Concessions

Hey fellow Dukes Fans,
How are the concessions at Duquesne Games?

Re: Concessions

Horrible and a embarrassment!!!!!  Also another reason to avoid Dukes games. Many other schools that I would put in a mid major category have Chick-fil-a, or a local vendor supplying something better than old hot dogs and stale popcorn!!!!!   Forgot the service stinks too.

Re: Concessions

The addition of beer was a good move.  I seldom buy any other concessions. I don't see a lot of people buying food at the games, so I would assume it's not too good.

Re: Concessions

Hopefully that's something the new AD will try to address

Re: Concessions

Honestly I have seen high schools do a better job than DU.  But that is low on my priority list.

You are probably right, but anything you can do to improve the experience for casual fans is a good thing. We need them to come back again

Re: Concessions

Wow!  Did you pick a good topic.  The service is poor.  The AD is aware...in fact when I was in line during the Bonnies Game he was standing in front of the Con. Stand watching things.  The line was extremely long and the  service extremely slow.
Questions...we don't employ those folks, do we?  I thought they worked for a company that has a contract with Palumbo.   Second, in past years, the stands shut down before the game was even over...do they still do that?

Re: Concessions

The Palumbo Center concession stands are the absolute last place I want to buy something to eat on game days.  I've only done so when circumstances force me to do so.

I did eat lunch in the Towers cafeteria a few years ago.  What a great improvement from my days on campus in the mid 70s!  My thought is that the Palumbo concession company should be let go and whomever is running the Towers cafeteria and other campus venues should be given Palumbo Center as well.  Then the students who have meal contracts could use those at the concession stands.

Re: Concessions

Duquesne dinning center is through eat and park actually. But very good idea VBC, students should be able to use their "flex" points at the games for food.

But at the same time I don't care about this....only here to talk about discuss how to turn this ship around.

Re: Concessions

If better concessions will put more students in the seats, it's worth the effort, but I doubt that the students fail to support the teams because of poor food, or long lines at the concessions.  The location and design of the concession stands was poor from the outset, but more variety and good quality options should still be explored.  I assumed that Parkhurst, ( Eat N Park commercial group)  who currently has the food service contract also supplies the staff and food for Palumbo.
I think the concessions got off to a really bad start the first ten years or so, when Duquesne was paying off the building, and contracted with DeCesare-Engler to manage the facility and book concerts and other events.  D-E also handled the food concession and really did the worst possible job one could imagine.  Poor quality, limited offerings, short-staffed, disinterested and rude staff.  They really did nothing with the concessions.

Re: Concessions

It's Eat 'n' Park. Why don't you guys all get together and run it yourself?

Re: Concessions

How do you know DE managed the building, they didn't. You must work at DU and were put off by the concerts?

It's hardly worth responding to you, but to set the record straight, I never worked for Duquesne, but knew Joe DiCesare peronally and spoke with him at many events.  I enjoyed many of the concerts, saw Elvis Costello, Steve Winwood, Tears for Fears and Blondie at Palumbo.  Duquesne basketball was of course not drawing big crowds and Duquesne needed the concerts for revenue.  I believe that worked out well, because they helped to pay off the debt on the building.

Was that the Costello show where Nick Lowe opened for him? Great show!

Re: Concessions

The main problem with why the Palumbo center is so terrible is because its operated by Duquesne University, not a third party. You see a lot of arenas, pavilions, centers ETC operated by a third party or management group. For example Ryan center (URI)  is operated by Spectra venue mngmt. Monumental sports (GMU) the company that owns the wizards, caps, DC WNBA team operate the eagle bank arena , Spectra venue mngmt also operates Chaifetz arena (SLU), The Mullins center (UMASS) is operated by spectra mngmt... You see the schools that use a management group host concerts and other events in order to generate money the management group takes the largest cut and the school will get a percentage and the management group will be in charge of all aspects of the facility... really a win win if you won't to have concerts and your athletic dept is flexible and wants to see some of the money. The palumbo center is piece of (profanity) and should be operated by a third party and have them throw a few million in to it and allow them to host concerts and in return the MBB and WBB team would benefit but theres no leadership at duquesne and there hasn't been for 40 years so it will continue to be a crap shoot.

Re: Concessions

Truth be told, Duquesne concessions was never that great.  However, the real downward spiral occurred when the Nacho Guy was there.  He personally destroyed the concession business, as well as contributing to the poor performance to the basketball team in general.  Most are too young to remember, and it is not a pretty story to retell.  Basically Duquesne fans just need to let it go.

Re: Concessions

How about this, WIN, Don't blame the pretzels, nachos. You understand. If you have product on the floor all things like money and quality of "Nachos" fall in line. That's it, Win!!! Never gonna happen though.
