Good synopsis on the GW board for this one.  They gave credit to some defensive situations and to Sincere’s 3 point shot.  They also said how they will be so much better next year as they are young.  They are  correct.  A number of them tore up Hughes for being a big complainer,  and alluding to him also raising his hands when calls didn’t go his way, etc.  We have also seen this at home games, but since he is “one of ours” no one here says anything.  He needs to be careful of solidifying that reputation or he will never get a call and it will also hurt the team.  I’m sure after this stretch Coach D. Will figure out the “when do we rest them” and when do we practice them hard cycle.  Go Dukes

I think Mike Hughes has shown much more restraint this year. I really don't want him to lose his edge though.

Mike has made noticeable improvement over the last 7-8 games in both keeping his emotions in check & avoiding bad fouls. I suspect those things are related. He is balancing his fire & smarts much better than he did previously. He is definitely one of those guys that you love having as a teammate & hate having as an opponent.

While it would obviously be damaging to the program to have any of the 4 grad transfer candidates move on, at this point, I will also be a bit heartbroken to see one/some of them not finish the job they were brought here to do.

I am obviously a fan but I also really like this group of guys. (Even TDM, who makes me yell at the computer screen so much that my wife & children occasionally become alarmed..https://cdn.boardhost.com/emoticons2/cool.png

James talks. A lot. All game. I think the ref had some rabbit ears, and even came over once during the second half to say something (not directly to James, but to his end of the bench). Then, he comes in with 40 seconds left and is playing with 10 times the energy of everyone else on the court. That ref just wanted to get out of Dodge without any kind of altercation, and having James sit the last few seconds (without a T) was what he decided to do. It didn't look like KD was upset with James afterwards.

Ellis is agile and energetic. His size just presents a problem  on the court.  I would be not very surprised by next year, that he is in the roll that Bailey is playing now. You can't teach 7 foot.

I will be incredibly surprised if James Ellis is contributing more than mop-up minutes again next year.  First of all, he will be behind Hughes, Kelly and Rotroff.  You are assuming with this statement he beats our Kelly AND Rotroff for those minutes?  Not to mention, I would assume the role played by Steele where he is on the floor whenever Marcus takes a breather would be filled some by Harris.  Steele is a guy who can shoot.  Kelly and Ellis are not effective outside scorers further limiting their playing time to whenever Michael is not in the game.

He reminds me of Deji Ibitayo from Akron. Deji was a wing and like Elis, was incredibly gifted athleticly. Deji was 6.3 so he did not have the same upside as Ellis. KD played Deji in years 1-3 despite getting hammered by fans for playing him. As a senior...Deji was one of the teams best players. I don't think KD will give up on Ellis and I think he will be valuable rotation player as early as next year.

KD likes to have a shooter at PF.  That is why I did not see Steele and Hughes on the floor together much.  But Steele can shoot....so it is a different story. Hughes will not be PF to Ellis at C because neither are effective 3pt shooters. I do b

Anyone know or have a good guess of what went on at the end of the game with Ellis? The ref was giving him a good talking to and then he was sent out or pulled out of the game. Then Dambrot confronted him.

He is acting like a 7 foot mascot.

Since Ellis wasn't tossed out, there was no foul, and the official talked Dambrot into pulling him - best guess is that James said the wrong thing to somebody, and it had to be pretty bad.

I would think we'd need an "in" with a big-time program to get them to come to Pittsburgh under any circumstances, much less for the grand opening of the Coop. Doesn't KD have a close relationship with Shaka Smart at Texas? Any other coaches like that that come to mind, DSnyder? What about Harper, any ex-Dayton coaches that he knows? Indiana (Archie Miller) would be awesome, but I think we'd have to settle for USF (Brian Gregory).

KD has quirks. He does not like playing his proteges. While at Akron...he would not play VCU because Smart was coach. He is close with Huggins and WILL play him. Not sure about OU now now that Boals is coach. I would pay WV...great name and he is buddies with Huggjns.  Huggins is less afraid to play people on the road than other top coaches.  That would be my choice. If not ....try UC or UCon.  Both big names and winnable.

This!!!! I never understand why fans (I follow 2 MAC programs and Duq) don't understand why thier team does not bring in "good" teams. Duq is lucky because it has a natural P5 rivalry team (Pitt) that allows them a major home game every other year. Miami has that in football with UC. Duq should try to develop the regional rivalries with Marshall and WV. Penn State probably would be to big of a reach now...but worth trying if Duq gets national recognition as a top 20 program.

One thing Duq has going for it is that your coach is not using this job as a stepping stone.  KD was the best hire that Doq could possibly get. This will be his last job and he wil try to get Duq to be recognized as a top 20 program before he calls it a day.  The only downside to that is R

It looks good to me but I prefer a center scoreboard similar to the NBA.  I am sure that it will leave some disappointed but that is to be expected. With the PPG available for big games the goal should be to make the arena intimate and a difficult place for others to play.  Making it state of the art and best available should never be a consideration considering the cost of education today (unless you have a donor willing to fund the coast ala Gonzaga).  I never got the chance to see the old arena but I am excited to see the renovated one.

i really like the natural light in the drawings.  But I wonder how that will work with night games and what afect it will have on shooting.  It could be a big advantage for day games.

This will be an interesting sub-plot. KD uses mtm D to limit 3 pt shooting...giving up some easy 2s as a trade off. TDM will be needed to pressure shooters and to make some 3s. He will be a key to this game. This will not be an easy game.

I liked TDM coming off the bench, but I can't help but wonder if Steele should have been moved to the starting lineup instead of Norman. Moving Austin to the 2, Weathers to the 3, and inserting Steele at the 4 gives us a more typical lineup that I think could match up physically with anyone we're going to face and even overpower some. My only concern would be if Weathers is quick enough to handle wingmen defensively, but I think he is.

