Not a good sign that he wouldn’t even touch the city game.  Even a we’re working on something for the future would be better than no comment. How long until we realistically see the city game again?

I’m not going to pretend I saw this kind of jump for him, but  changing the situation only slightly would make it much less surprising. St. Bonaventure offered him out of high school. Let’s say he went there instead.

He redshirted his freshman year and played the exact minutes and put up the exact stats he did last year for us for the Bonnies. He’d be seen as a raw, but talented player that couldn’t get time because he was buried behind an all-league player. He showed his ability in his limited opportunities though.

The label would be the same, high risk/high reward. Hima is definitely still raw. I feel that shortcoming is being accentuated because his limited action was for such a bad team though.

A top 75 transfer list is crazy enough, but when that list has more than 90 names on it you can either laugh or cry at the lunacy of college sports right now.

I’m starting to wonder about Grant. I’m somewhat relieved to see him actually in a Duquesne jersey. Still no one has officially gone on the record about him yet and he hasn’t been added to the roster; both of which I would expect if he had signed rather than just committed. Normally I’d blame the typical off-season lack of updates, but Coach Joyce joined the program after Grant supposedly signed and goduquesne has an article on that.

I suspect the roster will be updated when Easley leaves because as far as I can tell we are at the limit with Easley.  Perhaps they don’t want to add Grant because it would even just temporarily put us over the limit. Now Easley declaring for the draft is only slightly less preposterous than me declaring my candidacy for president in 2024. I suspect what it really means is he’s looking to sign overseas. Of all the players from last year I thought Easley looked more displeased with Dambrot than anyone. So I really don’t expect him back. Still it is getting late into the offseason. The transfer portal deadline has passed and we are approaching the deadline to withdraw from the draft. Easley is still on the roster and Grant still isn’t.

Hima isn't/wasn't worth all the NOISE being made by our posters.  His defense was at best atrocious.  Always at least two steps behind.  He couldn't even make dunks in warm-ups.  He had exactly one game where he made multiple shots.  Not exactly a striking resume.  Obviously he was signed originally on the theory you can't teach 6'10".  But the teacher needs good students in the rest of the equation.  Hima failed in that equation.  He should have stuck to  soccer!  This is my opinion and I am sticking to it.  Nonetheless, good luck to him with Jim Boeheim and  his staff.

While I certainly respect your passion for the Dukes and your right to voice your opinions here, I can't disagree more. He made multiple FGs in five of the last six games of the season. Offense was never and will never be his calling card, but you are drastically underselling it. On a team that desperately needed rebounding, he was top 15 in conference in rebounds per minute. On a per minute basis he outrebounded guys like Tyler Burton, Osun Ossuniyi, and Luka Brajkovic. Even more impressive is his defense. He was 2nd in the entire conference (and I would guess very high nationally) in blocks per minute (and again ahead of Ossuniyi).

Now he was partly to blame for having to base his stats per minute. He is still raw even on defense, and his overaggressiveness frequently got him in foul trouble. Bottom line is this is a guy that VCU and St. Bonaventure offered out of high school and Texas A&M and Pitt were also interested in. He showed enough in his limited action with the Dukes for the second winningest coach in the history of the game to offer. Despite all that, he only got 12 minutes a game on a team in the midst of a 17 game losing streak with no other healthy player over 6'7".

There was absolutely nothing to play for in the last month of the season other than developing the team for next season. Hima is very raw, but there is definitely talent there

I’m sticking by what I said when Loyola joined (an addition I’m all in favor of by the way); Cleveland State is the most likely addition. Because there are no good expansion candidates, no addition is the most likely move though. Go to three pods, keep it open; whatever the case is we don’t have a good expansion candidate, and there’s no reason to spread the revenue thinner if we don’t have to. I expect the A-10 to go back to 14 before it goes to 16.

I am disappointed by this one too. I can’t say I’m surprised by this given the way he was handled; but he was one of the few, if not the lone player, who looked like he actually wanted to be on the floor down the dreadful stretch run of this season. I don’t remember which one of the blowouts but I remember seeing multiple players telling him multiple times to calm down since we were down like 20 with 3 minutes left. He didn’t care. He wanted to be out there playing basketball and developing his game. So I thought he’d be back. He is certainly very raw, but he was arguably already our best option at the 5 and should have gotten much more time to develop and he’d be further along.

