This is not good news. EVERYBODY agreed this kid could shoot. He was a local winner to boot. I saw plenty of playing time available for him this year with Brewer and Q being gone. It appears other A-10 schools as well as power 5 schools are showing interest so it's clear he was a fit for this level of competition. He must have either been shown the door or inferred he was not in the plans (which is really the same thing.) I will wait to see how things shake out before making a judgement but i'm not going to pretend this is a non event. Are you referring to ONE TWEET from something called “The portal report” when you cite Power 5 interest? The tweet said he has “heard” from 13 schools. One is Vanderbilt, one is UMASS, and the rest are significantly lesser programs. Who do you think gave this Twitter profile this information, it is the player dude. Ridiculous shooting? Explain that. I don’t know, Joe Reece making two 3’s in a 9 minute stretch in the first half accounting for literally 25% of our scoring at that point? Fordham still doesn't scare me in the slightest. The last time we beat Fordham was January 27th 2021. We have since lost to them 4 times in a row. If I didn’t already live in Oregon I would say I want what your smokin. We can say the game was more than the officials, but I will say this…basketball is a very momentum-based game. Momentum is extremely fragile. We were all over Fordham early in the game. When it was basketball. Playing very well. They were out of sorts. They found some footing and then their footing was reinforced with a 7 point possession from the officiating. The tides turned dramatically. We beat them in the tourney, mark it. Were you complaining about the refs, fragility, and momentum when they rang up Quisenberry, their best player, with 4 fouls with 11 and a half minutes left in the second half????? City Duke please. Really.? Enough. Coach Dambrot & staff has done a great job this year. Urgo like Schmidt are superior game coaches. Good news Urgo power 5 team within 1-2 years. My problem today is how can CoachDambrot takes T Al McQuire special in order to protect his team. Cowardice in my opinion. If he takes a T next round A10 playoffs much too late. He blew it. Protect your team. Walk the plank. Pathetic.Final note missing persons McGriff crime dog. Coach this was the opportunity to protect the Dukes. You blew it. Iron Duke for once we are completely aligned. This team is confounding. I think they are good not great, but extremely dangerous when multiple guys are hot shooting, and we have about 5 guys who can get hot. The depth has helped win games at times as well, and the offensive ball movement has been much improved this year and lead to much more balanced scoring, making the team much harder to guard on any given night. The defense has also improved, especially down the stretch. Happy to be wrong about some of these guys, unbelievable performance tonight by the Dukes in their first home win against Saint Bonnie’s since 2016(!!). Uber eats guy blowing up all over the internet. Ellis Cannon & Tim Benz getting major 👍 for their live on air comments. For all you Cannon & Benz haters I rest my case. Classic moment in Duquesne basketball history. How ironic the same date of Jerome Lanes monster dunk. Great job Dukes & coaching staff adjustments second half. The joke writes itself. I think we are at a point where we need to hit lightning in a bottle and it all to happen in a year for the program to be revitalized. Now with the free agency nature of college hoops it actually seems more possible. Duques102, I agree that Duquesne is a built on MAC-type players. That won't cut it in the A-10. I agree that it's no accident that Clark is Duquesne's best player and he was a VCU recruit. As in all sports, talent wins in basketball. If you don't have the talent, you will lose no matter who your coach is and what your scheme is. Would you really? I think this team beats that one by 20. Haha I know we have certainly had our disagreements, but this is a stretch….on many fronts. I do not even know where to begin, so I won’t. Lol this one made me laugh as well. I watch way too much sports, and can honestly say I think Ellis is easily the worst “analyst” I have ever listened to. I think Benz actually does a good job. Extremely not shocked ol “iron” has this take. Duques102, I agree that Duquesne is a built on MAC-type players. That won't cut it in the A-10. Ellis is a gem. He has an IQ over 60. Are you blaming Coach Dambrots failures on Benz & Cannon.Dukes up 6 on a roll & he subs out Rozier. Game over. Brewer is a Div 2 player. This team has the talent to win the A10. Dambrot has the time to turn this around. Let’s face it Gormley & AD Dave have given him the keys to the Ford Bronco. No excuse. Criticism of the announcers is in my humble opinion pathetic. At this point it is up to Dambrot. Go Dukes. Haha I know we have