Re: Fordham Game Thread - The Sequel

What was that?  I have seen players give up on a coach, but this was like the coach gave up on the team.  Do you think Ferry knows his days at DU are numbered?

Re: Fordham Game Thread - The Sequel

Well, that was embarrassing. 18 point loss at home. Dukes were getting effective play out of Sanders who got pinned to the bench in the second half so Smalltime Jim could experiment with an ever shrinking lineup.

I'm sure you big money guys who were instrumental in bringing Smalltime Jim to Pittsburgh are quite happy with the result. Like I said, you can keep him. I'll go watch the Rangers play hockey.

Re: Fordham Game Thread - The Sequel

Can anyone seriously make the argument that this team has improved over the course of the season?

He has to know. He might even be trying to get fired.

Re: Fordham Game Thread - The Sequel

Ferry on the postgame show : "poor decision making by the point guard play" ; "we just got to keep grinding"

That sounded a lot more reasonable in season 2.  Not now.

Great question, CLK.  I was just about to comment that they look like they've noticeably regressed, as evidenced by the fact that they've dropped ten of their last eleven games — not unlike last year's eight-game skid down the stretch.

We should be so lucky.

We beat Pitt for the first time since the Clinton administration and then...........uh......um.....oh yeah we beat Fordham by two points in December......and got a "blind squirrel" blowout against U Mass, so yeah, nothing else while losing most of the last 20 games.

Nope, nothing else of note since then

The last 4 coaches to beat Pitt were fired at the end of the year.

Re: Fordham Game Thread - The Sequel

Anyone pickup on the Assistant Head coach at Fordham, familiar face during the Everhart Era Rodney Crawford.

I am afraid that trend breaks with this HC

Re: Fordham Game Thread - The Sequel

I am tired of speculating and tired of seeing "this is a must win game for ferry to keep his job"

there is nothing dave harper can see from now until the end of the year that could change his mind in either direction. He's either made up his mind that Ferry is staying or will be shown the door at the end of the year. But none of these games matter the rest of the year to his decision.

the women's team hosts a playoff game on Saturday. Might I suggest tuning in or showing up to that? I promise everyone should be a lot happier watching that.

Re: Fordham Game Thread - The Sequel

BTW for those fearful of another rebuilding Neubauer has run off all the malcontents and is down to 7 scholarship players. If you remember everyone had to have Jon Severe it was down to Pitt, Dukes and Fordham. He is long gone. Good coaches can get even marginal players to perform. Bad coaches can't succeed even with 3 and 4 star recruits.

Re: Fordham Game Thread - The Sequel

After the first 5 minutes of watching Fordham playing defense and Duquesne so confused offensively it was a no brainer.Dukes demoralized by a hustling confident Fordham team. A team with a lot of injuries this season.
Dukes received a beating from a  well coached  basketball team.It probably sealed Ferrys future at Duquesne.
Next year is more of the same if Ferry stays.

Re: Fordham Game Thread - The Sequel

For the record, the Rams' leading scorer who was A10 rookie of the year last year didn't play hand injury. Their starting point guard went out with a bad sprain about 15 minutes remaining in the second half and didn't return. Four minutes after that their backup pg fouled out. That's when they started opening up their lead. Rotating 6 players. It looked like 4 forwards and 2 number 2 guards. Sad.

Re: Fordham Game Thread - The Sequel

There are interesting comments on the Fordham board about Duquesne's poor coaching. It is obvious to the other teams, even those near the bottom of the league.

Good observation. I was so absorbed by the nonsensical lineup that Ferry had on the floor when all of his roster (except Robinson) was available to him. Didn't realize Fordham was so strapped and yet kicked our butts.

But don't forget: It's not about winning.

Fordham fans know a bad coach when they see one. Like us, they have tons of experience watching bad coaches at work.

Re: Fordham Game Thread - The Sequel

I am talking to the choir here - I called this loss on the board yesterday -
My last 4 game prediction was 1-4 and it looks like he is looking at 0-4.

Yak-rbc - excellent point - I also think that Harper has his mind made up.  If he needs Ferry to lose the last two to fire him then he is ONLY keeping him for one more year because of the MONEY.  No one is that dumb.  If they have the money he will be gone.  No one can make a point for keeping him after that lack of defense last night and the comments by Mike James...more important is that the PROGRAM HAS DECLINED UNDER FERRY, NOT GOTTEN BETTER!   Mr. Harper...hopefully after the Dukes first loss, whenever that will be, in the A-10 tournament he will pull the plug.  He can use that time to talk with some of the coaches in the stands.

Re: Fordham Game Thread - The Sequel

Obviously the time for playing the "what if" game is past. After the UMass game, I thought just maybe something was going to change . Wrong again! The program has not been this bad since before RE. Unquestionably heading in the wrong direction.  At some point, you just have to take your chances with incoming recruits and current players and make the only logical move. I hate to see anyone lose their job but.....

I'm leaning towards agreeing with you.  I find him to be sorely lacking in many facets of coaching, but I'm thinking he'll probably be back next season.

Re: Fordham Game Thread - The Sequel

If I were Harper, I would pull the freshman and sophomores into a private meeting, and just ask them how tied they are to Ferry.  I cant imagine there are deep ties to Ferry among the current players, have to figure they want to win.  Not saying that should drive his decision, but at least it would give him a feel for the current status of things.

You can't do that. That would be beyond unprofessional. You make the call, and let the chips fall where they will. You can talk to the players after he's fired. What will help is if they can get a replacement in here quickly. The longer the search takes, the more time there is for other schools to try to steal them.

Re: Fordham Game Thread - The Sequel

What a mess.  I used to go to about half of the men's games every year.  When Everhart was dismissed, it took a lot of wind out of my sails, & soon my interest waned in Ferry's first year when he constantly threw the kids under the bus.  I still went to 1-2 games a year because it was a way of life.  Last year I totally lost interest.  I haven't been to a game this year.  Thought about going last night but I worked late & was tired, & I'm glad I missed that train wreck.  I'm not likely to make it to a game this year, for the first time, I think, since 1996, when I had 3 kids under the age of 8 & rarely went anywhere.  I know folks here get tired of rehashing the Everhart/Ferry comparisons.  All I know is that when Ron was the coach & I bought a ticket, I never left feeling cheated.  In the few games I've attended during Ferry's tenure, I think there was only one time I felt like it was money well spent.  Sad to say, coz I'm sure the kids try hard, but this is absolutely unwatchable.
