Re: Saint Louis Game Thread - Battle for the Basement Week

The sad point here is the VERY vocal Ron haters,  when he was the winning-est coach since Red Manning,  got him fired?  I got to know him personally, from the social events, and then thru e-mails. This was a Coach that saw a different game, that adapted each year and grew with his players.  In short, he won with less than Ferry has today, and we were stupid enough to can him. Think Pitt is missing Jamie just a bit by now?  Good coaches are rare. Bad coaches are a dime a dozen (Ferry) and at TOP dollar?? Ron was working for less than Ferry, and still would be, but remember, we fired him? Higher Level?   Right? If the administration had any integrity (probably none) they would admit to themselves their mistake, and fire Ferry, but, we know, they won't?  No integrity!!  Ron filled the Polumbo several times, but  now it's an empty building on game day, were the Dukes lose games all season.  Fire Ferry.

Red Manning? Red did fire a coach with a winning record, but that was Mike Rice.

I don't think he meant Red got him fired. I think he's saying Ron was the winningest coach since Red and he got fired.

Ron had the most wins since Red, but Mike had a better winning percentage. Everyone else is below .500. The best season was 80-81, followed by 08-09, 79-80, and 93-94.

Re: Saint Louis Game Thread - Battle for the Basement Week

The Dukes will be in sole possession of the basement spot in the A-10 with a loss tonight. A Dukes win will result in a 4 way tie for last place (along with Saint Louis, UMass and Saint Joseph's).

Re: Saint Louis Game Thread - Battle for the Basement Week

I'm not a gambler but if I were I'd take St. Louis.  I just don't see this team winning on the road no matter how bad the competition is playing.

Last place on the line. Rivalry Week doesn't get any better than this.

Re: Saint Louis Game Thread - Battle for the Basement Week

watching hockey instead of basketball. the billikens are shooting lights out. is that a product of bad D or just really good shooting from the other team?

Wow SLU 10-12 from three. Dukes are 6-10. Incredible shooting.

Re: Saint Louis Game Thread - Battle for the Basement Week

Darius Lewis has not played a minute. Two year starter.

But he's over 6 feet, so...

Re: Saint Louis Game Thread - Battle for the Basement Week

87-81 final. SLU elected to foul up 3 w/o the ball and Castro missed both ensuing FTs, unable to get the rebound.

this has to be the loss that seals Ferry's fate, right? they might not fire him until after the season, but at this point I've seen enough

He was out coached at the end of the game. Once again.

No surprise.

Down 3 with 8 seconds left and the ball. Lost by 6.

Robinson had game of his life. Played last 5 minutes with 4 fouls. Ultimately fouled out.

A well-earned loss, Jimmy.

Mike Rice was the most fun coach at Duquesne with his antics of "fainting" into his coaches arms after a bad call by refs, pointing out the bad spots on the arena floor in front of the opposing coach and his players before games, then having Ronnie Dixon stealing the ball when the dribbler hit the dead spot.

If he didn't lose Arnold due to grades, ( who became all conference at TCU, I think that was where he transferred) and Duquesne flunking out Ricky Tunstall, a 7 ft stud who could block shots and play, Mike could have become a legend.

Instead we got Jim Satalin and his goofy brother.

Re: Saint Louis Game Thread - Battle for the Basement Week

Great effort by the players, especially Mike Lewis.  With the team racing down court knowing they needed a three to tie the game, that was a terrible, terrible timeout by Ferry with 7.7 seconds remaining.  It allowed the Billikens to set up their defense and essentially control the outcome.

Ferry has got to go — and the sooner, the better.  Barring a miraculous sweep of the A-10 Tourney next month, the Duquesne administration should relieve their deeply-flawed and overpaid coach of his duties as soon as the Dukes are eliminated, which — more than likely — will be in the opening round on March 8th.

Rice used to send better FT shooters to the line when lesser ones were fouled.

Arnold went to SMU, no?

I no longer care about Ferry's shortcomings. I want him to keep messing up. We need for the season to be a disaster in order to get the needed medicine.
