While on the subject of great Dukes endings, two or three others stick out.  Obviously, the Bernie O'keefe ending vs. Providence at the Civic Arena.  Then the improbable Andy Sissini prayer answered vs. St. Bonaventure at Olean.  And, finally the Derrick Colter running 30 plus footer at Palumbo vs. St. Bona again.  But, all of those shots were uncontested.  What makes Clark's case so different  was that the defender was draped all over him.  Clark had to go through  body twists and contortions just to get his shot off.  But, I digress!  It was a win for the ages.

Indeed, the Great Ghost in Alive!!!!  This is the second time the Great Ghost has interceded for a Dukes W--Tevin Brewer's runner in the lane and Jimmy Clark's prayer that was answered.  An ESPN top tenner if I ever saw one!

Quotes from UCSB coach on the Dukes.

People look at last year, but Duquesne is really good this year,” Pasternack said. “They’re 6-1 and only lost at Kentucky.”Dae Dae Grant, one of 10 first-year players for Duquesne, made 6-of-9 three-pointers while scoring 26 points. The junior transfer from Miami of Ohio also had three steals.“They have an NBA player, I think, at the guard position,” Pasternack said.

This is what I wrote as to my pre-season observations:
THE FRESHMAN CLASS--Kareem Rozier (#32) is a real deal.  Matus Hronsky (#14) can light it up from three territory and can handle the rock as a swing forward.  Halil Barre (#5) and David Dixon (#2) will get substantial playing time at the forward and center spots. (4 and 5)  Did not see enough of  Devin Carney to comment.

THE TRANSFERS--Dae Dae Grant (# 3) is almost a clone of Sincere Carry with a little more control element about his total game. He can drive, stop on a dime and shoot the pull up jumper from the elbows.  Good passer.  He will start in my opinion.  Tre Clark (#1)  is a legit guard for the Dukes.  Good passer and good three point threat.  Joe Reese (#20)  is a sleeper just like kid who is now playing in Poland, Bailey Steele.  Does a lot of little things well off the blocks.  Puts the ball in the hoop.  He is a strong candidate to start in my opinion.  If not a starter, first man off the bench.  Did not see enough of McGriff (#55) to comment.

THE INJURED--Talked with Tevin Brewer.  He is very optimistic about his current recovery.  Is seeing his Doc today and expects to get practice clearance to some level.  Did not see enough of Barba (#22) to comment.

[color=#000000]THE HOLDOVERS--RJ Gunn (#21)  is also a real deal.  I see why he scored as well as he did at Lenoir Ryhne.  Is strong as an ox.  He will start in my opinion.  Tre Williams (#4) looks great.  Lost about 25 lbs and  moves well.  Seems to have the same skill set that made him a starter.  He will start again in my opinion.  Kevin Easley (#35)  will definitely start in my opinion.  Austin Rotroff (#34) looks fluid. Seems to have knocked off the rust that plagued him with his history of injury.  Will help a lot in differing roles as a 4 or 5.  Don't know who a second guard would be because

The coaches name is Dambrot, not Dambroth!  At least you could give him the respect of spelling his name correctly if you are so hell-bent inclined to criticizing his coaching acumen.

Reece and Tre Clark did a defensive job on Colgate's best player, Tucker Richardson--kept him to under half his scoring average.  Colgate, in my opinion, is definitely a tournament team. They are deep much like the Dukes.  And as former women's coach Dan Durkin used to say, they have substantial "girth" with their bigs.

This game will rank as one of the finest exhibitions by a Dukes team that I have witnessed.   Seemed like neither team missed a shot in the first 7-8 minutes of the game.  It was great race horse basketball.  The Dukes won in the end for one major reason--they willed themselves to a win.  It was truly another team victory with important contributions from the point guards (20 points from the two point guards-24 from Dae Dae), the swing players (David Dixon) and the inside kids (Tre Williams brought his "A" game to Akron--as did Austin Rotroff).

