9- 4 OOC 9-3 OOC 17 wins. would think ceiling is 3 wins, floor is 2. the trib has stepped up on the mens side. these kids attitudes and belief are a direct extension of their ultra competitive coach. Cheers and heres to hoping you take the final shot and finish off the bottle on March 11 Tough loss. But for all the media folks griping about MBB playing a soft schedule, where is the local coverage for this? wtae showed highlights of the womens game. only said score and win streak of mens game.. Notice the absence of certain posters during this streak? like most good message boards, they will be out in full force the moment the dukes lose with an I told you so.... i don't see people being unrealistic or overly optimistic about this years team. the competition has been weak, no doubt. but there is so much going on that goes way beyond the box score, and I believe its the coaching. ditto to pretty much everything as it pertains to Coach D, the dukes, and Lamar(very disciplined, well coached, and intense D), plus the overall horrible officiating. Getting better, fastest start at 7-3 since John Cinacola in 1974 I think. We've had better starts than this since Cinicola. 7-0 in 1979-80 comes to mind, which became 9-1, and then 12-3. 11-3 in Ron's second year as well. i think its supposed to be Coach D is off the best start for first year coach at 7-3 since Cincola... the addition of a healthy chas brown has been huge for the dukes on so many levels. Not only does he bring a physical post presence(though Id be happy if he never dribbled a basketball again), he allows for better match ups and rotation. last night was my first live look at the new dukes. tough loss. team looked gassed going into locker room at halftime. I think this is how season will play out. bad losses sprinkled with some unexpected wins. i noticed a big difference between this year and the past couple of years. more fundamentals. more defense. bad rebounding, turnovers, front rimming shots are usually a sign of fatigue. Fortunate enough to have attended private function with Mr. Harper, Coach D and the rest of his staff. I wouldn't be concerned that anything "shady" is going on. I expect we will see: fundamental, disciplined basketball on both ends. A well coached team. Haven't been this excited about DU basketball since the A10 championship gave vs Temple. Really enjoyed watching. gave up my season tickets a two seasons ago. Got back on board today. same seat. another nice article in trib from k gorman I'm pretty excited about all of this. only thing left to do is see if I can talk the ol ball an chain in letting me get my season tickets again... in contrast, check out the nice piece in the trib I think its just a matter of perspective Just what you would expect from an A-hole Pittsburgh media person like Zeise. Never mind he that he has only been a head coach for 4 years and turned that program around in two years winning 21 games his last two years.

would love to pick up a win in a10 tourney and a win in cbi
18-19 wins in season 1 would be huge.
i probably let my expectations get the best of me this year too. but its been a hell of a ride.
i think its sometimes easy to forget what the staff inherited and how far they came in one season.
I don't think we will get a real idea of his x's and o's, strategy, etc until next year when he has a full compliment of "his" players.
that is not to knock the ferry holdovers. Jrob and Tarin have shown so much improvement in one year under KD and staff. Credit to RCC and EJ for sticking it out and representing DUQ thru the tough times.
Credit to KD and staff for not giving up on these kids, not throwing them or previous staff under the bus, but for also really helping them improve their games.
Will be interested to see how it turns out next year with true PG. I love watching TDM in pre game. kid is lightning quick and can stroke it.
but for now, lets hope they can pull out a few wins here down the stretch, maybe get KD to another 20win season

WTAE has done some nice features on both teams lately.
I thought this was a pretty cool read by Jay Bilas. It was his best 68 teams. posted the other day.
Jay knows whats up on the bluff. i know its about St. B and J. Adams, but just the fact JB is mentioning the dukes in a good way, is pretty cool. shows how far this team has come
67. St. Bonaventure Bonnies
The Bonnies have won four straight. Wins over Syracuse, Maryland and Vermont help their NCAA tournament case. Still, St. Bonaventure will likely have to win the Atlantic 10 tournament to get into the field. Since his injury, Jaylen Adams is averaging more than 18 points on 47 percent shooting from deep. Adams put 40 on an improved Duquesne team on Saturday.
fwiw, i think a switch to zone in that game would have causes adams to go off for 50...if you aren't used to practicing zone, the movements and rotations and collapsing can cause significant problems. Schmidt wouldve had tarquoe and mobley, drive and kick out to adams for even more wide open attempts as the dukes guards wouldve collapsed inside..

Im thinking Coach D want to keep the 20win season streak alive and the players have bought in
they have faith, a winning attitude, they are playing tough defense and they are determined.

