It was a week to enjoy!

Our men won a game in a not quite awesome tournament, our ladies won in dominating fashion in the Big Dance, the Pitt men lost in round 1 (Haha), the Pitt women didn't even make the tournament (a pox on you Susie), THUGGINS LOST in round 1, the Bobby Mo' women lost (just to throw that in, no ill will against the Mo' women).

I'm past the point where I get pleasure from other teams losing. I just want us to win.

I do understand '81 but I need solace in something other than a bottle of cheap Spanada.

Re: It was a week to enjoy!

I'm fine with Duquesne being 2-0 and Pitt, Mo and the Hoopies being 0-3. Really, I am.

I agree, we get laughed at enough by most local sports fans and the media, when they are not ignoring us, the "Eat Excrement Pitt" crowd and comments just makes us look like delusional morons.

Say what, Tejas? I'm not part of the Eat <Rhymes with Pitt> crowd, I am the crowd.

I'm the last guy left who thinks it should be a rivalry, and who hates Pitt in a competitive. Part of it, I've never been someone who likes sand kicked in his face all the time.

At least WBB does its part.

I'm on the I hope Pitt loses every game side. I would expect most people who've been Duquesne fans since the late 60's like I have feel the same way.

Well, it looks like Dixon may be leaving Pitt. He's the main reason why Pitt doesn't bother me anymore. He's a good guy. I remember when he visited Ron in the hospital, and they listened to the team beat BC. His refusal to get down in the mud has pissed off the jerk segment of the Pitt fanbase, so the win at all costs crowd is happy he seems to be on the way out.

Think they go after Archie Miller, which starts a chain reaction that brings Toole to Dayton?

If Miller is patient, he can do better than Pitt. Look where his brother landed? I'm sure they'll try to talk to him, and Sean too.

Re: It was a week to enjoy!

I don't think Toole is on anyone's radar right now after the issues that he has had at RMU this year.

Re: It was a week to enjoy!

I too will always remain in the eat sh*t Pitt chants crowd as well. I went to Duquesne. We play them every year and it's a big game for us. There was a time I'm sure other posters remember (I wasn't around at the time) when the roles were reversed and it was a big game for Pitt and we usually won. So there's history there. If the Browns started beating the Steelers every year or the Cardinals did the same to the Pirates I wouldn't feel any less of a sense of hatred or a rivalry towards those teams, because I'm loyal and passionate for my team, no matter who's playing or coaching. That sucks some of us have adopted the "rollover and take it" mind set in regards to currently better teams.

Big difference between SHOULD and IS!  Until we beat Pitt, and beat them 3 out of 4 times or so, where the "blind pig" argument can't be used, it's still a "pipe dream." Sorry my friend but dem's da facts.

Re: It was a week to enjoy!

You feel that way because you never saw the rivalry in its heyday. I saw some nasty, intense games between the two schools. Rivalries don't go away because one team can't keep up its part with being competitive. How many centuries did the Red Sox go as baseball's afterthought while the Yankees seemingly won every year? Never once heard a Boston fan think there was less of a rivalry.

Did you play sports in your time Tejas?

Yes nasty intense rivalries between guys whose grandsons are now playing.

Baseball is a little different because of the use of series and the general 50-50 nature of 162 game season. The Red Sox could crow about winning the season series from the Yanks 12-8, even in years when the Sox finished 6th and the Yankees won the pennant or the World Series. We play Pitt ONCE  and lose to them almost every time, so we never get to crow about beating them in the regular season.  Pitt goes to the post season almost every year and we have never gone to the "World Series" in the last 40 years, and (to stretch the metaphor) we have made LCS (NIT) twice in that time and the first round of the playoffs  (tertiary tournaments) twice!  You can call it whatever the hell you want, but it's not a rivalry right now!  It's a walk over for one team, that most Pitt fans don't care about and you are one of the last of the breed of die hard Dukes fans, that gives it meaning.!

I want it to be a rivalry again and mean something. Sorry Dude, it doesn't that's a fact. You and I both live far away from Pittsburgh, but if you and I were sitting in the same neighborhood bar anywhere in Western PA,  and you started going on about the great current Pitt-DU rivalry, I would probably laugh in your face until you took a swing at me.

And what in the world does your last point have anything to do about the price of England's breakfast beverage in Cathay?  Jeez, is that your best argument?

Re: It was a week to enjoy!

Tejas, I don't understand your hostility just because I disagree with your opinion. "Dude?" Why the disrespect?

