I just noticed that Dayton's Mustapha Amzil entered the portal. Why would someone who gets a lot of minutes playing on one of the conference's perennial powers before 10,000 home fans and was considered a rising star would want to leave that situation? Hard to figure... Good God, this board should apply for a group discount for Prozac. Stay in the A10. I would never advocate stepping down to a lower conference. The A10 had a down year, but it will be back. Our presence in this league provides a recognition that we wouldn't have in a lesser conference. Irrespective of where we finish in basketball, the question for me is where the university is in 10 years. Enrollments are nationally down 8% across the country. There is a trend where students are opting for alternatives to college degrees for careers. Tuitions are out of control. Stepping back will only make things more difficult for the university in the long term. For those of you questioning why Dayton, Saint Louis or Fordham didn't get in the NIT, take a look at the official NCAA Net Rankings. The performance of the A10 during the OOC combined with the weight the NET places on quad wins doomed the A10 this year. During a season in a league with a lot of balance, where any team can win on a given night, how can any of these teams accumulate a decent quad resume playing against each other and all members had early season OOC meltdowns? I think the teams in the top half of the A10 continued to improve as the season went on. They would have fared much better in the OOC had they been playing at that their late season level earlier. A quote from the Post Gazette following yesterday's loss - Marcus and Hughes were far more consistent than our starting big men this year. That needs to be a point of emphasis in our recruiting. Dixon is really good. But why is he always sitting on the bench when Reece and Gunn are having a bad game? Hopefully, Dixon returns and Barre gets cleared to play next year. But, we still need to get additional 4s and 5s that can impact the flow of the game. That, and quit playing slow. We aren't good when we walk the ball up the court, stand around fairly motionless, pass the ball around the perimeter only to put up a 3, which, statistically, only has a 1 in 3ish chance of going in. Live by the 3 and die by the 3. Late in these games, the team play breaks down and individuals start driving to the hoop, desperately trying to win the game by themselves. No one else moves to the basket to create opportunities for a pass and easy basket. Again, get some mobile big men with good hands, and don't waste them taking shots 30 feet from the hoop. It helps the Dukes with the bye. But, it is still a high hill to climb. The Billikens have three games left - Loyola and Dayton at home and VCU away. They have to lose at least 2 of those games and the Dukes have to win out our remaining 4. Otherwise, we could end in a tie at 12-6, and the Billikens have the tiebreaker. C'mon man. The Dukes coughed up a 22 point lead including a 15 point halftime advantage. I agree, the officiating sucked but, it didn't suck enough to kill a lead that large. Truth. There is no way RE would have lost that game Yeah, you are right. The closest RE ever got to that was when he blew a 16 point lead to arch-rival Pitt during the City Game in 2009... We had them all the way! Well, not quite. Great game by the Dukes. Plus, Bonnies lost tonight to LaSalle. Next game should be really important. Two road wins against St. Joes and GW pretty much make it apparent that this team, likely, moves faster than anyone else in the A-10 Postgame comment from Chris Caputo after GW's loss to Duquesne - “I could see on film that this was going to be a problem,” said GW Head Coach Chris Caputo. “When you see the quickness of guys like [Tre] Clark, Grant, [Kareem] Rozier, it’s very hard for us with that level of quickness in the backcourt with the makeup of our team.” Below is a link to another video featuring Michael Cooper interviewing Norm Nixon on a podcast from a few years ago. There is an interesting reaction at the 20:25 mark when Cooper asks Nixon a question about Sincere Carry. There are threads on almost every A10 team's message board calling for the coach to be replaced after a disappointing loss. This year, I've seen similar comments posted about Rhodes, Schmidt, Mooney, and even Grant. Do I wish we had more success? Yes. But, at least the present coach didn't state he needed 10 years to turn this around. I'm disappointed, but not disheartened. The A10 is a tough league. I expect Dambrot will finish his contract and possibly retire after next season. Whatever happens, we are in a measurably better place than we were 6 years ago when few coaches were interested in taking this job. Duquesne is now respected and no longer considered a graveyard for coaching. Jimmy Clark is a warrior. Duques102, I agree that Duquesne is a built on MAC-type players. That won't cut it in the A-10. I agree that it's no accident that Clark is Duquesne's best player and he was a VCU recruit. As in all sports, talent wins in basketball. If you don't have the talent, you will lose no matter who your coach is and what your scheme is. Of the players cited, only Primo has put up any statistics that are worthwhile, and his team is 5-15. He is a below average 3 point shooter, decent at free throws, and good within the arc or driving to the hoop. I never thought he was a good ball distributor; he seemed more focused on his personal game. There are many comments about the talent level on this team, and that it shouldn't lose to teams with 'inferior talent'. Well, I think there are probably 10 or more teams in the A10 with similar talent to us. So, I'm not surprised what happened today. Our history has been it is always a rock fight with Fordham. I noticed at the pregame, the Dukes were largely seated on their bench and the entire Fordham team was gathered together on the floor with their coaches. They simply wanted it more and that was a bad sign. But, good teams don't lose often, and rarely at home. This team needs to quit reading their press clippings and prove their worth. I agree with all of this. Play the bench, speed up the game, and press on defense the full length of the court. I just watched VCU win at Richmond by 12 points doing just that. Talent-wise, VCU seems very similar to us and made it look easy beating a taller, 1/2 court oriented team by 12 points. This team wasn't prepped to play after a week off. No intensity at the start. Reece and Grant were liabilities. No meaningful adjustments early when Bona was running up the score. Again, we can't defend the three. And, Reece is more a finesse player. Every time he comes up against a bigger player and he tries to force it in, he gets blocked or turns it over. It might have been wiser to start Barre and get Dixon in the game early. Duquesne was something like 23% from beyond the arc and 44% overall. If you take away Barre's and Rotroff's points (which I think were mostly putbacks or slams) then the overall % would drop to around 30% - not good enough to beat most A10 teams, and certainly not Dayton. Just an overall bad shooting night. A great win - North Florida played their best game of the season and we still prevailed. In past years, we would not have won that game, and probably would have lost by 15. I do hope Easley rejoins the team, because I believe somewhere down the road we are going to need him. Still, there is a lot of talent on this team - we haven't had a pass first point guard play like this since the days of TJ playing on the Bluff. And, Tre Clark is the best on ball defender since... I can't remember. https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/05/26/college-sports-pay-for-play/ Don't call it college sports... For those who missed it, here is a link to the OPED from Mitch Daniels (former governor of Indiana and president of Purdue) that has attracted a lot of discussion. Besides doing well in Europe, Lewis is a also Duquesne grad. He finished his degree in 2021 with a double major in psychology and communications. Good for him! Before we declare the Dukes the A10 champs, let's remember their success will be predicated on how well they play together - something sorely lacking last year. With the incoming backcourt, the guard play should definitely improve. However, no one player is going to turn this thing around. Remember that Grant was honorable mention at guard last season. But, Sincere Carry was 1st team and league MVP while Lamar Norman was a third team selection. Thoughts from afar… The paper from Lorain (Grant's home) quotes Grant as saying he was transferring due to a coaching change at Miami. It appears that Duquesne lost 68% of its scoring to the transfer portal. The only other A10 team with a worse % was LaSalle at 87% (understandable with a new coach). The top teams in the league - Davidson, Dayton, Bonaventure and Richmond are at 25% or fewer. I can't see how you are going to throw all these new players together and generate the team chemistry you see with mature rosters. I'd love to be wrong. But, I think we are going to have another poor year. Maybe we win 7 games?

