This is a very nice article, by the master of Pittsburgh journalism, Gene Collier!.  A great experience for our players to have the opportunity to discuss the roadblocks that Stew and others had to deal with in his college days.  It will certainly heighten their awareness.

I’d give Ron the benefit of the doubt on that account Phil.  That team would have been loaded with talent had the shootings not taken place.  Ron was poised to make some big noise with that team; and once you break through; the train just keeps rolling; and Ron would have been able to follow up with more top talent after a big winning season.
I also liked Satalin’s returning team prior to the rape allegations.  He had the Program headed to the NCAA Tournament!

Right, many mistakes were made in the process of dragging us down from a Top 10-20 program to the bottom 50.  There was the old story about Billy Knight wanting a package deal with his buddy Carl Morris included; and Allegedly Red wasn’t giving Morris a valuable scholarship; so Pitt was more than willing and got a great player while 2 of the NYC guys Left school without playing a game.
I think the landscape was also changing nationally; and after decades of just using the program as a cash cow; Duquesne would have had to invest some money back into the program in relation to facilities, weight room a suitable on-campus facility for smaller crowds; and a first class practice facility.

It’s hard to argue against the original point.  Look at the roster; and you’ll see that the team went ten deep if needed; with future starters Wojo, Roebuck, Montanez with solid McHugh and shooter Roddy coming off the bench.  Davis was a star on a national stage; and had he not left early for the ABA would have been an All-American the next season! Played a point forward position with the great Bucks team with Oscar and Kareem.  He was a most versatile player!    Big wins over highly ranked teams as well.  Mike Barr was just an incredible athlete at the point.  Very fast, agile and with long arms that created many turnovers; eventually played for several years in the ABA With the VA Squires on a team with Dr J.
This Dukes team team could physically dominate you; or if needed run you off the court!

No doubt it plays into the hands of the mediocre P-5 teams to make the field and leaves out the non P-5 schools who don’t win their conferences. Isn’t that just what the NCAA has been pursuing for years!  Load it with P-5 and keep them in the fold; allowing the NCAA parasites to keep milking the system!

If the season is delayed until 2021 we may have  a shot at playing our home games at the Coop instead of being a road show for the beginning of the season.  Maybe things even out in terms of the virus and the Coop opening.

I see Rottrof getting a shot at Steele’s minutes this season.  He would need to regain his footwork and mobility but I think it will come back.  The post surgery loss of mobility and general awkwardness should be gone by pre season practice.  The other issue would be replacing the physicality of Steele.  I’d like to see a more physical presence from Rottroff.  Hopefully he had a good weight set at home!

The two current court cases involving the recruitment of Zion Williamson and Duke involve accusations including cars, money and cash. Which coach was entrusted with the task of bringing Zion to Duke? Whose name occasionally pops up in the court documents?
I believe it's the same name as the coach who was dismissed by a Midwestern University while it was under investigation for illegal recruiting practices. And wasn't that name brought up during. the FBI's investigation into illegal recruitment practices?
Well thank goodness it is not the same name as a anyone we know who suddenly has 4 and 5 star bb players interested in playing for him Or is it an unquenchable desire of top players from far away who have always dreamed of going to that school.
This doesn't reek of jealousy. It reeks of dishonesty. As previously noted above:
People continue to do whatever they do well and do whatever they feel most comfortable in doing. Not talking about this rot doesn't help it go away but placing a spotlight on it isn't a bad start.

Well said apluski!

I suspected you would defend Pitt; but with that aside; KD is is getting players that are clearly within reach of an Atlantic 10 program, and not suddenly hauling in 4 and 5-star talent.  His recruiting has been an improvement over what saw in many of the Ferry years, but perhaps even less heralded than some of the players that Ron brought to Duquesne.  KD has shown the ability to make marginal players better, and have them play like 4-Star recruits.  I don't think this raises eyebrows from competitors as to the use of illegal tactics.  With a few exceptions KD's  guys have been recruited by A-10 Programs or lower.  I know a few listed Big Ten offers; but the opportunity to play early in the A-10 often beats sitting in line at a larger program.