With TDM and Steele I think there's a very good chance we'll have the sixth man of the year again, and Weathers has to be getting some consideration for most improved player in the conference. He was putting up huge numbers in the radio only games and I was wondering how he was getting it done. Seeing him against St. Louis was a revelation. That is a hardnosed team and they couldn't contain him. Forget about since last season, even within this season he's improved drastically.

With Steele starting the perimeter shooting would be negatively affected and defense would be weakened too. Keep TDM and Steele coming off the bench. With a short bench both will get plenty of minutes and you can manage match-ups better.  IMO

I hope we have a much better overhead scoreboard than RMU has.

You probably will have to make do with Popeyes Chicken...Chic-fil-A is unlikely to change their policies to accommodate Duq.

That might also get eyes looking at the Dukes, from just average bball fans around town.    That is the game the Dukes have always lost, and let the fans go back to whatever they were doing.

Long way to go to get there, hopefully we get that chance!

Glad to see Weathers getting respect here now.  I am sure he believes he is more than a 6th man (after improvement).  I have always been a big believer in MW and think he represents exactly what KD wants in a player....hard worker, team first, cerebral, plays defense with passion and effort.

Traditionally the 2 and 3 are a threat to score.  Duq needs the 2/3 to be more of a threat if they want to be a top A10 team.

I really like and respect KD. I believe he is one of the good guys in sports. He will not sacrafice his principles  for a win. He looks out for his players...Brandon Wade still respects him.  I love watching the growth and development of teams and this team is very interesting. This team has talent but also has many holes. He has rotated 10-11 players in the past...the current short rotation is perplexing. I suspect Ellis and Kelly are about to join the fun.

I always worried about this game...a streaky team with a unique offense. If they are hot...they can beat anyone. And the Dukes defense has been less than stellar the last 2 games.

I expected an 11-1 OOC record. I was worried about a hiccup that would be difficult to overcome without the comfort of a home court. The last 2 games the team shot terrible...this has to be an abberation. If not...this will be a long season. Shooting this poorly affects all other aspects of the game....and I think the D was affected.  I really wanted this game...it was a true test for the defense.

Time to regroup.
2 things I hope change:
1. While a HUGE fan of TDM both as a player and person....I don't think he should start. I think he can be much more effective and disruptive coming off the bench.  I hope to see this change.
2. Carry tries to do to much at times. He dribbles to much and sometimes shoots to much. I hope his game matures.

I see KD's offense the same as the Sacremento Kings with Vlade Divac. Ball movement and working inside out.  The ball must move. Carry has to make sure that happens. KD falls in love with his pg.  Carry played 28 minutes....that says everything.  I think this will be a wake-up call and we see the Carry that is one of the best in the league next game.

One more thing.  This was a big game for the Duq coaching staff. They are still connected to Akron....have friends and former teammates they still stay in touch with. Akron handled Marshall easily in Huntington.  I am taking crap from my Akron friends now...I am sure it is the same for them. KD will get his team focused...that I am sure of.

One of the nice things about this board is that cyberbullying of players & vulgar rants are nipped in the bud. That seems wise & definitely makes the discourse more fun.

The players are 20-50 years younger than the most prolific posters here. They only know lives that have been shared,  lived, & examined digitally. Speculation on their intentions is not a shock to their systems. Because the posts here are kept polite by the moderators, I see little chance of "offending" a player out the door.

Hmmm... maybe it is that questioning or critisizing shot selection is discussing or debating something that ACTUALLY happened vs something that MIGHT happen. I personally think it is lame and irresponsible....not my cup of tea.

Agree with this. They're starters on what should be a very good team next year. I could see it if we looked as though we'd be an also ran, or if they were getting limited minutes. No guarantee to start, or even play if you transfer to the wrong spot. These guys are nice players, but it's not like winning P5 programs will be beating down the door for any of them to be a starter. Their best shot would be going to an also ran. Why do that? Tarin went to a mediocre UConn team, and made little impact. Who wants that?

It is OK to speculate but adding names is inappropriate IMO.  TDM in paticular loves KD and would follow him anywhere. I suspect you will see TDM on your staff in some capacity after his graduation. I think you are correct that players read this forum and probably don't appreciate the pre-crime speculation.

I hope not. I don't want to see anyone run off. assuming that Hughes will grad transfer, we're already going to need for someone to leave. We're already going to have 3 senior starters leaving after next year. Having a ton of seniors in the rotation will leave the younger players lacking experience, which will send us tumbling down the standings the next year. We had a need for a grad transfer this year due to the injuries in the frontcourt. I don't see the need next year. I want Andre Harris to get most of those minutes that Baylee is getting this year. If the young guys are always being blocked by grad transfers, how are we ever going to build a program? We lucked out with Baylee. Most grad transfers suck. No to any grad transfers at this point. Play the young recruits so we can keep this train rolling!!

I’d like to  put this conversation back on track.  I tend to look at Amari’s situation a bit differently than many of the responders who fully expect Amari to take a redshirt.  I’d still defer to Amari to make the call; but as mentioned above guys recover differently from knee surgery; so comparing Austin Rottrof to Amari doesn’t work for me.  If Amari has progressed very quickly; he could really help this team off the bench.  He can be a dynamic shot blocker, and has a nice touch around the hoop.  I see him not as a fifth option but as a 3rd option after Mike Hughes and Steele.  Given the tendency for bigs to collect fouls quickly; Amari could help us win a few conference games that we might otherwise lose.  Just a thought.

He had trouble staying on the court last year because if fouls. I prefer he RS so he starts the season with the team and goes through the OOC schedule.
