Maybe these are not mutually exclusive arguments. Certainly both can be true. What makes Duquesne different...a losing record for most of the past 40 years sure doesn't help. If I'm another coach, the easy line is, "They haven't won regularly there forever, they're never going to. Come play for a winner. It's more fun." How do you counter that?

Not sure of the reasons why but today's young people, and a lot of older ones, feel very little loyalty to schools or coaches and sometimes friends, family, or even faith. Everything is transactional. Retaining players, students, employees, congregants, etc. is extremely difficult in 2022 and ideas on how to do it, I'm afraid, miss more often than they hit. If anyone has a magic bullet for retention, don't share it here. Market it and retire.

Neat discussion. Curious if anyone knows what Ajax is up to. Just checked his Wikipedia profile and that doesn't indicate that he's playing anywhere. Another article from January '21 has him busy being a dad. His energy, basketball IQ, and leadership seem to make him a natural to coach at some point. Maybe just not ready for that yet. Hard to believe he's 35. Would be interesting to see him around here again.

Saw a comment above about the current players being great kids. Coach has mentioned attitude issues in the past so I'm hoping this is true. I don't recall him pointing out any problem kids this year. Poor play, yes, but not selfish or lazy attitudes.

As many have acknowledged, there is a bunch of talent on this team, and while some of the coaching has been suspect, is there any indication that KD now has guys with the attitudes that he likes? Wondering if anybody with real knowledge of this could comment. Good grades? Decent campus citizens? If there are no issues in that regard, bring them all back and let's see what this seriously young team can do with this past season behind them and a few more months together. (Of course, some more bulk down low and a sharp shooter wouldn't hurt.)

Far from any sort of expert on any of this, heck I'm barely a knowledgeable fan. However, as a proud alum, I want to see the Dukes do well and I'm going to stick by the team no matter what and cheer for their success and that of whomever is at the helm. I deserve whatever criticism comes my way for being a Pollyanna.

All that to ask another question regarding an issue that is rarely raised here or maybe I just don't understand. How much of an impact has not having a home or even true practice facility for 2 years had on recruiting? Does that lower the number of truly great basketball players and/or truly great kids we could reasonably attract? For comparison, my HS student is a swimmer and runner at a private school with no pool or track which he finds frustrating and certainly knows kids who have gone elsewhere due to that issue. In high school. This is a concern of his as he looks to college, whether he competes or not, he would like a decent pool to swim in and a track to run on.

While it doesn't explain the most recent miss (still a bit TBD in my opinion), how were coaches supposed to sell a program that for years had no dedicated gym? Were they forced to take some chances they didn't want to? Lower skill (impact) or character (retention) than they would have preferred.

Pretty cool event for the Coop! Looks like it was long in coming due to COVID delays. Nice remarks about the facility, the prez, and the university from some rather notable people.

Wondering if anyone here knows if there has ever been consideration of an athletic campus outside of town. It's a model I've encountered at a number of schools that are landlocked where space is identified away from the main campus for various fields and courts and built up over time. For Duquesne, it would make sense to leave basketball and volleyball in town at the new place but soccer, tennis, lacrosse and eventually football could have a small complex elsewhere. Naturally, there are some logistics in dealing with transport but other schools figure this out.

Of last year's newcomers, if we only are keeping a few (and apparently we are), I really like the retention of Acuff and Okani. Seem to be character guys with a pile of athleticism and upside. Can only recall seeing hard work in game from those two and never any chirping. Building blocks that can be developed and aren't a distraction.

Agree with everything above about schollies, hard to keep up.

Great video, great announcement, great vision, great future! It is so exciting to see my alma mater on the rise, taking every opportunity to improve quality, visibility, and all around reputation while seeking to improve the world. I happen to be taking a certification course through Duquesne today and can't help but feel extra proud. Looking forward to getting on campus some day soon watch the Dukes and brag to my kids about what an amazing place the Bluff is and how it made me who I am and ultimately, made them who they are.

This is a great idea! Nursing, pharmacy, PT, OT, PA...DU has a pile of health care programs, many of whom are front line in the pandemic and very likely have been vaccinated. This would send a great message to the community, especially in light of the future medical school that the university respects and takes care of those who dedicate themselves to take care of others. Do it!

Obviously, the arena isn't quite ready to go but does anyone know if the men are using practice courts, locker rooms, and other amenities that are in the new field house. Seems that would be a welcome improvement.

Love the new logo! Looking forward to sporting it on a trip through the Midwest later this summer and not getting sideways looks for the gothic D on my head when in Chicago. Problem is...I didn’t order before the store closed. Anyone have insight on when this gear will be broadly available? Seems they’d want to have it going before campus gets busy again.

Go Dukes!
