Dejan Kovacevic Comment

From the transcrip of today's show.

Tom: When did your love for Ron Everhart begin?

Dejan Kovacevic: My "love," as you describe it, began when Everhart almost singlehandedly led Duquesne University through one of the most difficult events in school history, when his players were shot on campus and some lay perilously close to death in Mercy Hospital. He took the program from that, in his first year, to five consecutive winning seasons, then had a tremendous class set to arrive on the Bluff for this season.

Instead, Greg Amodio as AD decided to push back the goal posts and preserve his own job by essentially starting from scratch. I "love," to use that word again, the choice of Jim Ferry. He's a good man, a proven winner. But that doesn't diminish that his AD set the program back for YEARS by making the move that he did.

If Amodio goes to X, he will be laughing at those comments.

At this stage this would be a win win for both parties. Ferry has 6 years period. However there is definately a big problem Houston with this program fan student alumni based & media. If they win will people  come will back to support the program. Remember  the 11 game winstreak temple loss in Atlantic City.Unfortunately the declined has continued.Im not buying 6000 sellout conference game if the Dukes start to challenge for the top conference stop.GA has just bought an extension. Right or wrong you have to admire that move of self preservation.I do hope he gets his dream job @ the X.

Self preservation is the number one rule of nature. I believe that had this season gone the way I expected after TJ bailed (not as bad as this, but probably something like 11-19), that GA would have been at risk for being fired along with Ron. Being that a full extension was out of the question, perhaps the best course of action would have been to add one year to Ron's deal. What this would have done, is allow him to survive this season, but would put him in a position where the team would have needed to get back on track next year. This would have been fair. If the reputed great recruiting class was all it was reported to be, the evidence would be pretty clear during their second year in the program. If the new guys didn't live up to the hype, or there were more transfers, then support for a coaching change would have been pretty widespread. Of course, GA might well have been swept out the door as well, which is likely why he didn't choose this path.

Dude, I have been preaching this from day one, and no I am not a Ron apologist, nor do I hope Ferry fails (as has been leveled at me on this forum), the last thing we needed was a complete meltdown and a startover from scratch disaster that we have now.  Ron should have been given the chance with those two recruits, if that didn't work, then fine, let him go at the end of this year.  After the program wins 11-14 games and it wouldn't be a total rebuild.  Now we totally screwed that window of opportunity with the conference re alignments.  Say hello to league games against Cleveland State IF Ferry gets the ship righted!

Re: Dejan Kovacevic Comment

As everyone knows, I am not an Amodio fan....but if RE would have stayed this year or not, we were not moving up in the conference realignmnet.   Of course, we did move down the food chain significantly (perception, record, etc.), but that jump up was not going to occur.

Re: Dejan Kovacevic Comment

Some of you guys just kill me, there is this sentiment that RE got jobbed by GA and that GA is Darth Vadar incarnate.  My goodness, if anyone continues to have a gripe about what GA has done or hasn't done, and you are a vested alum, then show up at his office and get his take on things directly.  Again, I've done it and have been given thoughtful responses.  I have defended GA, in part because some of the prior posts really attack him personally, and I still believe he has done much more good than bad and really is hungry to see success on a "sustainable" level.  I've provided a rationale on why in prior posts and just wish there would be some recognition that he is not a dictator who can order to have done whatever he wants or feels is appropriate.  He has to work within the framework that is Duquesne (for better or worse) and push for what he can to improve the program.  Is he right all the time, of course not, but who is.  People argue with his statement that we haven't yet "earned" the right for a seat at the new conference table, well guess what, we haven't and it isn't Greg Amodio's fault.    Do you think he can say ok I'm doubling the BBall budget?  Hell, don't you think he'd like to have discretion over what can be spent (who wouldn't) and what league we can be in!!   As others have posted, this is the result of a 35 year decline that only got reversed when Charlie, GA and RE (in that order) came along.  It will take a few years of success, and I hope i am right that the foundation has been laid, for us to be a recognized player.  It is a process and the trajectory is not straight up and frankly IMO i think GA took a greater risk by letting RE go as opposed to keeping him and being able to easily justify that decision. I liked the RE hire, I agree RE pulled us out of the gutter and brought us to a respectable level, but I didn't disagree with letting him go either (and the issue on how it was handled has been beaten like a rented mule from all angles so I'll let that rest). Until I see a lack of passion and belief in what the AD is trying to do then I will stand by him through Ferry.  If Ferry fails all GA haters can relax as the dye has been cast and GA's lot rests with JF.  At this juncture I am more interested in seeing who we recruit and how many scholies open up.  Have a nice weekend to all and please be mindful this is not a personal attack on anyone, just offering up suggestion and different perspective.

Re: Dejan Kovacevic Comment

The beaten rent mule you skipped over is the biggest part of the problem.  Ron was very well liked by many alum, and highly respected by the media for his accomplishments.  Many felt that he deserved more time, and were alienated by the way he was treated by your buddy Greg.  He was jobbed by GA & DU, and no BS (no offense) spin is going to change that fact.

Re: Dejan Kovacevic Comment

Amen!!!

Listen people try and say that that I want Ferry to fail because I want Amodio gone.  That couldn't be farther from the truth.   But I'm tired of trying to convince people of that.

Mr. Brightside you have your opininion of GA.   My opinion is based on
on my own dealings with him and the multiple sources who all confirmed the details of how he undermined RE.

Sorry, I don't respect the man or the way he treats people.

Perhaps I would hold my nose if he were successful as the AD.  But he hasn't been.  And I measure success not my making bleachers seats.  I measure it by wins and losses and conference titles and NCAA tournament appearances.  How is his record on those fronts?
