Letter from Dave Harper, DU A.D.

LIsted below is the letter Dave sent and asked me to post.

Duquesne is very pleased that Keith Dambrot is our coach.  We continue to implement our strategy to make Duquesne Men's Basketball a program capable of competing at the top of the Atlantic 10 and reaching postseason play.  As we implement many aspects, one of the paramount objectives is to build our fan base and make our home court a very difficult place for opponents to win.

We need every Duquesne fan past and present to come to our games and bring a high level of energy as we build our program.  Coach Dambrot issued a call and many have responded.  He said he needs everyone to come to games and get behind what will be a gritty, tough, hard working group of kids that will be the foundation of his program.  It is critical we fill the seats and build our environment.  We have seen a surge of past fans renewing seats and new ones coming on board, but we still need more.  We are willing to accommodate any fans needs from single games to full season tickets.  We have had out of town fans buy seats and ask us to put them in the hands of people that will attend.  Momentum is strong and we need to maintain it.

Coach Dambrot, his team, and our administration are asking everyone to do one simple thing......UNITE FOR THE DUKES. We need a great atmosphere to get our team amped for games, attract high level recruits, and get more national television exposure. Anyone who wishes to get tickets simply needs to contact our ticket office.  Also, let's not forget the Women's team as they need the very same support and as you have seen, many schools enjoy dual success with both Men's and Women's hoops.

I also ask fans to look for a schedule of upcoming events around Pittsburgh to meet and speak with our new staff.  This will include a Q&A session and give you the inside look at our program.  Also, we will be offering ticket specials as part of the events.

I thank you being fans of the Dukes.  We are blessed to have your support.

Great letter.  You can feel the excitement in his words.  We finally have an Administration that "gets it".  I see great things for the Men's and Women's Programs under Gormley & Harper's leadership.  Go Dukes!

I found Dave to be an extremely friendly man when I met him at the Gulf Coast Classic, he seems to have a plan and with Coach D he has started to implement it.

The fact he needs to plea for attendance isn't a good look for the program.Win games, and they will come.

Yeah, asking for people to come to games is a bad look.

The casual disinterest of past administrations and officials is a much classier look.

Heaven forbid the AD ask fans to join with the school and build something together.

Re: Letter from Dave Harper, DU A.D.

Here's what I would have written:

""Duquesne basketball is entering a new era with a new coach, new players and a determination to be a champion. This isn't going to be the same old program with the same old problems. We are dedicated to winning basketball games and revitalizing the spirit of the program. We won't be satisfied until we accomplish these goals.

Duquesne basketball: a new beginning. Be a part of it.

(There. It says the same thing but with less begging for attendance. BTW, I didn't mind the final few paragraphs)

Re: Letter from Dave Harper, DU A.D.

Begging? I beg to differ. He issued a call to action.

Re: Letter from Dave Harper, DU A.D.

"Begging" totally not the message.  This letter is marketing.  He is selling what he feels is a new and improved product and urging us "consumers" (alumni, students, and fans) to give it a try.  Duquesne is at a crossroads and the direction taken may be the last chance to stay at a multi bid Division 1 level.  Mr. Harper has convinced me to buy.  My support will be vocal and supportive

Re: Letter from Dave Harper, DU A.D.

So, how many letters have been posted on this board since its inception by the athletic director?

Correct:  "0"

I met him once or twice at events, and that is it.  When I emailed him about reaching out to fans on this board he immediately said "yes".  Let's not get caught up in what words should or should not be used.  He reached out - indicated the need - and has taken the route of "all in" for the program and the fans.  I know that those who voiced "different word" opinions weren't being negative at all.  WE all have different opinions and ideas.  But let's be aware of what we experienced here.  Better yet, I would be extremely surprised if any other AD's agreed to post a letter on their school's blog site - the fact that he has set up this connection is proof of his willingness to "Think Outside of the Box."  There will be opportunities in the future to disagree about items, words, decisions, etc.  But my thoughts are this isn't one of them.  Let's not miss the forest for the trees.

Re: Letter from Dave Harper, DU A.D.

I have no problem with Dave Harper's message to the fan base. I believe entirely appropriate and a great idea. He is doing a great job and, having had a phone conversation with him, believe him to be the real deal. He is making everything happen that he spoke to me about. Could have used him here years ago but this is probably the right time for everything to come together like the supportive  president and board of trustees, etc. Might not have pulled this off years back. The time is now! Let's go DUKES!

Re: Letter from Dave Harper, DU A.D.

I certainly plan to attend more than my usual 1-2 games. Would split a plan with one or two others if anyone interested.  You take the first pick of games.