certainly had our disagreements, but this is a stretch….on many fronts. Extremely not shocked ol “iron” has this take. McGriff is killing us. Playing such selfish basketball and has taken about 4 terrible shots in this game. The book is out on us on offense, we like to shoot and can shoot 3’s in volume. That’s fine, if your also working it inside out and getting scoring and penetration around the basket. If not you get this. Officiating wasn’t great but we choked. End of. It’s not the refs fault we had almost a 5 minute stretch without scoring in the 2nd half. Dae Dae was supposed to be our Trey Burton. Chickens coming home to roost. Ellis "Loose" Cannon needs to be muzzled. I have been refraining from posting to this point as I wanted to see what this team really is. The OOC isn’t a great indication because for the most part (and like other years) it was basically a cake schedule and almost all home games. Our best win to me is UCSB who is 10-2 now. Colgate was supposed to be a big win, they are 6-7 now, and we beat DePaul without multiple of their regular contributors playing. We should have lost to ball state save for a miracle shot. Don’t see Easley on the bench…. Well, this looks like a basketball team. It's funny how people took shots at Spears for being a "ball hog" and hunting for his shots at times; but failed to see his incredible ability to elevate over defenders, bury his mid-range shots, get to the basket with ease, and also handle pressure and get the ball into the frontcourt. He was the only player on the team who could break pressure and get the team into its offense. Literally, when Spears had to rest they were fortunate to even get the ball across half-court and even more fortunate to I think you'll see what level of interest there is in each player's services for next season. Primo down to 3: Oklahoma, TCU, and Maryland. Power 5, power 5, power 5. I feel like a broken record. I knew that Hima was a favorite of many on this Board, so I wasn't surprised the weeping and gnashing of teeth when Hima was announced as a portal entry; but frankly I don't understand it from a basketball perspective. Hima blocked a few shots; but mainly looked confused and seemed to have to pause and think before reacting. I'm sure he had a significant lack of basketball experience to overcome; but I just didn't see him becoming a vital part of a winning team. He was the only player on the team who could break pressure and get the team into its offense. Literally, when Spears had to rest they were fortunate to even get the ball across half-court and even more fortunate to get a decent shot. Yet, he was chastised on this Board for shooting too much and not sharing the ball; while Hima was embraced for blocking a few shots to wake up the crowd. Well now that both are gone, I think you'll see what level of interest there is in each player's services for next season. Great points and agree 100%. People may be confusing height with ability and potential. Darius Lewis and Mamadou Datt were project bigs. One stayed four years to improve to an average player and one dropped down to D2 after a short period. To me, Hima is more raw than both. Definitely way behind the curve in terms of knowledge and skill because of his background. A common point made across many sports is that the best coaches don’t try to fit the players they have into a specific system, they assess the talent they have and play to the teams strengths. El Presidente', in regard to changing coaches after this season; I can certainly understand that we all feel the frustration. The Portal has caused extreme upheaval in the game, and coaches have had to take a crash course in how to function in this new environment. Some of the most successful coaches just "threw in the towel" and aren't interested in building a roster annually. What assurances do we have that the guy they would hire to replace KD would be any better at managing the new portal environment? The Duquesne staff took their lumps last year; let's see if they learned some lessons and can apply what they have learned to annually constructing a new roster. It's really like a glorified AAU team being built each year. I’ll always preach patience and agree with some of this but the sample size is no longer small. KD has lost his best or group of best players most years due to public fall out. These guys have gone on to bigger or similar programs and had success in most cases (we don’t need to run through the track record again). This is not acceptable, and we can never expect to have continuity and positive momentum, much less success, with this now having been the theme of his entire tenure. All I have to say, is Duques 102, I have no idea what you are reading into, but you are missing a lot and coming up with crazy conclusions. I would break it down but really isn’t worth my time. By the way your solutions were very helpful.

