Fordham Game

So they sit at 6-7 and have had some bad losses, including to Manhattan, UT-Arlington, and a 36 point loss to ETSU. They haven't beaten any good teams either. I know we aren't exactly world beaters right now, but you would have to think we should pull this one out, especially with the confidence a three game win streak provides (this statement probably could have been made leading up to the RMU game unfortunately).

Whoever has the KenPom hookup, what do the numbers look like for the matchup?

Their 23 point blowout win over CCSU who we only beat by three points was preceded by a SIX GAME losing streak. Tough to say which Fordham will show up tomorrow, hopefully the latter.

Re: Fordham Game

7pm tip Friday at Fordham's Rose Hill Gym. Per KenPom:
Dukes #210 (7-6; 0-0) vs  Fordham #203 (6-7; 0-0)
Fordham is ranked 12th of 14 in the A-10.
Game prediction: Fordham by 4, 67-63 - Dukes with a 36% probability of a win.

Re: Fordham Game

This is actually a key game if we're to be anything better than a bottom feeder. A road game vs one of the weakest teams in the league. I'm sure that Fordham has this as a must win.If you want to reach .500, you have to beat weak teams on the road, and all but the elite at home.

A loss at Fordham would be another nail in Ferry's coffin.  He can't lose this game and still expect to be back next year.

Re: Fordham Game

Two stats that point to big time problems for the Dukes, Fordham has almost twice as many steals as their opponents and they have a 100 less turnovers. Both of these categories are big problems for the Dukes and have been that way since day one under Ferry. The Dukes aren't aggressive enough on defense to generate steals and they show for little respect for possessing the ball.

Three of their next four games are very winnable. The other, VCU, is tougher, but at home. Win all four, and the tone of this board would change dramatically. Even winning the three easier games would show improvement.

Good point, Dome. Fordham is ranked #2 in the country in both Turnover % and Steal %. Fordham is forcing turnovers on nearly 3 of 10 opponent possessions (29.2%).

Re: Fordham Game

UT Arlington is #62 and ETSU is #82, both pretty good teams. Fordham's bad home loss is against Sacred Heart #311 and their bad away loss is against #197 Manhattan.

They don't have any good wins; the best is at home vs. #198 Saint Peter's.

Re: Fordham Game

Roll out the ball and play.

I'll flog these two horses one last time, unless the trends continue:
1. We have a solid core of Smith, Lewis and Mike. We need better and more consistent post play and better and more consistent perimeter help if we want to have a big season.
2. Smalltime Jim better start earning his $3M. Start coaching these kids, damn it. I don't want to hear we're down by one with 15 seconds and he huddles them up to say "play hard."

Yeah, I'll jump on the bandwagon but it has to get started first.

While I certainly hope to win all four, I think 1-3 the most likely record after 4 games.

If they only win one of the next four, you can lower the coffin into the ground, and start putting the dirt on it. In fact, I see tonight as pretty much a must win.

I'd like to feel optimistic, but the Fordham defensive turnover percentage can be a big deal, given the difficulties we have seen with the Dukes breaking a press. To achieve turnovers at that percentage, they must use a lot of (effective) full court pressure.

I agree.  If they can't go into Rose Hill Gym tonight and come out with a win it will be virtually impossible for them to get enough road wins in league play to salvage Ferry's job.

Agree with everyone, this is an absolute must win. With the exception of SLU everything is uphill from here. We need to win and probably should, but a loss would be much more significant in terms of meaning towards the future.

A win is positive but just a tiny tiny step in the right direction. A loss would be catastrophic in terms of Ferry's future. Now that I put it that way I'm not sure what I want to happen tonight

Re: Fordham Game

Possibly more of a concern for Ferry, other than winning games, is a picture of Gormley with
the women's team after they beat Pitt.
It appears Gormley takes more interest in the basketball programs than earlier presidents.  Gormley
might not be fooled by Ferry's blather and fire him regardless of Ferry's contract.

My feeling is that 9-9 will, and frankly, should save his job. That would indicate a clear step in the right direction, especially playing well in the second half of the season, which we have done rarely over the last 45 years. 8-10 is borderline, but would depend on how it played out, as well as performance in the A10 Tourney. To get there, I think we need to win 3 road games. With a win tonight, 3 road wins becomes a possibility. With a loss, it would be almost impossible to achieve.

Re: Fordham Game

Streaming the Game vs. Fordham.  Looks like this will be a win in A-10 play.  Thank Goodness!  As Duquesne's defense last year was their famous Let's Hope the Other Team Missies it Looks like Fordham has the same type of offense.  Just throw the ball up from outside the 3 point line and hope it goes in!

Nice half by the Dukes. This team seems to finally be improving. Let's close this out.

Re: Fordham Game

36 Rebounds in first half??  They are on pace for 72. That would have to be a ncaa record. Anybody know what the current record is??

Re: Fordham Game

We really gutted that one out despite going cold in the second half. This team would have lost this game a month ago. Abrahamson was really good tonight, as were mike Lewis and Castro. Good win.
