I love the grit in this team. We were out rebounded by 7 at the half and came back to win the rebound battle 43-41. Two key rebounds by Rozier in the last two minutes. Great team effort, but I have to say Dixon brought some fire last night. GO DUKES!

Great game great atmosphere
Truly on the edge of my seat
I echo all the comments on Clark
Let me add he was in foul trouble not because of defense but because of 2 very questionable offensive fouls he received. He indeed was a difference maker!

Here’s also hoping that Savrasov bounces back and Kareem continues to improve

I really like Andrei.  He brings experience and great basketball skills to the Program. Not to mention that he seems to be such a well rounded individual.
If he really is 6-8 233 as the PSN article states he could play the 3-4-5 although the 3 is probably his best fit for us.
He really can score in multiple ways, either back to the basket and facing as well as an accomplished 3 point shooter. His stats suggest he is an excellent rebounder also which we lacked last year.
Welcome to Duquesne Andrei. Its going to be fun watching you and the team succeed.

Are we out of scholarships?

My scholarship count:

Tre Williams
Dae Dae
Jimmy Clarke
Kareem
Drame twins
Dixon
Chabi
Matus
Savrasov
Kailon Nichols

So 11.  2 more still available

Add Andy Barba = 1 left.

I am no longer sure how NILs affect scholarship limits.  Remember we started the last year with 15 player including Easley.  I would not b surprised to have more than 13 to start next season.

Still up in the air is Reece.  Will he get a red shirt year and will he actually count on limit?
Always very interesting at Duquesne.

Based on the information available, I really like this commitment because so many strong mid-majors are shying away from taking high school/prep school kids in favor of seasoned performers from the portal that in some cases greater value can be found than in pre-portal times. I also know that if you must have a 6' tall PG, it is no small consolation that he have a 41" vertical, a 6' 7" wingspan, & have done a post-grad year at 2022-23's #1 ranked post-grad program.

https://hargrave.edu/news/national-recognition-rolling-in-for-the-tigers/

I agree with all you said Phil on Kailon
What really jumps out to me along with his strong statistics from being second team all American is the 59% FG percentage! This means he can hit the mid range jumper (as seen in the videos) but even more importantly is he obviously can take it to the rim and score amongst the trees! Something we lacked this year other than Clark from our guards.
Great pickup and I’m excited now to see how we use the last 2 scholarships. At least on paper this team is rounding into shape.

Thanks Gram and if he does get another year would it count against the scholarship count?  Since the extra
Covid year allowed players to use that year and not count against the limit.

I am with you Motor, but I think the coaching staff is well aware of the need for a true big/5.  It wouldn't surprise me if we actually get 2 bigs as Burre hasn't played a lot and we haven't heard anything about his medical condition.  Dixon is a 4 and should stay there.  I want to see where Matus plays as I think he can really good.  I agree that Darthard appears to be a 2 so I still wouldn't mind a 6'3" PG as well.  With Carney and McGriff in the portal and with the guys that have moved on (Easley, Rotroff, Reece and Brewer) it seems that we should have 6 scholarships available, but someone please verify for me - maybe I missed someone.  If I am correct we still have 4 left to offer so it will be interesting to see the composition.

Pistol I believe we have 3 more scholarships available to make 13 magic number. If by chance we sign the 2 visitors this weekend that will leave us with one.  However lets see how creative the Dambrot clan is?

I like these 2 players.  Hopefully one or both sign up.
However we still need a Center 6-10 or 6-11 player for the final roster spot. He does not have to be all league but someone who could get you 8-9 Pts, 6-7 rebounds and block 1-2 shots per game.
What about PG then?  I know Rozier will play 15-20 minutes but who will be either the starter or backup PG?
Darthard appears to be a 2G.  From watching Clark play he could also play the point.

I am also of the PRO Drame Twins.  From what has been written by multiple sources about the competitive fire they possess.  This translate into a great TEAM players who are winners.  They have 4 years of D1 experience and have been through the wars in NCAA, A10 and Foreign competition.
McGriff was a selfish offense only player who although played some point was also heavy on turnovers at the least opportune time. For his size just hung around the 3 point line and seldom took it to the hoop or was an effective rebounder.  Similar to Gunn who could shoot but did not use his size to our advantage.
I am excited to add these guys and look forward to the 2 next recruits that will be coming.  Hopefully an experienced 6-10 or more and a true point guard 6 foot or more.
Unless Carney is being groomed to take over the point.

I agree with what you said.  He did not seem to fit in the team chemistry.  I wish him well in his next choice.
We now have 4 scholarships available if I am not mistaken.

