BTW to Walsh and some of the other idiots in the local media, kids still want to play and many times they will play for coaches much more than schools. Pitino at Iona is a good example of this. Yesterday Southern Utah beat Rice and their big scorer was a Illinois transfer!!!!! I’m legally challenged so I’m not sure how this was accomplished but, Tshiebwe was able to circumvent the rule that foreign players can not be paid since they would be in violation of their student visa. I guess he could take on US citizenship. I’m sure the legal minds will be hot on this one especially with the recent influx of foreign talent. Phoenix right on the money no pun intended on Grant. It didn’t get a lot of notice but early this season he lost two players to the portal and that further shortened his bench for the remainder of the season. Tyrone Baker a 6’9” sophomore forward and Kaleb Washington 6’7” forward. Gents, the A-10 has plummeted badly over the past few years. KenPom had it ranked 12th out of 32. Looking at the NIT and understanding that they have to first invite conference winners whom did not win their conference tournaments it leaves little room for the A-10. Dayton ended at 78, St.Louis at 96 and Fordham at 139 in KenPom. Being a 15 team league with almost half rated in the lower third is an obstacle to this conference gaining anywhere near the prominence it once had. I hate to say this but after looking at this list of potential teams is this what we aspire to. Save your money and stay home! This does absolutely nothing for the program. Once Dae Dae got his third they should have gone ZONE if not earlier. LaSalle doing nothing but driving it down our throats. DIXON where is he. Gunn can’t score and can’t play D. I’m done!!!! Pistol you and CLK are absolutely correct in your assumption that it would have been a no brainer to sign on for this outcome based on last year’s disastrous season. What you can’t deny is the frustration of knowing it could and should have been better. Believe me I only speak from the frustration of knowing my time of seeing a tourney appearance is on the clock so to speak. It’s also the frustration of seeing what I believe is an obstinacy by Dambrot to necessary change. We all seem to overlook certain truths about this team and expect different results. I’ve said it before in another thread and I’ll state it again Dambrot will not compete with the true elite teams until he changes and I don’t see that happening. Unfortunately both Fordham and ourselves were picked as conference bottom dwellers! The A-10 is an absolute joke in comparison to non power 5 conferences. The league has very little juice with their TV partners. Grammy I like the plan! Stew you are on the money we were out rebounded 41-28 and our smaller guards were badly exposed. The cover for that were 21 turnovers by UMass, our 12 steals and 22 assists. The two headed monster of Brewer/ Rozier had a decent night last night but in half of Brewers playing time McGriff nearly equaled his stats. City we allowed Davidson to dictate tempo in the first half of the game. We needed to change things and not sit by and watch. Dixon is quicker and more athletic than any of our 5’s he would have posed problems for the Davidson defenders. What is really sad is Dixon is playing at a position he shouldn’t be. He’s a 4 and I would love to see a line up with him at that position. Can anyone explain to me how Dixon doesn’t get significant minutes for this team every game. If you don’t think he could have made a big difference on Saturday we aren’t watching the same games. Early on in his time here at Duquesne Dambrot brought in the sports psychologist to help change the attitude. But I question if it isn’t himself that needs to believe he can change the dynamic. The Dukes came out tight and flat against Davidson while knowing for days this would be one of the biggest crowds at the Coop. It’s time for Dambrot to step up his game and give his team its best opportunity to win. KD’s obstinance with regard to defense will cost this team any chance of winning the A-10. St.Louis went into the game 293 in 3pt scoring. He can never adjust out of his man to man. We offer NO different looks, other than minor adjustments on switching or playing ball screens we are predictable to a fault. The other persistent problem all year has been a lack of attention to “boxing out.” We are 14th in the league in allowing offensive rebounds. That should have been addressed a long time ago. I'm sick and tired of saying this over and over since I realize he will NEVER change ZONE!!!!!!! Dambrot late game coaching is an absolute mystery. I can’t understand his combinations. Both small guards on the court to be shot over when Bonnie’s need 3’s. Dae Dae inbounding the ball? I could go on. Bonnie’s 25 turnovers and we have 15 steals and your barely survive. City Duke I’ll accept part of the challenge as to where are all your friends. I’m glad you totally buy into McGriff being “healthy again.” There is absolutely no guarantee that he will see significant minutes in the near future. I also like how you miss the fact that Dixon was “healthy enough” to play 2 minutes at mop up time. I wouldn’t look past all of Dambrot’s statements during his pressers as hyperbole. Earlier this year he stated that after pulling McGriff for what he thought was an ill advised 3 that he hadn’t “earned” the right to take that shot. Also if Dixon is so badly hurt why does he put on a dunking exhibition in warm ups? Gents, I have been a stanch KD supporter and I believe in weighing his years at Duquesne one must consider the effects of COVID and the NCAA’s response. Although the Palumbo make over looks great and was a tremendous plus the extended period he and his staff went without offices and basically function out of suitcases also can’t be diminished. It’s been a long time since I felt comfortable in saying the Dukes have the best player in the city on their roster, in Dae Dae. And what a shame that it’s in total obscurity!!! 😪😪😪 Mudder interesting point on the “will” to win. I’ve thought over the years the Dukes needed to learn how to win games. Often in the past games like last night would have slipped away. I’m I mistaken in thinking that early on KD actually had a sports psychologist come in? When he was helped off the court he couldn’t put a lot of weight on it. He was on the end of the bench with it packed in ice. Fortunately we should be able to give him some time to heal with our next two opponents. Gents, this was my 3rd trip to Akron for Dukes game and by far this was the best atmosphere. The crowd was very engaged and surprisingly Colgate had a contingent of fans. Dukes response to the comeback and the injury to Reece really commendable. The game definitely changed with his injury. Dukes need to have one of their bigs or a poor foul shooter inbound the ball. Because of Brewers size he would be easy to trap but by far either he, Dae Dae or Hornsky need to be your foul shooters. IMHO what I believe many are missing is the fact that Dambrot’s insistence on playing man to man no matter what is the deciding factor in playing time an then ultimately to players disengagement from the program. Mike Lewis was a early example of this when he couldn’t fit into the mold KD was looking for. Many felt last year during the prolonged losing streak it would have been a much better fit for the Dukes to be playing a zone with Hima as an anchor.

