Re: Ferry to Penn St. as Assistant?

Being an assistant at a P5 program is not a bad move for Ferry, but talk about the blind leading the blind. He'll likely be looking for work in the spring, as Chambers seat is on fire.

Also a bit ironic in that Ron Everhart was once a candidate for the HC job there. With Everhart at WVU as an assistant and Ferry now at PSU, we may be shedding the "coaching graveyard" moniker. They haven't landed head coaching gigs, but being on the staff at schools like that certainly makes it possible for them to work their way back. PS, Danny Nee went to WVU as an assistant then Merchant Marine Academy at the end of his career, Scott Edgar has headed every Southcentral Missouri-type program there is, and John Carroll ended up coaching the Celtics.

Carroll's coaching gig with the Celtics just to finish out a year after a firing brought a smile to my face. If only he could've gotten Danny Fortson instead of his slow JOTS teammate things might have turned out differently.

When you see the crap floating on Twitter right now, you really appreciate Duquesne for making the change and hiring Keith Dambrot.

Onward.

Re: Ferry to Penn St. as Assistant?

Some musings...
a. I wonder if he told Chambers it would take 10 years to improve
b. I wonder if Ferry's coaching position was somehow linked with Jamari Wheeler's joining PSU

Chambers has already been at PSU longer than Ferry was here, and he's done about as much. PSU isn't a high pressure job, but the three previous coaches all made the dance, and Chambers hasn't even made the NIT. Highly rated recruits are nice, but don't you eventually have to win with them? I don't think he needs to make the dance this year to survive, but if they stumble backwards at all, he's going to get the boot.

Re: Ferry to Penn St. as Assistant?

Glass half full?  I frequent the PSU football board as both my kids went there and loved it. I just read comments on their new coaching hire and fans said how lucky they were to get Ferry and how well he did at LIU.  They said he didn't do as well at Duquesne. Really!?;:/-.

Re: Ferry to Penn St. as Assistant?

Jim Ferry and Pat Chambers are near mirror images of each other. Both well above average recruiters who can't coach to save their lives. Doubt Pat's as good of an excuse maker as Ferry though. He has that market cornered.

Agreed. I don't really understand it from either sides' perspective. Chambers needs an Xs and Os coach, not another recruiter, and ferry could well be looking do another job next spring, as chambers seems to be almost out of chances.

When you see Penn State running the weave to perfection, it'll all make sense to you. ;-)

Yes JC did the interim job and did the only good thing in his career to help former Duke Mike James. He took his starting job from him at point and traded him to Detroit, where Mike became a great defender and played about 20 min a game, and was on a World Champion NBA team, a key player.

Re: Ferry to Penn St. as Assistant?

Jim Ferry is still young and he wants to have a head coaching career in the future. It makes sense for him to coach as an assistant this year and he was fortunate to land a position at a Big 10 school. If it doesn't work out there, at least he has kept his name in play and that should help him get another position after that. I suspect he will have to serve as an assistant for a few years before getting another head coaching job. He is a nice guy and I hope he can learn whatever he needs to learn to become a good head coach.

Re: Ferry to Penn St. as Assistant?

DId you guys see this article?

http://www.pennlive.com/sports/index.ssf/2017/07/penn_state_basketball_jim_ferr.html

Seems to me Ferry was feeding lines to this guy, what with all the stuff about brick-by-brick building & his high-powered offenses at LIU.  I hope Ferry didn't feed the guy this stuff however:

"So, what happened at Duquesne? Not much good. In taking over for Ron Everhart in 2012-13, Ferry was essentially cashing in ($600,000 annual salary) while knowing he had little chance of raising the perpetually downtrodden Dukes above .500."

This is what I have been ranting about. He is constantly posting crap like this.

Re: Ferry to Penn St. as Assistant?

So JF takes the DU job for just the money.  Knowing he will probably fail and be fired. Nice career move.
JF is lucky he got any job at all at the D1 level.  Chambers taking a big chance that JF can devise an offense that works against B10 competition. I wonder what Chamber will think when he sees the weave or  two passes and wild 3 with 5 seconds on the clock.

Re: Ferry to Penn St. as Assistant?

While I completely share your sentiments, the $3M bricklayer is gone. When what's-his-face is fired, Ferry will again be looking for a job. I'm sure there's an AD out there who values his job who thinks Ferry's overall body of work will make him a good candidate. I just hope it's someone we play.

Re: Ferry to Penn St. as Assistant?

Well if these kids at PSU like to be thrown under the bus after a loss, then this reporter will have a field day interviewing Jim Ferry.

He never takes responsibility and that's why he left Pittsburgh as a complete failure.

PSU got a veteran loser coach, to help the current coach who seems to be in trouble.

Some help?