I love Rozier. He’s a spark plug. A vocal leader. Very energetic and a very good point guard. I am sure glad he’s on our team.
However having said all that I too think he would be best coming off the bench for 15-18 minutes a game because of his size defending.
He’s not lightning quick like a Muggey Booogs or Calvin Murphy that would make him elite for that size.
Perhaps he grows a couple inches or becomes a player like Gilyard was. Until then I’m still in favor of a 6-1 or 2 PG from the portal that can both score distribute and defend!
As the saying goes can’t teach size even for the PG position.

Levon I like Rozier as well but we have a big problem at the point that needs to be fixed if we are going to take the next step.  We need a big guard who can take it to the basket consistently and either score or get fouled.  This past season our starting point guard only attempted 15 FT's in 729 minutes of play.  Rozier only attempted 31 FT's in 498 minutes.  Combined our two point guards only attempted 46 FT's in 1,227 minutes.  To put that into perspective this year Sin Carry attempted 149 FT's in 1,284 minutes.  We need a bigger point guard who can drive the ball.  Kareem is a very capable ball handler and assist man with a 2.7 A/TO ratio but if he is going to lead this team next year he needs to step up his scoring and getting fouled is a big part of that.

Cant agree more plus the bigger guard helps in defending the other team with a less likely scenario of shooting or passing over a smaller guard.

Knowing that DU will half-ass a new coaching search, I have no problem with keeping the coach around.
I dont think he is fighting for anything I doubt any suit at DU is considering pushing KD out, not one. They have no clue, or desire to work, research, interview or have to pay more. 20 wins is easy to justify keeping. He will be the coach as long as he wants. Harper is so dull and useless foreseeable future is the best he came up with....he has no clue, except when that pay check is deposited into his account.

Maybe he is a lot smarter than people on this board give him credit for. Maybe he realized the the same old small thinking of firing the coach every 4 years only to start from scratch is what helped get us in this hole to begin with. Look back at the bad decisions that were made before he got here. Some of you guys think we are Duke not Duquesne. We all want to get to the top of the League and get to the NCAA but to do that in today's world requires dedication, consistency, luck and money. Want to win donate to the NIL fund. Tell business you may deal with about the NIL fund. Batching on this Board may help relieve tension but does little about helping this program. I am not directing my comments at you Towson but is meant as a challenge to all on this board.

First time blogger...Long time follower/supporter/alum of Duquesne & DU Basketball here. I am trying to restrain myself with this comment made above (TowsonKid???), but there are some things I will give some prospective on.
1.) I understand there are a lot of keyboard warriors out there that have mixed emotions and feelings about the Past/Current state of Duquesne Basketball. With that being said... a lot of the negative comments are from a "Fans" with little to no (zero) knowledge or understanding of the operations of college athletics, coaching at a Division 1 level, or let alone if the ball used on the court is pumped or stuffed.

Could Duquesne MBB Be CBI Bound? - Pittsburgh Sports Now

Here is my thinking on the CBI.  The CBI as a tournament is meaningless. It does however allow a team to keep playing and improving for next season if a team is committed and in it to win it.  However, looking at the Dukes right now we have 4 guys who hopefully will be back that can't play: Hronsky, Barba, Barre, and Carney.  We have four guys that won't be back: Reece, Gunn, Brewer and Rotroff.  Plus Dixon is hurting and may need work done on his knee.  It doesn't do much for us improving for next season.

I could be wrong, but I think next summer we are eligible again for a summer foreign tour.  I would rather put that money into going someplace nice next summer with our full roster and using that as recruiting tool.  IMHO we are very close if everyone returns.  We need maximum effort right now in recruiting better replacement parts. All hands-on deck recruiting.  No misses and no excuses.

I like your analysis CLK but my feeling is I can go either way as I see benefits to both methods of playing or not playing and concentrate on recruiting.  I am however an old school guy and love seeing us play no matter what although at the same time a one and done would push the knife deeper into my heart but a win would buoy my confidence in the team and system.  Bottom line is lets support this team what ever the circumstances dictate and keep playing and or building the team for next year.

Motor, it is great having you back on this board.  If not for the pioneering effort of you, Denny and Len we may not have had these forums.  Wish we could get Denny back posting again.

Over the past 45 years the biggest obstacle in the path of DU hoops has been the inept administrative leadership.  We finally, I believe, have a president and AD that get it.  I absolutely agree that there is no way Harper fires Dambrot.  Dambrot will either decide to retire or get an extension.

FAM, the goal of getting back to the NCAA has not changed.  I don't believe that Dambrot or Harper have lowered the bar.  I think Harper realizes how step the hill is and recognizes the progress of this coach and what he has accomplished.  I think he will not listen to the anxious voices like other ADs and fire the coach and land back at ground zero.

Thanks CLK its great being back.  Folks also dont forget that CLK was also a founding father of the Dukes Boards.
