something I was told long ago could answer why Dukes declined

Background: in early 1970's I managed a deli/ restaurant in Shaler Twp. It was a hotbed for guys talking sports and drinking coffee, day long.
Andy Zezza, the Shaler High basketball coach was a regular, and we developed a friendship talking basketball.
One evening after practice, he came in for coffee, I told him I was going to Duquesne game that night cause I loved watching Lionel " Big Train" Billingy play.
He said that if Red Manning had played it right Billy Knight would have gone to Duquesne. Knights best friend was a kid named Carl Morris and that Zezza coached Braddock at that time and left Red Manning know that who ever signed Morris , Knight would follow. For what ever reason, Red passed on Morris ,he went to Pitt, Moonie Knight followed the next year.

Imagine The Big Train at center and Billy Knight at forward on the same team, maybe Mickey Davis would not have quit the team and that might have changed everything . Don't know but that story haunts me more today than at the time since Duquesne had not fallen yet.

A diehard fan since 1961

Well known story. Apparently Moe Becker, who was Knight's coach before Zezza told Red to take Morris, but Red wouldn't.
