His true shooting percentage is higher than Carry's.

Thanks for the coverage, Alan.

This video gets me pumped. The most promising season in a long time begins. SOON.

Pardon the pessimism but, I will need a bunch of convincing before I agree TDM deserves the green light he has. I promise I will forever shut-up on this topic if his 2pt % gets into the mid-high 40s & his 3pt % is over 35.5% for both the conference & non-con portions of the season. He is quite a shot-maker, no doubt. I just really want him to be more judicious with his shot selection.

His non-con 3pt shooting & conference 2pt shooting were both disastrous in 18-19. With his awesome free-throw shooting & increased efficiency, he would be an absolute nightmare off the bench matchup for opponents.

The rotation of Sincere, Norman, Maceo, and a more efficient TDM would keep constant pressure on opposing defenses to contain DU backcourt scoring. That will allow the offense to face tired opposition late in games, open up driving/passing lanes, & soften opposition interior defense by discouraging backcourt sagging/help. That is a powerful combination. That is the kind of wholistic offensive dynamic that neither RE nor Ferry could make happen

I am writing about 2 or 3 shot choices per game. This is the sort of incremental improvement that upperclassmen in strong programs make from year to year.

I'm with Pittsburgh Sports Now. All of our Duquesne coverage can be found here: https://pittsburghsportsnow.com/duquesne-basketball/

I don't know when Rotroff will be cleared to practice other than he isn't yet. Originally, the word was mid-season.

Men's Basketball » Sights and Sounds from Duq MBB Practice » 10/11/2019 7:36 am

Which Hughes? Lol. Frankie Hughes is expected to miss the entire season with a knee injury. I didn't see him at practice, though I didn't stay the entire time. Mike Hughes looks fine. Maybe a touch behind some other guys as far as conditioning goes.

Maceo Austin is going to be a really, really good offensive player, even as a freshman. On defense, he's long for a guard, but not hyper-quick, so Dunn-Martin might get more playing time against teams with small, quick backcourts or teams that press. Otherwise, I'd expect Austin to start.

I'd seen Austin play before. Thursday was the first time I got my eyes on Buckley and Miller. Buckley probably won't be asked to do a lot because of the guys ahead of him, but he looked like a capable distributor.

Miller seems more likely to have a significant role this season because of the injury to Frankie. Nice 3-point stroke and seems to be a pretty heady player that sees the court well. Probably needs to add a little strength for rebounding and defense purposes.

Hey, Dukes! Came here to post this and I was beaten to the punch!

We're going to have a about a half dozen season preview-type stories at PSN over the next couple weeks, but since I was at practice yesterday, I figured I could answer any questions anyone wanted to fire my way here.

What are you hearing about Hughes physical condition and how are the three freshmen looking. Thanks in advance.

Olympic Sports » WLAX Looking Forward to Playing Pitt » 5/28/2019 11:33 am

Pitt should be announcing a WLAX coach shorty as the Panthers prepare to debut their squad for the 2020-21 season. How will a new team across town effect the Dukes?

=1rem“We’re excited at Duquesne because now we get an ACC team right down the street that we can have on the schedule every single year. From a selfish perspective, I am so excited to get just an obvious, easy rotating game on our schedule every year and as they continue to grow, so are we.” -- Dukes coach Corinne Desrosiers

Thanks for the kind words! Keith is a pleasure to work with.

It is really refreshing that we have an outlet like PIttsburgh Sports Now that keeps us up to date on the Dukes. It is also tremendous that Coach is willing to be in the forefront with such straightforward commentaries. Keith Dambrot is not afraid of the spotlight.

I'd like to settle this debate. Read everything.

We're not trying to replace the Post-Gazette and the Trib. They have resources we don't have. If I get into a story that's going to require police contacts or FOIA requests or something like that, I'm out of luck. If I need an old photo for a story on the 1977 team, I don't have one. There are indispensable functions that newspapers serve that a website like PSN could never hope to replace, at least not any time soon.