As an aside to the game, what was RON EVERHART doing at the game?  WVU does not play SCSU as a scheduled game.  Was he scouting potential transfers?  His boss doesn't exactly have the reputation of caring to follow rules.

My comments were pretty much based on highlights of things I saw that kinda jumped out at me.  I did not see Carney or McGriff do anything outstanding that qualified either of them to be "in the mix".  I agree with CLK that Clark would most likely be the PG while Brewer is mending.  I did not get the impression from talking with Tevin Brewer that he is a long-term no go.  By the way, do not discount Kareem Rozier as a PG to get substantial minutes.  Coach D really likes him.

Had the pleasure of joining Bruce Atkins again for my annual sneak peek at the Dukes.. (Missed last year because of major surgery!)  Here are some random thoughts after watching a 2 hour practice that included a scrimmage among the players.

Wes Unseld became an all-pro at 6'7" And  career leading rebounder.  After Bill Russel, Boston had a 6'7'" center whose name escapes me.  I agree with Levon.  Let me tell you who thinks Tre is an adequate center at his height--Bruce Atkins!!

Hima isn't/wasn't worth all the NOISE being made by our posters.  His defense was at best atrocious.  Always at least two steps behind.  He couldn't even make dunks in warm-ups.  He had exactly one game where he made multiple shots.  Not exactly a striking resume.  Obviously he was signed originally on the theory you can't teach 6'10".  But the teacher needs good students in the rest of the equation.  Hima failed in that equation.  He should have stuck to  soccer!  This is my opinion and I am sticking to it.  Nonetheless, good luck to him with Jim Boeheim and  his staff.

I presume with Tejas Duke's and Wildwood's latest posts we will no longer have to put up with their incessant griping in Latin and English.  They both profess their seemingly undying "love" for their alma mater, yet they both exemplify the meaning of conditional as opposed to un-conditional "love" with their posts.  Good-by and good riddance gentlemen if your being "done" is your respective wish.

"Pistol Pete":  I checked the official website and Gunn and Brewer are listed as "Graduate Students".  Does that mean anything in terms of scholarships or is it just that already have a college degree?

It means they have one year of eligibility remaining.

Look at Hima's stats for 2021-2022 and tell me how much the Dukes will miss him!  1.9 ppg., 2.8 rpg.  I don't want to hear about upside!  Ray Milligan, Murray Mikenhaus and Rolf Mayer (7'4" kid from Germany) and others of that ilk had upside!    I want to see some positive results from our bigs.

From a good news story about Jay Wright to a scum of the earth story on college hoop coaches.  Remember when Will Wade, then at VCU,  mocked Duquesne because it didn't have any banners hanging from its rafters and belittled Duquesne because of that.  Well, Mr. Wade is probably done as a coach.  Anyone wonder why ALL OF THE LSU team entered the transfer portal this year?.  Easy answer is this.  Because there was no one left to pay the promised $$$$$$ to the recruits.  Over $300K is alleged by the NCAA and Federal criminal authorities as the amount Wade paid or handled arrangements for players to be paid.  Wade is lucky he and other coaches (Like Sean Miller) did not face RICO indictments along with the ADIDAS crooks who conspired with coaches to corrupt college hoops.  Yes, Virginia, there is justice.  Will Wade rightfully got his share of it.  Sorry for the digression.  I just had to get that thorn out of my side!!!!!

So we now have two 5'8" guards we are recruiting???  Good grief.

Look at it this way Pete.  When you add 6'6" with 5' 8" you get an average PG of 6'1"..Not so terrible is it?

Re: NCAA GAMESGreat coach! I think best in the A-10 and as good as anyone. He never gets out coached and didn't tonight. He's worth every penny he is being paid and then some!! Players extremely disciplined and play within themselves. Great season.

All of that is true.  But........................they lost!

Why so negative?  Upon inquiry, I was told in late May or early June that there would be a scheduling of time(s) for season ticket holders and new prospects to visit the new facility and choose their seats of the ones remaining.  The athletic office and season ticket personnel have done their jobs!  Cheez!  The first game is four months away and people are already  bitching.  .