The last 3 at large teams invited to the NIT were Santa Clara #84, Seton Hall #77 and Villanova #75. The only A10 team that might have had a shot at the NIT was Dayton at #78. Not sure if they were going to get the final bid or not; their weird statement muddied the waters.
Here are the NET Rankings for the A10 teams as of today:
VCU #53
Dayton #78
Saint Louis #99
Duquesne #130
Fordham #134
George Mason #139
Davidson #145
Richmond #159
Saint Bonaventure #199
Saint Joseph's #200
UMass #205
GW #211
La Salle #223
URI #265
Loyola Chicago #269
I think part of the issue is the new NET Rankings. Looking at the old RPI, all A 10 teams are ranked considerably higher. For example, VCU is #19 and Duquesne is #115 and had be much higher.
It would be nice if the NET could somehow factor in improvement during the course of a season. But, the best guarantee is to schedule teams below 100 and win those early season matchups.

“I mean, we've got a shot to be good next year,” Dambrot said. “We showed we can rally back and that we’re probably one player away from really being a high-level team. A lot of people can say that, but I think I know our weaknesses better than most. I think we have some inconsistency because we rely a lot on the perimeter, and if we could score a little bit better on the inside, I think we would make another big jump. We have some young kids that eventually, I think, can do that. So we just have to keep developing it.”Men's Basketball » Game Thread - La Salle University Explorers (A10 Tournament) » 3/08/2023 10:31 pm

But, I do have an observation. When we slow down the game, we stink. So, in the last few minutes of the game, we slowed down and tried to run out the clock. It almost cost us the game. Early in this game, when Dixon was in for a few minutes, he was fantastic - blocking shots on breakaways, disrupting their point guards which allowed Tevin Brewer to make a steal, etc. So, if we are going to slow down in the last three minutes, why not insert him into the lineup for defense?
Anyway, great win. Go Dukes.Men's Basketball » Game Thread - George Mason University Patriots » 2/08/2023 9:08 pm

I would 100000% take that lineup over this one. They were all in the building and would all be on the floor together had they stayed.
Johnson comes off the bench and averages 11.9 minutes and 6.1 points per game.
Hima comes of the bench as well, and averages 8.6 minutes and 1.3 points per game. He does have 25 blocks, however - 2nd best on his team. (We always agreed he was a rim protector.)
Chad Baker is playing JC ball in Florida, having failed at academics at SDSU. I suspect that was also an issue during his time at DU.
So, I would take our current team over that roster. My only complaint is that I don't think this 1/2 court slow down game fits our current profile. Press on defense and let them get out and run. That probably will not happen though. I recall that when Dambrot joined DU his early comments were that he liked man to man defense and the 1/2 court game.Men's Basketball » Game Thread - Fordham University Rams (H) » 1/21/2023 8:55 pm

I posted the link above in another thread under recruiting. But, I think it is appropriate here as well. If Purdue, a highly regarded school in the Big10, and frequently a top 25 basketball program has these views, then what chance do the rest of us have to develop competitive programs?
My understanding is the NCAA does not control the revenue stream from the football national championship, but does so with basketball. I think they are implementing these changes in an attempt to stave off the formation of super leagues that would threaten their revenue stream. In doing so, they are destroying college athletics.