Pitt has no basketball tradition whatsoever until they got tired of losing; and gave Roy Chipman a free hand to over pay for recruits. They paid an inflated price to get Charley Smith, Demetrius Gore and Jerome Lane. Three players that would never have considered Pitt without payoffs. Pitt suddenly had players; they won games, the NCAA took notice! They investigated and Chipman had to be let go or Putt was getting hit with major penalties. Chipman never coached again. Pitt suddenly had a basketball team and players knew they could get paid.
The climate now is much more tolerant of college coaches who pay for the most talented players. It will be interesting to see if Kansas, Arizona, Louisville, NC State are penalized significantly for their recent involvement in paying players and being recorded discussing the payments. History has shown that in the NCAA the benefits of cheating far exceed the harm done by penalties. If you are a big winner such as Kansas, Arizona, Duke, or Kentucky you get a free pass to cheat as needed to win! Is Pitt paying to raise the level of their recruiting? I don’t know; but it seems to be the path to move from a loser to a winner in the NCAA.

You may recall  that Kobe was torn between going straight to the NBA after HS; or spending a year in college.  At the time he had the option.  He had chosen his father Joe "Jellybean" Bryant's alma mater LaSalle College as his destination if college was his choice.  I recall that Joe, a former NBA player himself, may have been an assistant at LaSalle at some point.  OF course we know the history; he never made it to LaSalle.

I think it's pretty funny that '81 thinks RMU will be able to beat Pitt, even occasionally if the move to a new league!  I think we know firsthand that if Pitt has any inkling that RMU can challenge them; they won't play them either!  Simple as that; bring on Morgan State and Central Michigan instead of Duquesne and RMU.

Stew,
I give you credit for your creativity and enthusiasm for your home town.  Perhaps WQED should do a special on the history of The City of Duquesne!  Wasn’t there an old story about Sihugo Green’s first trip to Pittsburgh when he grabbed a cab at the bus station and asked to be taken to “Duquesne” and the cabbie  took him out to the “city”; not the University?

We have a game with Maryland already; a top Big10 team that has been aTop 10 program in recent years.  Pitt is an ACC bottom-feeder; who cares about playing them next year; or any year; we don’t need them.

I don’t see Capel ever getting the Duke job.  He just isn’t the caliber of coach to be considered.

I would make no commitment to play them if they won’t play us this year.  Picking and choosing which Dukes team they want to play is not an option.

Exactly what I expected from Pitt.  They are dodging an experienced and successful Dukes team this year; but will play us next year after Mike Hughes and Marcus Weathers have graduated.

Next season's game would have been a good match-up that would have set the stage for a true rivalry in years to come!  Sadly, Capel doesn't appear to want this to happen.  He wants guaranteed wins, in the non-conference games, since he has struggled to compete with even the lower tier of the ACC. It is clear that Capel doesn't really have any interest in being part of the premier game in the City that would have been great for local basketball.  So be it; just move on; perhaps Bob Huggins will give us another game; although WVU will be a bear next season; much tougher game than Pitt!

I agree with Phil.  I don’t think anyone on this board has any information as to the inner workings of the Andre Harris recruitment.  So, please can we just let things play out and stop making assumptions.  Speculation like this can only do harm; and no good.

This is another in a long-line of NCAA decisions directed at destroying the Mid-Majors ability to compete with P-5 teams on the rare occasions when they actually play each other.  This works to accommodate the P-5 in two ways; the obvious ability to poach the best players from Mid-Majors and makes it much more convenient for them to jettison their recruiting mistakes; and quickly get those scholarships back.
It always pissed-off the P-5 that Mid Majors could build a roster of juniors and seniors that would kick their ass; despite all the money they were spending paying off their top 50 recruits with large payoffs.  So now the P-5 can go shopping at other D-1 programs to fill roster spots while ensuring they will finally escape the embarrassment of losing to someone like Northern Iowa.
The spineless, money hungry NCAA administrators like Emmert just suck the teet of the P-5 to keep themselves swimming in $$.  They are foul and disgusting parasites, who really have no place in college athletics.  Mid Majors should get out of the NCAA, form their own governing body; with its own championship; screw the P-5 and the NCAA.

7,8,9 no doubt in my mind.  Three quality Conference road wins against teams that badly needed to win at home!  Unlike any Dukes team I can recall!
