Dear Alumni, He may get it! He may get it! He's much more visible than the last president was. He went to the Kentucky game, went with the football team to Jacksonville, and stormed the court with the students. I love it. I know ken well from my three years in law school. He is/was very connected to the DC politics scene (as evidenced by 3 Supreme Court justices visiting during my time at Duq law), which makes me think that he gets how marketing and appearances help a brand. He really increased the profile of the law school, here's to hoping that he does the same to the athletic programs/university. Letter from Ken
I just wanted to let you know how grateful I am to the many alumni who joined us in cheering on the Dukes during the City Game against Pitt on Friday night. This historic victory will be remembered for years to come. It was wonderful to meet many of you, and to see first-hand the enthusiasm you continue to have for our athletes and our students, even though you may have left the Bluff many years ago. I truly appreciate the emails I've received and the social media posts congratulating DU on its win.
I was also impressed with our students, parents and alumni who showed up in force to support the team, dressed in a sea of Duquesne colors, and joining the Pep Band and cheerleading squad in cheering on the Dukes, filling the PPG Paints Arena with excitement and energy that was contagious. When the buzzer sounded and the Dukes ended the game with a 9-point victory—the first win in this classic City rivalry in 16 years—our fans flooded onto the court to join our players for a spontaneous celebration as jubilant team members hoisted the trophy atop their shoulders. It was a sweet moment, one that showed the whole region (and country) how special Duquesne University is. Luckily, I was able join the excitement and to share this moment with our players and hundreds of students down on the court. It was a memory that I will always treasure as I complete my first semester as president.
The whole night shone a positive light on Duquesne University; it reflected the great spirit of optimism that defines us. Let’s Go Dukes!!!

It was very encouraging to see the new Prez, Ken Gormley celebrating the win down on the floor
with players and students. The follow-up letter was also a first class move by Ken. Based upon my observations to this point I think the Prez realizes the importance of strong athletic programs as a bridge to alumni, students, friends and the general public.

I was at the game and our student section was louder and more engaged throughout the entire game than the Pitt students, even when the game was close. We also had the same size if not larger student attendance. I think it shows the potential for student involvement given they feel they have something to show up and cheer for.
Think about it this way, in two hours the result of one game brought more local, regional, and national attention and coverage to the university than it has received in years for any reason athletically, academically, and otherwise (besides the blizzard). This is the type of stuff that can really put you on the map. It's like a big free advertisement for Duquesne.
The words from Ken are nice. However, actions always speak louder. Interested to see what the tangible investments in the program look like in the near and long term feature with him at the helm.