I think people are very optimistic about the future of the program under coach D.
Coach D is laying the foundation for a winning program..he isn't going brick by brick..I think he poured the whole concrete slab this year...
Men's Basketball » It can't be the coaches? » 12/21/2017 5:44 pm
Coach D is super competitive, in every thing he does. His assistants are clones of him.
This teams seems, compared to teams in the past:
1. they are better prepared
2. mentally tough
3. playing with passion and joy--its like tarin, rene, and JR rediscovered their love of the game.
4. the hustle--diving for loose balls
5. better defensive mentally and discipline--ball/you/man, switching, talking
6. Their is a offensive philosophy.
7. all of the coaches are constantly coaching, working with the players , talking to players, pulling players aside.(I've said it before, will say it again--this is the best collection of assistant coaches we have had in forever..)
8. the team has taken on an identity and its their coaches identity
so while the competition has been weak and things are going to get tougher, the foundation has been laid for future success!
**i gave up my season tickets during the JF error, I signed up for them the day after KD was hired.. heck, I wanted to check on eligibility. I was so fired up, i was ready to play...**Men's Basketball » Game Thread - Lamar Cardinals » 12/20/2017 5:00 pm
they play that sticks out to me and I think sums up Coach Ds philosophy, teaching, and competitiveness was Mike Lewis playing tough, scrappy defense, creating a loose ball, diving on the floor and getting the held ball possession. Even if the dukes would have gone on to lose that moment really sticks out to me and i think sums up the new era of duq bball...when we make the NCAAs, I will always look to that play as setting the tone for years to come..Men's Basketball » Game Thread - North Carolina A&T Aggies » 12/17/2017 3:42 pm

Jordan seems be doing better in off the bench role as serviceable big man. he's played much better since Chas returned.
Eric and TV have been able to play more natural positions, which I think helps them defensively. You don't have true PFs or Cs posting up on them, which has allowed them to be fresher.
Its allowed a nice 3 guard rotation of rene, tarin, and Mike. I said to myself yesterday, Tarin finally looks like a kid that was a B12 recruit and Rene looks looks like the player Brad Stevens wanted. They have both really bought into KDs philosophy and are playing better D.
Kellon brings a football attitude to the court(would love to see how he would improve if he played hoops year round)
Loved seeing eric have a nice game. he's def been thru a lot and gutted it out.
not only kudos to coach d, but also to his assistants. What a hard working, talented staff. Wouldn't be surprised if we lost 1 or 2 along the way to HC gigs....
have a nice 4 game litmus test coming up starting 12.22

trust the process.
(bobby mo has some very talented players, and a great coach)
I noticed Dylan Swingle was in attendance. Stood beside him. Thought I was next to a pro wrestler. He is a very big "man."Men's Basketball » Expectations this season » 10/11/2017 4:28 am
Everything that has been said about our AD and Coach are true. they know what it takes to win in the a10; they are putting the pieces in place; they are ultra competitive.
the one thing that stood out to me, that no one has really mentioned is the experience and level of assistant coaches we have now.
I honestly can't ever remember having this level of assistant coaches.
these guys are all top notch. they played d1 ball(including football), and one even played in the nba.
Coach D is surrounded by an amazing, hard working staff, that has the same mindset as him..

A lot of times, kids commit to schools with knowledge they will be preferred walk on year one, then placed on scholarship next year when a schollie opens up. example- a school only has 1 left and is in desperate need of a PF but also really likes a PG. knowing they have 3 guards graduating in 2018, they tell the young PG, we really want you, come as walk-on year one, we will redshirt you and then put you on a scholarship next year. PG who loves the school and has means to pay for year one, takes coach up on that offer.
at UNC, Luke Maye was recruited as a preferred walk on. when a scholarship opened up, he received it. the same thing for Shea Rush this year. UNC is going to have a numbers issue next year as they have 2 seniors and poss cam johnson leaving(as a duq and unc fan, do you know how happy that made me to see unc get him from pitt?),. they currently have 3 commits and are hosting several others. most likely Luke and Shea will give up scholarships, since they are renewed on yearly basis...
in other words, I'm sure coach d, etc have a plan and we have nothing to worry aboutMen's Basketball » What to Expect/What you want to see in 2017-18 » 7/30/2017 8:48 am
on offense-fluid ball movement, moving without the ball, big men using their bodies to create space. screens. the old "be hard to guard" mantra, triple threat positions
no standing around while one guy dribbles for 30sec and then launches a 3
on d- ball you man, in your face defense with a lot of talking and communicating. smooth switching. making the other team; uncomfortable starting their offense from half court
on both sides--boxing out and crashing to boards.
no idea how many wins that will translate into this year, but the future is very bright on the bluff.
*instead of a brick by brick approach, i think this season will be about laying a solid foundation

DUQ is not a good job right now, and for as much as we are taking a chance on this hire, the new coach is gambling with his career as well.(if you were a manager of a local target with a chance to move into a regional manager position in 2 years, would you quit to go to work for sears, knowing sears may go out of business at any time?)
You can pretty much sift thru all the "great choices" we have mentioned and poke holes in their resumes for one reason or another, have concerns for one reason or another...fact is, they don't want to come here.
I just think this is a solid hire and want to get behind him bc he wants to be here. he wants to take a chance.
