Disgruntled

What a pleasant evening we had on Friday.  A long drought against hated Pitt has been broken.  I sure hope B.B. Flenory was there because it surely was a very satisfying win.  I didn't see him there nor at any other home game so far this year.  Perhaps, like me, he is disgruntled.

Now we're both exceptionally gruntled about Friday's win, no doubt about that.

This was the first time ever that I thought we had no chance going into the game.  But I did tell the friend that I attended the game with that even though I didn't think we could win, I did think Pitt might be able to find a way to lose to us.  And by golly they obliged by shooting poorly and playing generally uninspired on their way to scoring only 55 points which turned out to be very fortuitous for a Dukes team that scored 8 points less than their season average coming into the game.

But an extraordinary win doesn't change my outlook.

The losses to Canisius, UT-Martin and UMBC are not overshadowed by beating Pitt.

Can the season be turned around?  Yes, it can.  Do I think it will be based on what I've seen so far?  No.

I agree with duq81 that winning the rest of the non-conference games is a must.  But I want to see more than .500 in league play to approve of Ferry keeping his job.  I think 10-8 in league play should be the bottom line.  It's year 5 for this coach, 10 wins in conference play is not asking too much.

The turnaround must be underway.  It has to have started on Friday.  There can be no more bad losses.

I want to be gruntled for the rest of the season.  Sadly, based on Jim Ferry's past record, I don't think I will be.

You can't fire Ferry if he goes .500 in league play. That would be a major step forward from 5 wins last year.

Re: Disgruntled

The pressure will be on because now I know what the team is capable of. They can find their shot, don't just blindly throw up 3s like they tended to do towards those 6-7 minute stretches where pitt caught up in both halves. They finished at the hoop. They rebounded well. Their defense was solid. Their poise and composure, when dealing with Pitt runs and that soft press, was surprising. And they took care of the basketball.

They won't win every game like that without luck. But there's a lot of solid, smart, fundamental basketball that will at least satisfy me, and the pure athletic talent that's there can carry the rest of the way.

Dukes, I know what you're capable of. Show it to me again.
