Thad Matta is out as head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes

Just when you thought the coaching merry-go-round was closed for the season.

CLK, here's a story with Coach Dambrot in the mix.
http://www.wkyc.com/sports/college/osu/who-will-replace-thad-matta-as-the-next-mens-basketball-coach-at-the-ohio-state-university/446003848

Not that I believe said story.

Thanks Phoenix.  While you never know, I think Butler Xavier & Arizona may be a little concerned with Ohio State right now, but it is after shocks from the hire that potentially concern us.  That's why I hope it is Billy Donovan let the NBA sort it out.

Re: Thad Matta is out as head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes

CLK, after all of the angst that Coach Dambrot had about leaving Akron and the feeling that his Dad's Alma Mater played a role, I would be completely shocked if anything was to happen.  But I have been shocked before with Duquesne Basketball.  Take care.

Re: Thad Matta is out as head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes

Ohio State screwed up by letting Archie Miller to a B1G opponent.

After what we went through, I wouldn't believe a single daggone sports reporter on ANYONE'S job search.

Re: Thad Matta is out as head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes

I googled OSU.
CBS sports and Sporting News listed 7 candidates such as Crean, Cronin, Buzz Williams, and Donovan.
No mention of KD,  Anything is possible, of course, but I would speculate KD is staying at DU.  His father and the support of the AD and President are big pluses for any coach.

I like Chris Mack to get this job and I'd be surprised if Kelsey doesn't replace him at Xavier.

Sean Miller could move, but I almost Mack just going to 'Zona.

If it's Holtman I have no idea.

I doubt that Miller regrets landing at Indiana. OSU is a good job, but Indiana is above them.

Miller doesn't get them as far as their boosters want, he'll be gone like bread and milk before a snowstorm.

Re: Thad Matta is out as head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes

If I were KD, I would be snooping around the last two tOSU recruiting classes and see if anyone wants to jump ship, maybe he has some relationships with any Ohio kids.

Re: Thad Matta is out as head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes

Coach D being mentioned is a "good thing" since it reinforces we got a quality coach.  That writer is just listing logical names - I am sure that our AD already has a commitment with this and one of the things about Coach D is he has integrity.  Remember that...also, he wouldn't come years ago and I am sure he was approached by big name schools.  His son is at Pitt and that was a factor.  Also, I am sure that Mrs. Dambrot has a say in this and after saying yes, moving, etc. to here which was a big decision, Coach Dambrot may be sleeping in the basement if he considers another move after a few months!!!

Re: Thad Matta is out as head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes

Along with Texas AM and Dayton--according to verbal commits.

I give KD credit for being aggressive in his recruiting.

Re: Thad Matta is out as head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes

You have to be aggressive.  He knows it.  Even if the recruit is big time guy, to be one of the first to offer rather than later gives the best shot at landing someone IMO.
If the Dukes can be around .500 this year, I would expect 1-2 star recruits to be a distant memory, we'll be in on 3-4 star recruits PDQ.  A10 conference, big(not huge) city, strong academics(for those who care), nice campus, good known coach....just add a winning atmosphere and record with some student support, whats not to like about that?  Its a lot better than spending 4 years in Dayton, OH.

Re: Thad Matta is out as head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes

Plus Texas AM signed Walker who appears to be similar to Ahrens.
I agee that DU has a lot to offer--certainly as much as Dayton.

I think if a player wants to play in front of 13,000 die hard fans at home and a base that numbers in the low 2,000 to mid 5,000 on the road, Dayton is the place . The winning tradition is very established at Dayton back to the days when they battled the once mighty Dukes in the 1940's, 50's and 60's until today.

Duquesne has a lot to offer in a small Midwest city and potential to become respectable and possibly Dayton's equal, once again in basketball. It would be a miracle to duplicate the fan base anytime soon.

Re: Thad Matta is out as head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes

you consider Pittsburgh a small midwest city?

6/08/2017 1:43 pm  #19

Re: Thad Matta is out as head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes

Yes, with about 330,000 and dwindling. Now there is a large multiple border county area around Pittsburgh and smaller towns and cities in bordering states, but by no means is Pittsburgh considered a large city.

That is not meant to be a negative, just factual.

Pittsburgh is the "Paris of the Appalachians."  Haven't you been following the news?

Pittsburgh has a metro population of 2.3 million, good for 22nd largest in the country. Hardly a "small" city by any definition.

Phil I know your out of state and I'm not sure how long it's been since you have been to the Burgh but it is by no means dwindling. In fact, the development of the downtown area as a whole has been growing at a rapid rate. Ford is pumping a BILLION dollars into having their self driving car technology developed here. Uber is developing their self driving technology here. Google's east coast headquarters is now in Pittsburgh. There tons of other companies headquartering here as well.

Pittsburgh has also become on of the biggest "foodie" or restaurant hotbeds in the United States. Young chefs that have trained in places like New York, LA, and around Europe are coming to Pittsburgh to start their own concepts, I can pull articles for you if you want. Pittsburgh is getting national recognition for the number and quality of these restaurants and bars popping up in the downtown area. All of this business and culture that has been coming into the city has also created the need for the development of a lot of new high end living and retail space that is constantly being opened up around the city.

There really is a lot going on here. I'm not trying to come at you either Phil, but those really are the facts.

Thank you, and I'd hardly consider Pittsburgh the Midwest either. Hell, I'm not really sure how Midwestern Cleveland really is, but it's in a Midwestern state, so that's how people see it, although Clevelanders tend to see themselves as a Great Lakes city. To me, the Midwest really begins at Columbus, and is really nothing like Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh is an inland eastern city, which is different from the coastal cities, but not like the Midwest either. Geographically, Pittsburgh is indeed Appalachian, same as Wheeling, or Morgantown, both of which are in the Appalachian Plateau, just as Pittsburgh is.

Re: Thad Matta is out as head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes

Wow, didn't mean to hit nerves. I lived in South Hills and North Hills over 50 years, born and grew up as a Pittsburger, and still miss a lot about it. Was back in Pittsburgh last August and stayed downtown for a wedding. And really was glad to be back.

I saw much improvement and sometimes almost got lost, after 8 years since my last trip, there was great change.

My point was much of the rest of the country, and especially folks in Philly, NYC, Boston, Baltimore do not think Pittsburgh is on the east coast. It is more in the mid west like Cleveland, Detroit, Columbus, etc.

It was meant as a compliment, as many do not want to be in the mega population centers.

I was in Baltimore this past May, now that is a rat hole, except for the inner harbor.

Phil, definitely not upset at all. Just knew you weren't local and wanted to make you aware of what's been going on in the city lately in case you were not aware.
