More DU Hoops Coverage on 93.7 the Fan

So driving to work this morning, following Dunlaps comments about Ferry being in hot water yesterday, he brought up the program again. Called it a great win for Dukes, but really questions whether it is enough to save Ferry still. I know you guys don't like Dunlap (I don't either but for his show not your reasons I'm not aware of) but the coverage is still relevant because he has inside sources.

2 big pieces of information today!!!! Mentioned he's heard this from rumblings and rumors from people he knows around the program:

1. For everyone who was looking for a credible source on this, he has heard from a lot of people in the know that the Palumbo is on the precipice of wholesale internal renovations. The part that gets me excited is that he compared it to RMU in that we will have to play a season as "basketball vagabonds" as he referred to it. To me this is huge, as it suggest the changes being made have to be major major renovations that will affect the seating and court itself for them to be unable to play any games there for a whole season. Also suggests that It will be a large undertaking with that kind of time horizon.

2. He has also heard from many people that there is a very good chance that Ferry will not be the guy to lead them through this transition.

Like him or not, this is good insight into the program none of us have access to.

Re: More DU Hoops Coverage on 93.7 the Fan

Along with an interior overhaul, they should look into the exterior as well, that place looks awful outside, driving up Forbes Ave, its hard to tell there is a bball arena there.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong but he covered the team as a beat writer for the Post Gazette for at least one season. This was when Ron was coaching.

The renovations will be dramatic.  You will not be able to recognize the exterior of the building from the existing  structure.

Ok, obviously one of the guys with some inside information. Care to elaborate?????

Also have to wonder if these renovation plans have been in the works for a while now and were used to help give us the huge boost in quality of recruits we've got in the past two years????

I have been told that the exterior will be stunning, as will the complete project.

102 not the case at all Amodio had no vision or stomach to start a project of this magnitude and I'll leave it at that.

Dome I'm talking about the mike Lewis and isiaha mike class and the incoming class that had a 4 star guy in Darius banks and two three star guys in walker and wheeler (a 4 star and two 3 star class is low-mid power 5 level) and still have the two 3 stars coming in. Wonder if they showed those guys one of those 3D renderings of the new look arena.

More likely they had to promise Harper this to get him to come here. Every new coach or AD gets them to give him something the previous guy didn't have.

If that holds true we should have a pretty damn competitive offer to give to Ferrys successor!

7 figure offer and a state of the art arena?! Dare we dream?

They're not going to get a new arena. They'll make Palumbo as good as it can be made. If somehow they become a winner, they'll move games that will draw a big crowd to the Arena. Cupcake games, and games against mid level or lower A10 teams will be at Palumbo. This is what Villanova and St. John's have been doing for years, and they don't have a pro arena on their campus.

No, because no school at the A10 level would build a new arena with under 7-8,000 seats. They want to make the best of what they have, and if the need arises, big games will be at the Arena.

I have no idea how many seats there will be. I was just defining my statement of "new arena". I would love if they make the lower level a bowl with upper level. I would assume seating capacity would be increased in that scenario.

Perhaps you may change your tune when the full scope of the project is revealed.  Or maybe like the doubting Apostle Thomas, you will need sit in one of the new luxury boxes, enjoy some of the new delicacies and beverages offered at the completely new concessions and lounge areas, and marvel at the increase in openness and natural lighting provided by a significant increase in the number of windows along Forbes Avenue and Magee Street before you accept that you're in a new arena.

Re: More DU Hoops Coverage on 93.7 the Fan

And in that spanking new arena with all of its accoutrements we'll have a bottom dweller in the A10 with the conference's worst coach.

Re: More DU Hoops Coverage on 93.7 the Fan

It would be nice if Mr. Harper announces the new renovation with looking for a new coach.  If he and the President really think about this, is anyone here, there, or anywhere, going to give $$$$ for an update to the Palumbo with this coach and this program?  I won't, and I bet many of you won't, and many other people won't!!!!