With the most posted on thread recently being the "Team has checked out" one, it was good to see them fighting so hard for a win that in the grand scheme of things wouldn't have meant anything. Trying to win should be the absolute bare minimum at this level, but their desire had been questioned and they showed it is still there. Having said that, this was an all around bad game.

1) We are a bad team. Only because we have been so bad for so long is this game seen as an improvement. The defense was absolutely atrocious. I like the aggressiveness going after steals and blocks, but it leaves us out of position far too often for easy buckets. Speaking of easy buckets, how many times did they beat us with simple pick and rolls for wide open dunks? Even at this late point in the season the offensive gameplan seems to be a grab bag. We have multiple guys who can score, but have no semblance of an offense to get them good looks. If they aren't creating offense for themselves there is none.

2) GW is bad. Watching this game I kept having to check the standings to make sure I had them right. How this team is .500 in the A-10 is beyond me. Even their home announcers said late in the game "it's a shame someone has to win this game." Usually this kind of game is a shame someone has to lose, but neither team deserved a win.

3) The officiating was horrible. I'd say it went against us more than for us, but it was terrible in our favor a few times too. Of course no one ever thinks they fouled someone late in a game, but I think our dismay on a few was perfectly justified and the replays back that up. On the other hand Hima's charge should have been a block. I'd love to know what Bekelja did to get a T, and also wonder if the refs saw the GW big do a pull up on the rim in the second half and just let it go. Usually I say let kids be kids, but that was pretty blatant.

4) The announcers were terrible. I realize the A-10 broadcasts are local crews aired nationally, but I'd rather he

Even with an embarrassing second half, I think tonight shows the team hasn’t checked out. They want to get better and they want to win. Let’s be honest, there’s nothing left to play for this year. Maybe we beat another bad team in the first round. Perhaps we even pull off an upset in the second round. Anything more than that would take be an absolute shock. Winning the conference tourney might get us a Disney movie. Having said that the team was competing tonight. It’s notable that the lineup was much different than it’s been and I can’t help but think the changes are because of attitude. The bottom line is it worked for a half.

What concerns me more than anything about Dambrot going forward has been the lack of adjustments. As long as he’s been here we’ve been a second half team. It frequently led to frustrations wondering why we couldn’t show up ready to play right from the tip. We regularly made good second half adjustments and they paid off in many second half comebacks though. Those adjustments have been notably absent this year. For those who want to say the game has past Dambrot by I think that is more relevant than just about anything and I haven’t really seen it mentioned.

I think the line is about right. Now if I was a betting man (which I’m generally not and especially when it comes to my teams) I’d probably take Davidson to not only win, but cover. Still I think the line makes sense.

We were competitive the first time around in what was basically a road game. We lost by 11, had it down to 6 late, and outscored them 55-45 over a 27 minute span. As someone else pointed out Dambrot’s teams usually come out pretty similarly from game to game. So a similar result can be expected.

Davidson is a good team, but not one that blows teams out very often. They beat Penn, but only by 12. They beat East Carolina, but only by 9. They beat Northeastern, but only by 10 (6 less than us by the way). They beat UMass by 10 just three days after we beat them by 4. They beat Fordham by 3, LaSalle by 4, GW by 5, and St. Joe’s by 6.

Also as someone else said we are due for an upset. Even our bad teams (which this sadly but surely is) usually find some unexpected wins. In Ferry’s first year we beat Temple. In Nee’s first year we also beat Temple. In Porter’s last year we beat St. Bonaventure and in his second year we beat Xavier. It’s hard to consistently run over conference opponents even if you are the much better team.

The million dollar question is what’s different at Duquesne than Akron. Akron may not have quite been in the depths that Duquesne was, but before his arrival the Zips had one  NCAA bid (a first round loss 18 years earlier) and was 0-2 in the NIT in the program’s history. They hadn’t had a winning season in the previous four years and hadn’t won 20 games for 15 years. He won 19 games in his first year and at least 20 every year after that. Akron is no more a fertile recruiting ground than western Pennsylvania. He still found a way to build his best teams around 6’10” Isiah Johnson and 7’0” Zeke Marshall. So what is different? Is it all his age? Is it the portal? Is the A-10 really that big a step up from the MAC? Is it the curse of Dudey Moore?