We also can not underestimate the ability of coaches to totally out coach their opponent. Painter at Purdue suffered that fate the other night. Like KD he stubbornly adhered to man to man defense, frequent and inexplicably substitutions and an offense built around a small freshman point guard that other teams quickly figured out.

We were soft all year being beaten on the boards continuously. We were 14th in the league for giving up offensive rebounds. Dae Dae averaged 4.7 rebounds a game similar to our “bigs.”
We relied far too much on 3 point scoring. No one points to the 14% showing yesterday as evidence of this. 40% of our shots are 3’s.
We get to the foul line less than anyone else in the league because other than Clark we don’t have a finisher.
our best 3pt shooter had 4 attempts yesterday because we do NOTHING in our offense to get him open looks.
We brought in a 5’8” guard who was supposed to be an assist machine who averaged 3.4 for the season and was a defensive liability.
City Duke one last thought for you, you said Dixon was a 5 who needed to “learn,” how to play the 4?????
Dixon is a 4 who Dambrot forced to learn how to play the 5!!!!!! Further more how can anyone explain a player of his talent playing 282 minutes total for the YEAR.
This coach would rather play experience than talent. Men's Basketball » Game Thread - University of Massachusetts Minutemen (H) » 3/03/2023 8:16 am

Fordham took Brewer out of the game by using a bigger guard to harass him while bring the ball up court. I’m anxious to see what adjustments Dambrot is going to make to change that. They also have a power forward in Moore who like Kante tonight had his way inside. Men's Basketball » Game Thread - University of Massachusetts Minutemen (H) » 3/01/2023 10:38 pm

One last point, someone please explain to me how Dae Dae doesn't get a shot in the second half until 10 minutes in. All year long we haven't done enough to get him open shots. Go back an look at film of Duke when they JJ Redick. They would run him off of double and triple screens. Men's Basketball » Game Thread - St. Bonaventure University Bonnies (H) » 2/11/2023 3:41 pm

We should all pull back from our expectations considering the Dukes shot a near impossible to repeat 53%from 3. Eliminate the four 3’s taken by Reece and it’s 61%. They also had an incredible 22 assists 10 of which came from Dae Dae and Reece not our point guards.
The problems are still there, we get far too many points from 3, we go to the foul line far to infrequently and when we get there we are 254th (KenPom) in percentage. We are 344th, 14th in the league in allowing offensive rebounds.
Let’s hold back on the parade and remember this was ONE game. Men's Basketball » Six-Way Tie for 7th Place » 2/01/2023 3:54 pm

Here is my primary problem with KD and his hard headed attitude. I’m not sure where Dixon and Q are but I believe sickness and injury are great excuses for the doghouse. During one of KD’s post game pressers someone asked as to his substitutions and he answered with its a “feel” thing for him. I may not have the exact wording but I think you can all get the point.
Last night while watching Syracuse I thought about a 2/3 zone with a back line of Dixon, Williams and Barre. The front could be Clark and Dae Dae. I don’t see that configuration getting beat to death on the boards. Also the length and quickness could cause teams problems.
Looking at KenPom we are 14th in giving up offensive rebounds, we foul far too much and our two point defense is 12th. A ton of which are layups or easy put backs. This defense especially playing two terribly undersized guards is ridiculous. Men's Basketball » Who's the next coach? Dambrot never got to NIT/NCAA in his 6 Years! » 1/29/2023 9:08 am
I’m definitely not an apologist but I was willing to give him some leeway. What I can’t excuse is his absolute stubbornness in defensive sets, the lack of an offense that at times looks like a bad high school team, his insistence on putting guys into a doghouse from which they can’t escape and the maddening combinations he has on the court.
For all of his talk about toughness we are soft and are constantly beaten to loose balls and getting beat on the boards. To continue watching fouls committed 35ft from the hoop because we want to play in your face man to man has become boring. I won’t go on but finally we need to face the facts that the A-10 is slipping and slipping badly. Look at the KenPom conference ratings from this year. The A-10 has slipped to #11 from a starting point of #7. He came to escape the MAC being a one bid league I don’t see the A-10 being a multi bid league again for awhile. BTW at 63% Dae Dae has to be one of the best 3pt shooters in the country. Men's Basketball » Hima in Portal » 5/12/2022 5:19 am