So if they want donors for the update, they need a new coach with a vision to begin a competitive program.

Re: More DU Hoops Coverage on 93.7 the Fan

Here is another example of Coach doesn't get it. Yesterday, he and an assistant were out recruiting and the players they were looking at were guards. Our need is bigs. Meanwhile Pitt is bringing in another 6'10" player. I have given chunks of money to the program since the 80s. If Ferry comes back, I will move my seats from the priority $100 a seat donation, so that they don't get that money. Three guards equal ten wins (four in conference).

My logic as to why Ferry will be fired besides the obvious fact that he sucks as a coach:

1. Harper did not hire him. It is an absolute fact that new ad's basically always bring in their own guys when they take over a program. DU would not have let him pull the trigger when he came in due to the length of Ferrys contract remaining. I think we are now pst the point where his contract is a huge financial obstacle. I am encouraged that Harper can do a much more professional and competent search for the right guy, based on where he came from, a program that is an example nationally about how to do things the right way.

2. Why the hell would the university step up and make a commitment like this if they were ok with the current results, which we now have a 5 YEAR SAMPLE SIZE OF. Bottom 3 in the league every year is not what we, Harper, or this unversity signed up for and it all comes back to Ferry and his staff.

3. We are now at the point where game attendance consists of me using my student ID from 2014 to get in for free, the band, the thirty people sitting behind our bench  and whoever gets a free ticket. Kind of piggy backing on my last point, the university would not make this financial commitment in an effort to keep the interest level at an all time low, again, something that comes back directly to Ferry and his staff.

4. Ferry also said in his postgame interview that he was encouraged that his "young team" has finally started to gel and play the right way. Dude, Ferry, how do you not realize the fact that you have a young team is a direct reflection of your poor recruiting record and record level of attrition, your basically calling yourself out. After Ferry gets fired he should look at a job in politics cause that guy can spin with the best of them. I don't claim to think I'm any smarter than Dave Harper or Gormley and those guys have to see it just like we do.

5. The freshman and recruits coming in are very, very promising. Keeping them will be a top priority and things like a new arena and a commitment to find a serious coach will help to offset the we fire Ferry, they leave feelings.

Just my thoughts.

Btw, what is harpers email. I am sending him this list. If we want Ferry gone we should do our part. It can only help if he begins receiving serious, thoughtful emails from the few who care as to why this program is dying. If you are serious and want a new coach, step up and do your part too.

Re: More DU Hoops Coverage on 93.7 the Fan

I doubt that will be the case.  If they are willing to make the kind of investment discussed above, winning will become a requirement of the job, better players will be more attainable and coaches must be expected to win in order to pay back the debt for the renovation of Palumbo.

My understanding was that in the early years after the construction of Palumbo concert revenue played a major role in paying off the construction loan.  They could book concerts again in the new facility; but the
hope here is that basketball will attract crowds that will help pay off the debt from the project.

Let's face facts Palumbo was so poorly designed that it never was an adequate home for a D-1 program.  It was disappointing from the outset; and truly obsolete as soon as it opened.  The sound system was horrible, placement of concessions poor, stairways and walkways just ridiculous.  Coaches office and locker rooms had to be redone a few years ago, since they were equivalent to something a modern high school would find inadequate.  A few positives were that it gave us a home court on campus  for the first time, and sight lines for watching basketball were OK, so at least it was not a total failure.
I'm excited to hear of the major investment Duquesne is looking to make in the facility.

I don't disagree with the basic premise of your commentary; but history shows us that recruits rarely stay with a program when the coaching staff is fired before they enroll.  The school typically grants them a release and they go to another school where they know the coaches.  Don't kid yourself, recruits are tied to coaches rather than schools.  You fire the staff and those recruits are probably gone.

Re: More DU Hoops Coverage on 93.7 the Fan

Bring in a dynamic coach and the recruits will stay. All of Pitt's did when they hired Stallings and he is not the definition of dynamic.