On the other hand, we have the flexibility and desire to be able to present a lot more day-to-day reporting on the team. Consider PSN a supplement -- and a vital one if you want to be fully informed on the Dukes.

Check's in the mail. Do I just make it out to El Duque or ...

Hey, Oldtimer, what about Pittsburgh Sports Now? They're doing a FAR better job than the local rags which do not send reporters to our road games (instead, they send 10-12 to Pitt games). Zac and Alan and the rest of the crew there actually reports on the team, recruits, etc. The PG and TR pick up news releases, I guess.

Not to mention the shabby treatment that we received from the PG after Ferry was fired -- including from the current reporter, who is a bit less than stellar IMHO. She doesn't even bother to doctor up the news releases. Just adds a by-line.

DKPittsburgh Sports is still providing the insight and analysis I need on the Steelers, so it's still worth the money to me. Ditto for The Athletic. And with PSN, I have all of my rooting interests covered. I've got the scoop, while you're waiting for your morning paper to land in the puddle on your porch.

Geez, I'm surprised you found this site. Did we advertise on MyFace or something?

He's always around. I've seen him take a million free throws. Lol. He's usually smiling, seems very engaged and brings some good energy to the group when everyone else is worn down from practice. Obviously, it's impossible to make any kind of projection without seeing him go live against other players.

Thanks Alan.

When you are around the facility & practice do you see James Ellis? Any insights on how he is doing?

Men's Basketball » Tuesday Practice » 1/08/2019 2:52 pm

I think the two big things it will do is open up some playing time for Wade and Norman, but it also takes away a been-there, done-that guy that could really help a young team in tight games, especially with Mike Hughes banged up. Puts a lot of pressure on Williams & Carry.

Alan - any insights on the impact of M Lewis leaving has had on the team? Chemistry? Expectations on PT? Practice? Or no impact.

Men's Basketball » Tuesday Practice » 1/08/2019 2:50 pm

It's possible, but he was not practicing with the top group. Frankie Hughes was in at the 2 spot. Rotroff was the only sub the rotated in with the top group.

Alan, thanks, do you think we will be seeing more of Lamar Norman against Fordham?

Men's Basketball » Tuesday Practice » 1/08/2019 1:29 pm

Well, my top takeaway, which I'm writing about for PSN today, is that I think the Dukes need some of their younger guys to step up as leaders.

Other than that, the Dukes spent a lot of time preparing for Fordham's unique defense. They've been playing a 3-man/tandem zone combination that has been working for them and puts a lot of stress on the four spot to be a distributor.

The young bigs still all look like young bigs, which is to say, inconsistent. Always takes times with bigger guys.

Mike Hughes is still not totally healthy. Fighting through it and you can tell. Keith said he may limit his minutes vs. Fordham.

Keith was hoarse, but it was a lot of instructing, not a lot of yelling. Fairly positive message to the team at the end. Focused on things like mental discipline.

Hey Alan,

How about 5 takeaways from today’s practice as it relates to the Fordham game or the rest of the A10 schedule?

Men's Basketball » Tuesday Practice » 1/08/2019 1:01 pm

Hey folks, I was at practice today and I figured I'd throw up a post here to see if anyone had anything they wanted to know about how things are going with the Dukes.

Men's Basketball » Lewis leaving? » 12/28/2018 3:10 pm

Unless he can stay at Duquesne and graduate by the end of the summer. Then he'd be able to transfer and play in 2019-20.

PhoenixRising2 wrote:

As it stands today, Mike could play...
2nd Half of 19-20 season (if he enrolls somewhere for January classes)
—- OR —-
the entire 20-21 season

He cannot get both unless he gets a waiver from the NCAA, in effect voiding his 12 games this junior year at Duquesne.

I wouldn't think it's out of the question that someone doesn't wait until the end of the year, either.