The kid couldn’t even make the playing roster this year on this team and you are suggesting there is any likelihood that he will go to UMASS and be the A10 player of the year?!
Maceo Austin was apparently receiving “interest” from Virginia out of high school and was a true 3 star recruit, a much higher profile recruit than this kid. He came here and didn’t cut it, and is now going to be playing at Slippery Rock.
The western PA area has been lite on talent for awhile now, and here is another kid who was overhyped. He was going to be going to ELON, another lesser program. There is no conclusion to make from this other than he wasn’t good enough.
Do you think they red shirted him, even though he had some great potential and could have contributed this year? If he was good enough, he would have been playing.
If 5’9” Kareem Rozier can play as much as he did as a freshman, then there is no argument that this was some mistake. He’s not good enouMen's Basketball » Game Thread - Fordham University Rams (A) » 3/04/2023 10:30 pm

City Duke, optimism is a good thing, but you sound delusional. The Dukes got their ass beat by 27 points tonight. Fordham took their starters out with like 4 minutes left.
We led early off ridiculous shooting, that is not sustainable. Defense was absolutely atrocious in this game and when the shots stopped falling, that was exposed even more.
I am so sick of hearing about the refs. Did they miss a couple calls or make some calls I didn’t agree with? Yes, both ways in my opinion.
Was it the ref’s atrocious defense that led to a soft foul and easy layup for an and one immediately following Gunn completely losing his head in a huge moment?
RJ Gunn is probably damn near 28 years old at this point, to lose your composure like that regardless of the other players involvement is both selfish and naive in a huge game (senior night) on the road. I felt like we were completely screwed as soon as it happened. Maybe it should have been a double tech, but I’m not shocked the call favored them a little at home. That being said I could easily see that being deemed a flagrant and it wasn’t.
We blew a lead after getting out early, that is essentially the theme of the season. This team doesn’t play smart, winning basketball. There’s a difference between having talent and playing winning basketball and just having some talent, and we are the latter. That’s down to coaching aMen's Basketball » A10 (Almost) Regular Season Post Mortem-What can this team be? » 3/03/2023 1:08 pm
Issues from past years we have seen still pop up far more often than I would like to see. Too many bad shots and decisions at times leading to many blown leads in the 2nd halves, some we recovered from and some we did not. Too aggressive at times defensively leaving us exposed, and we have trouble matching up against the top teams from a positional size perspective. 5’9” guards and 6’6” and 6’7” post guys will leave you at a disadvantage from the jump against some of the better teams offensively and defensively. Not to mention a seeming lack of coaching adjustments/strategies at obvious/crucial periods of games.
Too often I find myself thinking I wish we just played smarter basketball, and if we did would likely have 2-3 more conference wins this year. This speaks to both player and coach letdowns throughout the season at times.
All that being said, I think this team’s range of outcomes for the rest of the season include an A10 tourney one-and-done performance, all the way to winning the thing and going to the Big Dance (one can dream).
I am a data nerd, and I plotted out the A10 season and schedule for the Dukes prior to our last game to get a better sense of who this team really is. You can obviously go deeper with stats at the individual player level but I wanted to keep this at the team level to get people’s general senses about the teams performance to date, and likely range of outcomes for what has really been a wild year.
The best way to do that from my perspective is to look at data and facts. Wanted to only lookMen's Basketball » Game Thread - St. Bonaventure University Bonnies (H) » 2/11/2023 10:11 pm
They keep gelling and improving, beat a well coached defensive team with defense.
Love Roziers leadership, I can’t remember having a hype man like him in recent memory. Everyone chipped in tonight and that is how this team can be successful going forward.
Very encouraged, if we beat SLU I will be ready to call this team a real A10 contender!Men's Basketball » Game Thread - Loyola University Chicago Ramblers » 1/27/2023 10:36 pm

One year where enough guys stay over and we nail down a recruiting class way above what we are getting. If we have a turnaround year like that, and I’m talking tourney bid year, I think by the end of that season fans are bought in, less guys leave, we get better guys the next year, etc. to carry the momentum forward. I don’t think anything less that that will change where we are. The coop is a huge asset and hopefully that and NIL could be leveraged in a way to accelerate the programs progression via recruiting.
If that ever happened, what a rush it would be. Dukes would be the darling of Pittsburgh sports, packed coop, and all the media coverage we covet. One can dream!Men's Basketball » Game Thread - Fordham University Rams (H) » 1/22/2023 1:41 pm

I would 100000% take that lineup over this one. They were all in the building and would all be on the floor together had they stayed.
I think it depends on coaching for both teams. More so making a pure talent comparison. No biases towards how they played for us etc. I think there is more talent there (and eligibility).Men's Basketball » Game Thread - Fordham University Rams (H) » 1/22/2023 1:17 pm

This team is mediocre. I posted a long write up after the disappointing Dayton outing and unfortunately a lot of what we saw is holding true with conference play starting.
We have depth in numbers, not depth in talent. The guy who was supposed to be our best offensive player and scorer to carry this team in the league has been inconsistent at best.
Your number one option since VCU has given you 13, 3 (Richmond), 17 (St. Joes), 4 (Bonnies), and 10 (Fordham). See the theme? Excluding the VCU game, he plays better against bad teams, and when he plays real teams he gets completely shut down. Mentioned this as a concern in the long write up in the Dayton thread. Even his 10 against Fordham was an empty calories 3-12 performance from the field aided by some free throws.
The recruiting philosophy ***for the most part****has been bring in transfers who were good to very good at the MAC level, and think your going to coach them into top line A10 players? This is a different level my friend, the top of this conference has power 5 level talent. This coach called Tre Williams something hyperbolic like “the best center he’s ever worked with”. Again, from what is an inferior conference, an above average player who is 6’6”. What has that turned into? A bang average A10 power forward for the most part…….
Same with the freshman. Mostly kids from Michigan and Ohio. Hard nosed, under sized, under talented. We are commonly battling MAC schools when you look at who else is Men's Basketball » Game Thread - Fordham University Rams (H) » 1/22/2023 1:01 pm

Dayton went into this game with two less wins than us, with preseason matchups against teams like SMU, UNLV, Wisconsin, NC State, BYU, and Virginia Tech, and a lot of those were road/neutral games. They compete with these level of schools for recruits, and win some of those recruiting battles. Their center is probably a jump shot away from being a contributing NBA power forward, and probably the other 2-7 guys would all start and be a top 3 guy on our roster.
This is and has been the reality for awhile. I was hoping Grant could lead this team and it could use its depth to backfill, but this looked like every other Dayton or previously City game over the past 14 years or so I have been a fan where we are going in optimistic. Say what you want about the start, it just underscored for me that the the team wasn’t ready for that environment because they have only played at home in front of 1,000 fans all season. The atmosphere and talent gap punched them in the mouth. Credit to them for fighting throughout, but this was never really a game save for the run the dukes had to cut it to 5 at the end of the half. You know your not as good as the other team where your down basically double digits the entire game and their color person (who was good) is crediting us on our “fight” and lack of “give up” down 10. Basically saying we were doing a great job of keeping it at 8-11 when it could have easily been 15-20…..yeah.
We were overwhelmed all over the court, and Dayton didn’t have their two best pMen's Basketball » Game Thread - University of North Florida Ospreys » 11/21/2022 8:34 pm