None of these guys was going to be a star this season but, it is hard to flourish & grow if there is no consistency in these matters. There is no way that these guys are confident about understanding their roles & responsibilities.

Yes I certainly agree. Coming into the season Acuff seemed like he was going to be not only a starter, but the on-court leader of the team. He started well, but lost more and more opportunities to Spears and Johnson as the year went on. Then he started slumping, which was my reason for concern. Again hopefully the VCU game can get him settled back in.

Okani also seemed like he would be a big player this year, but has never really gotten the opportunity to do so. He’s played well for the most part in a minor role. His length, athleticism, and hustle check off boxes that we are sorely lacking in. Still he went half a season without getting the kind of minutes he’s earned. VCU was just the third time all year he played 30 minutes and the first since Colorado 2 1/2 months ago. He’s 4th on the team in rebounds, 4th in steals, and 3rd in blocks but has only played the 7th most minutes.

What bothers me most about the quote is the “even during my days at Akron” part. While I would rather the coach not state it so clearly and publicly, we aren’t comparable to Dayton. It doesn’t mean we don’t even try to compete with them, but they are clearly a better program in basically every way. Saying we aren’t even as strong a program as Akron is embarrassing though.

They play in a 5,500 seat arena. They were in the Mid-Continent Conference as recently as 1992 and even now aren’t in a conference as good as the A-10. They have never been ranked in the history of the AP poll. If you take away Dambrot’s tenure, they’ve only ever made one NCAA tournament and two NITs and lost all three games. Since he left they’ve won 60% of their games compared to our 58%. That is the program he seemingly is saying Duquesne is below in the pecking order.

Like I said I haven’t seen Fordham this year, but their stats indicate a team very similar to what they’ve been for awhile now. Fordham’s strength of FG defense and our weakness of offensive shooting are a bit of a concern, but I still expect a Dukes win. I still look at Fordham as a Patriot league opponent. They’re tough in football(though maybe not so much anymore) but we should beat them every time in basketball.

I haven’t seen Fordham this year, but definitely expected the Dukes to be favorites. We’ve dominated the series recently, winning 14 of the last 17 and 8 of the last 9 at Rose Hill. As the announcers said in the last game in reference to us struggling at UMass, almost no one on the team has been around long enough to know. I was at the last one though and certainly wouldn’t have expected the Rams to be favored against us less than a year later.

So the Dukes are 1 1/2 point underdogs and are predicted to lose by 3, but have an 88% chance of winning? Something doesn’t add up there. If home court is worth the generic 3 points across the board like it generally is in football perhaps that plays a part. I’d think that would be factored into everything though. Anyone know what’s up?

I am expecting him to bounce back over the next few games.

I’m shocked his wingspan is that long. I would have guessed longer than his 6’7” height, but not that long. That explains how he’s able to help so well and pick up blocks though. I agree he’s a better player than Rotroff, but the team seems to do better when Rotroff is in. It’s a less extreme case of Bekelja last year. He isn’t a great player, and I can’t really explain why (except the difference in height that I mentioned earlier), but the team seems to play better when he’s on the floor. Or maybe it just seems that way to me. I’ll have to run some numbers.

And even harder with the portal. It used to be you at least had a pretty good idea what pieces you’d have 2-3 years down the road. Fill in the missing pieces with recruiting and you’re all set. Now you can’t even be confident in what you’ll have next season.

To respond to the earlier discussion, having another big would allow us to play Rotroff (or the other big) and Williams at the same time. As it is, we can’t risk them both being on the floor because then whether it be foul trouble or just fatigue when they both sit we’ve got no size at all (at least as long as Hima continues to not play).

Williams is probably better both defensively and offensively than Rotroff, but the team seems to do better with Rotroff at the 5 because you can’t teach size. Williams may be strong enough to play down low at this level, but he’s just not tall enough or long enough. I’m curious how Rotroff at the 5 and Williams at the 4 would work, but don’t think we’ll ever get the chance to find out. Of course if we did it Easley most likely slides to the 3 and then one of the guards has to sit. I don’t know if it would work (and we shouldn’t try to fix what isn’t broken right now), but it would be nice to at least have the opportunity to try it out.
