Coach Jackson offered kudos to Dan and his ability to recruit foreign players as well as local players; 5) We did not make them uncomfortable.

Sorry I didn't post the link here, but go to Akron's website and you can see/hear the entire post game interview.  A very encouraging assessment from an opposing coach on Duquesne's performance.

Continuous improvement leads to positive results. Strong performances from two front-line players, good shooting percentages and few turnovers are typically good signs for a Duquesne team.

Six in a row. Congrats.

Out here on the West Coast, but following the Dukes and hoping the winning streak continues.

In a way, not having a home court this season may indeed be a (road warriors) mental benefit.  For me, keys to victory will be: 1) smart/aggressive play;  2) rebounding; 3) preventing dribble penetration to the hoop; 4) inside-outside ball movement; and 5) finding players who have less-contested/easier shots while limiting difficult shots.

Keep it rolling.

For an athletically-challenged team, their mental toughness was superior to Lafayette's.

With all due respect, I would never call their (current) zone formidable, but it made Lafayette have to work harder to get their shots off and limited the number of uncontested drives to the basket.  Hopefully the zone can be a little tighter (OR), create more pressure on the outside to make their opponents more uncomfortable..

Your freshman, Hamilton, is (potentially) a future dominating player.

Good luck against Pittsburgh.  Hope you get 4 in a row.

When Duquesne went to zone (though it was a 'soft' zone), there were far fewer drives to the basket by the Iona guards.  On offense, Duquesne's bigs were having trouble establishing good position on the block, but the few times when the Dukes employed a high/low post, there was less pressure.

It will be interesting to see if any adjustments are made for the Lafayette game.

Wish the team well.

I am out in California and will be attending Stanford women's season opener so I (unfortunately) can't watch the Dukes' game with Kent State.

Someone please let me know if Bernada Rreshpja gets in the game.  I had assumed all this time that Dan would redshirt her, but after reading her player bio, I got the sense that she indeed will be available.

I'm cautiously excited about her potential as a #2 guard.

Hoping for a strong win tonight.

These pre-season rankings mean little until the games are played.  If anything, the #9 ranking eliminates any outside pressure to play up to expectations and it gives Dan the opportunity to coach and mold a team.

With so many unknowns, the question for me will be:  Will the coaches try to fit the players into Duquesne's familiar offensive and defensive schemes or will they rebuild the offense and defense around the players' collective talents?

To give you another perspective, until (2) years ago, Stanford was a big, but methodical team.  The team was successful, but played slow.  They are still big, but the talent on the team is now so athletic and mobile and multi-dimensional, Hall of Fame Coach Tara Vanderveer ditched the old patterns and the team is now playing a fast version of the Princeton offense and a quick, aggressive defense.

I think this is a great opportunity for Dan to mold the play around the talent.  Looking forward to seeing what happens in the first few games.

From what I've heard:  Vanessa is already having a positive impact with the players.  Nina Aho and Laia are poised to be the players Dan and the coaches thought they would be when recruited.  Another encouraging note- the offense Duquesne will run may likely be different than in past seasons to better fit the size, length and talent.

I am hopeful that will translate into more post play, better post defense and better rebounding.

Also hopeful that Amaya Hamilton, with her 6'2 length and athleticism, will develop into a dominating player; something Duquesne needs to become a contender.

The lack  of a true home court will be a significant challenge, especially early.  I don't see a high scoring team, but perhaps a better defensive team and like Skeptic Al says- defense wins championships.  Would love to see a zone variation now that the eventual lineup might be bigger across the front line and the perimeter.

Final note-  If Duquesne (collectively) can substantially reduce ill-advised shots, look more for open players with better shots,  reduce guard penetration into the paint on defense and rebound the ball more effectively, this team may become an A10 surprise.

Interesting points from you and Al.

This summer Dan told me that he has noticed a trend in WBB where pure size across the front line is being replaced by more mobile and interchangeable #3's and #4's,  With that in mind, his plans for the future would be to have just a couple of true bigs, but more mobile small forwards and wings.

You and Al are spot-on with legit questions about this season and the starting five.  Personally, I would love to see your suggested lineup featuring 6'2 Hamilton, 6'4 Johnson and 6'2 Sole anchoring the front line, but I'm not sure we will see that, at least in the beginning of the season- perhaps;s down the road.

I love this time of the year when each program, no matter how successful, has their own set of challenges going into opening day.  EG- Out here in Palo Alto, CA, my Stanford team has a different problem with so much talent and depth where Coach Tara V. will have to manage sufficient playing time for all and keep them happy and motivated.

Duquesne will be so interesting to watch this season, though from afar.  Wish they would video stream some of the home games (but doubt it). Good luck to you!