I asked the question because I want to understand the context for why you believe what you believe -- nothing more. It's not about "adding to my argument," it's about understanding your perspective. Nothing more.

Re: It was a week to enjoy!

Yeah "dude" this ain't a contest. I live in Pittsburgh and I can also say your correct people here don't consider this a "rivalry" in the sense that it has been competitive recently. For me, and I think El Duque, that doesn't mean sh*t. There is historical history, wins on both sides from an all time perspective. For me, it's a rivalry in the sense that while they've kicked our ass repeatedly in the recent past, we are merely on the bad side of the rivalry currently as was the case for Pitt in the past. If we win 2 out of the next 3 because Pitt could experience major rebuilding pains due to coaching turmoil would you then say it's a rivalry? Which leads to my next question, how can you sometimes and sometimes not have a rivalry with the same team based on who's winning at the time? We may be the little brother in every facet, but it's still a rivalry and Duquesne can still beat Pitt. It just hasn't happened in forever.

And I don't understand your hostility to mine?  The "Did you ever play sports" line was insulting.

Re: It was a week to enjoy!

Question: Poll any group of 100 Steeler fans as to who is their current most hated and bitter rivalry, and I guarantee you 90% or more would say the Baltimore Ravens, not the Cleveland Browns.

Funny thing is, I have cousins in the Cleveland area and they are still such die-hard Steeler haters, it's almost comical.  They refuse to credit Pittsburgh for any of their success, their hall of famers, their enviable record etc, like any true Pittsburgh fan would give their grudging respect to the Cowboys.  None of it, they just say things like "F**k Pittsburgh" and cheer anytime the Steelers lose to anyone and email me when the Browns occasionally find the acorn and beat the Steelers.

Sound like anyone on this board?

Wow. I stopped reading and posting on the board months ago because I felt like any time I expressed an opinion, I had to deal with barrages of insults, some of which contained real hostility. I came back because I missed talking basketball with friends -- some of whom I've known for decades. But this kind of thing could make me change my mind again.

I've had good things to say about Jamie Dixon, even if I've done it in a way to suggest I'm "giving the devil his due." Anyone who knows me -- and I'm sure this is one of the problems with message boards -- knows I'm not a hateful person. I can separate sports from life, and in fact a lot of what I say here is done so in a joking manner.

I mean, c'mon! Do you think I have some form of Turret's syndrome that causes me to say "ESP" randomly or something?

I've said this before: the rivalry for me is real. Doesn't matter to me that we can't compete with Pitt and its resources (for those of you who live in PA, YOUR tax dollars are included in that), the rivalry will always live in me because Norm Nixon, Bruce Atkins, BB Flenory, Mike Rice. Because 1980 NIT in front of 16,000 people. Because I want to have pride in my alma mater, and because rivalries make sports interesting for me.

Feel free to disagree with me. My position is no different than any USMA plebe or graduate believing they have a rivalry with Navy. That's been an equally one-sided affair for decades as well.

I think the DU-Pitt rivalry is lost on many others because our fan base, for the most part, has lost its passion the past four years. Duquesne may have better days ahead but we will never, ever, ever have the resources to compete with Pitt. Pitt will always be able to wave magic cash at stuff and make it work for them. That doesn't make the rivalry less intense for me, it makes it more intense.

Re: It was a week to enjoy!

El Duque, my friend, the Pitt rivalry is real for me as well, and for many others as well who have a historical perspective.  I remember when Pitt was the little sister and Duquesne was the big fish.  Does that mean that I think DU will ever eclipse Pitt as a Program? No I think it is too late as we missed our chance decades ago.  Unless somehow by some miracle years from now after runs in the NCAA and huge investments by DU we join the Big East or the A10 rises to that level.

BTW, I am really glad you are back. I enjoy your posts, and the level of discourse and is much better since you returned.

The Browns are now third on the totem pole, and dropping. Not only that, but I'll say that Steelers/Ravens is better than Steelers/Browns ever was. Steelers/Browns was most intense for those 10-15,000 fans who made the yearly trip up the Turnpike to get their tires slashed, and have trash thrown at them. The Steelers, and Browns have rarely been good at the same time, while the Steelers, and Ravens have won 4 Super Bowls over the last 16 years, and their battles have always been high stakes in the war for AFC supremacy. It's like it would have been if the Raiders had been in our division back in the 70s.

Re: It was a week to enjoy!

Steelers-Bengals is heating up big time. Losing twice to the lowly (for a year, anyway) Ravens really hurt Pittsburgh because it cost them at least one home playoff game.
