UMass Game Thread - Battle for the Basement Part Deux

7pm tip Wednesday at AJ Palumbo Center. Per KenPom:
Dukes #231 (9-16; 2-10 14th) vs  UMass #121 (13-12; 3-9 12th)
UMass is ranked 9th of 14 in the A-10; Dukes ranked 13th of 14.
Game prediction: UMass by 4, 77-73 - Dukes with a 37% probability of a win.

Betting line: UMass by 3½
UMass 9-11 against the spread; Dukes 7-10-1 ATS.

Yes, it's Battle for the Basement Part Deux
But it's also Survivor - Coaches Edition - Both Ferry and Kellogg are on the hot seat with 2 years remaining in their contracts. Kellogg's salary is $1,000,000 per year; the highest paid state employee in Massachusetts.  Will these coaches survive for another year? Or will UMass and Duquesne be writing checks for the buy out?

Re: UMass Game Thread - Battle for the Basement Part Deux

I am betting, figuratively speaking, that the Dukes win this one based on somewhat recent improved play and the fact that UMass is not very good either. A win might not be best for the future of the program at this time but think the dukes win this one.

Average margin of defeat last seven games (all losses): 18.3 ppg.

Even if the Dukes keep the game close, Ferry will get pantsed at the end.

Re: UMass Game Thread - Battle for the Basement Part Deux

This one has a potential to get ugly for the Dukes. UMass plays at a fast pace, and they also play pretty good defense. They will press to create tempo. Just the kind of game that Ferry and the Dukes get sucked into --- running, gunning and throwing the ball away.

UMass is young; younger than Duquesne (no seniors playing and heavy use of 2 freshman guards). The youth will show up in silly fouls, bad shot selection and turnovers.  But they have been in most every A-10 conference game, they beat Dayton and their average margin of A-10 defeat is 7 points (5 of those losses have been by 5 points or less).

I think the Dukes are headed to their 9th straight loss.

I sure hope so. We need for this to be a no doubt decision.

Re: UMass Game Thread - Battle for the Basement Part Deux

Wow what a play by mike Lewis to end the half! Drove hard to the basket for a tough two and then stole the ball and threw up a prayer from near half court!

Hey, I know Kellog's is famous for breakfast cereal, but he's got to be toast after this.

Exhibit A on why I don't put my money where my mouth is on sports.

And Kellogg is such a bad coach.

And Ferry pulled Lewis out with 31 points. Understand that the freshman record was 32 points set over 100 years ago.

The two freshmen were great again tonight, but man was umass bad. They had the top recruiting class on paper but I would take our two guys over their class any day.

This is all!

When was the last time Duquesne led a team by 42 points, especially a team from a top 10 conference? I can remember us blowing out Miami of Ohio back in 1981, but no other game comes to mind.

Ferry has turned it around!!!! Five year extension for him!!!! We won't lose again this year!!!

Re: UMass Game Thread - Battle for the Basement Part Deux

Robinson hurt? He had a career game Saturday and got 0 minutes today?

And Lewis in the starting lineup? After getting 0 minutes the other day? Any insights?

Mike Lewis is a beast. I-Mike too. Biggest win of the season.

And the heck with UMass. Bad enough we had to suffer those snob snitches in the northeast in the Super Bowl. Any chance to kick a Masshole to the curb should not be bypassed.

Re: UMass Game Thread - Battle for the Basement Part Deux

The announcers mentioned Robinson was injured but I didn't hear what the problem was. He was standing under the hoop when they were warming up for the second half.

Re: UMass Game Thread - Battle for the Basement Part Deux

Robinson was not dressed; most likely injured in practice.  Obviously the team was motivated and swarmed the boards early for some second chance points.  The freshmen LewisII and IMike were outstanding, Mike hit all five 3's and Lewis started off missing maybe his first 5 shots but really got hot and was draining everything after the circus shot to end the half.
Unsung heroes were Castro who controlled the point and scored 11 points, D Lewis who played well, and Blackman who was very steady.  Dukes shot it well most of the night, and could have easily hit 100 plus; but better to clear the bench and get those guys who work hard in practice some run.
An enjoyable evening at Palumbo!

Sarah Spencer at PG reported that Robinson hurt a knee in practice.

So they won 10 games? Well, I lost that bet.

Re: UMass Game Thread - Battle for the Basement Part Deux

Just shaking my head at these quotes from Kellogg in this game story. http://www.gazettenet.com/UMass-men-s-basketball-Duquesne-8130520

And duq81, as you pointed out, I was drinking the Hurley Kool Aid a few weeks back thinking that he was a top tier A-10 coach. After the loss at home last night to Fordham, URI's at large hopes went up in smoke. On the A-10 board, some were comparing him to Brian Gregory - gets talent but doesn't know how to get the most out of it. The post game presser with Hurley was classic; thought he was going to cry or snap.

Re: UMass Game Thread - Battle for the Basement Part Deux

If Mr. Harper and the President have an understanding of who we played last night, and I am sure they do, what took place should not change anything in terms of this being the last year for Ferry.  Stands 75% empty, not much enthusiasm, not many students again, and friends, we beat a very, very, very, very,  bad team.

I am happy for the kids as I really don't think anyone on this board has been mean toward any of them.

URI is basically still where they were under Jim Baron. Not good enough to dance, but too good to fire the coach. NIT every year.

Re: UMass Game Thread - Battle for the Basement Part Deux

While I expected a Dukes win and said so here yesterday, I was as shocked as anyone to see what happened at Palumbo last evening. My congratulations to the kids and the coaching staff for a great performance! Seeing Mike Lewis and I. Mike have the game that they did was indeed encouraging. Just going to throw this out. What if the team won 4 of the last 6 regular A-10 games and got a win in the A-10 tournament to finish at 14-19? Not saying this will happen but what if? Would any feel that the staff won one more year here? Not even completely sure what my thoughts would be. Could be a moot point as well. I do know this was touched on earlier but that was before last night.

Re: UMass Game Thread - Battle for the Basement Part Deux

Pres, NO!!!!!!  I have been shocked this year by the willingness of kids to quit on their coaches and fellow teammates. It really makes you question team as opposed to individual goals. Back to the Duke's I don't care what happens there are far to many flaws in Ferry's resume here to ignore. His decision to play Darius exclusively to the detriment of developing JRob more is tragic. His insistence on playing small and them complaining that it is the reason for their defensive deficiencies is crazy. And finally trying to sell his 10 year plan?  I don't want another day of this garbage.

Re: UMass Game Thread - Battle for the Basement Part Deux

Citizen Dome, please remove all sharp objects, count to 10 and exhale. Everything will be alright.
Word has it, unless there is a long-shot of something untoward,  Coach Ferry and company will encore again next year.

Stay engaged, my friend.
