The next coach does not have to come from Division I. I remember Buzz Riddle came from NAIA Westminster and turned a sorry Pitt team around.

DePaul is not in a Power 5 Conference. They are in the Big East. But good win anyway.

Do the Pirates really stink? Read on ESPN that the owner is very high on the young players. That they are expected to blossom this season, make a run for the pennant. Last season the Bucs took 5 out of six from the Dodgers. That's something to build on. I agree with the owner and expect an exciting season in 2023.

Going to Duquesne, PA is a novel idea for one or two games. That is provided the Athletic Staff can coordinate with Duquesne City Hall to get the word out to the community. Maybe going back to La Roche can also be explored. Duquesne used to have doubleheaders at The Pitt Field House. Maybe doubleheaders at Pitt's facility could be explored.

Near beer was served to below age 21 Kids at a tavern called George the Third in Greensburg. As noted you could drink all night before you felt anything. That made for a lot of pit stops on the way home.

That tavern called The Wooden Keg was probably filled with Pennsylvania kids on Saturday nights. West Virginia had a drinking age of 18 when Pennsylvania 's was 21. A similar tavern called Lulu Belle's on US 119, just south of the Pennsylvania border near Point Marion also burned down. They had a pool table there and so much beer was spilled around it that your feet stuck to the floor.

The focus was on Eric Heiden, favored in every speed skating event. For ice hockey, some felt the USA could win a bronze medal. The games were acquired because Lake Placid was the only bidder. Denver had rejected the 1976 games, causing them to be reawarded to Innsbruck. After the Munich Massacre in 1972, nobody wanted the games. Peter Unberoff reawakened the Olympic spirit in 1984.

St. Bonaventure's goose is cooked. For the first time in a long time, Duquesne is in a better position than they are. It will be very hard for St. Bonaventure to get good players to ever come there again.

I visited Duquesne last week. It was the first time in a lot of years. The Cooper Field House is terrific, especially compared to the Pitt Field House. Campus looks so modern compared to the 60's. Slums cleaned up too. Great idea to have the bridge from upper campus to Rockwell Hall, where I worked. One thing I could not find was a large mural that was in an auditorium on the first floor of Rockwell. It must have been sometime. In fact, I couldn't even find the auditorium. Duquesne looks like a great school in a great location. All the Pittsburgh roads have finally been connected!

Word is RMU is reinstating Men's and Women's Division I hockey next season. I hope it is a very profitable venture for them. Along with Penn State and Mercyhurst, there would be three Division I hockey programs in Pennsylvania.

As I recall, the last time Duquesne hosted the regionals, Arizona came in and stole Mc Connell. Duquesne must be prepared so none of the host schools in this year's regionals steal any of our present players. Be alerrt!

I was at the game against Oscar Robertson. Duquesne never took the lead, but they kept within seven. The final was 61-58. It snowed like heck that night. Did not think I'd make the game. Couldn't get up the hill to the Pitt Field House (was it De Soto Drive?). Someone let me park in a lot halfway up. It's funny. Cincinnati never won the NCAA's with Oscar. He graduated and they went to the title game three straight years and won twice. Only Loyola of Chicago, who had beaten Duquesne in the NIT the year before, could beat Cincinnati. And that took overtime!

Not a pretty picture indeed. The addition of Loyola next year will help temporarily. Loyola's good coach has left for Oklahoma. Loyola will regress and join the rest of the A-10 and the bottom level.
