Offline And what was the difference between Everhart small ball and Ferry small ball? Except that one system worked for five years? Everhart small ball worked ok when he had some talent and experience. Blame your boy , Mr TJ, for leaving him with so little of both. I guess Donovan Jack would have led us to the Sweet 16 like he did Perv State. C'mon man, please tell me how Ferry was going to win with the collection of "talent" on this team? Coach K couldn't have coaxed a winning record out of this group. Judge Ferry after he gets his guys in here. I know no one wants to be patient after 40 years of crap, but that's what we're going to have to be. Offline NCAAs in 4 is a reach. We are in an arms race. The other schools will upgrade as well. We're all pulling water from the same well. Unless we lock down toronto Last edited by Jeralta (3/25/2013 7:35 am) Offline Great news. This is shaping up as the class that we really needed to get! Offline Amen Duq81 I'm here. Talk to me. Offline McConnell wanted to play in NCAA, never would have at Duquesne, so he went to a school that doesn't need him to get in. We went to 1 minor post season tournament with him. Offline Amen Duq81 I'm here. Talk to me. I don't think many see a huge hole at PG besides you. Colter's a freshman and was one of the best in the league. He's going to make mistakes but I saw a better player in November than I did in July and a better player in February than I saw in November. He's not a traditional point that's for sure but he makes things happen. Put a few more weapons around him and I think you'll see him a differently. Last edited by steve19981 (3/25/2013 8:24 pm) Offline Amen Duq81 I'm here. Talk to me. RE didn't come close to running TJ off. TJ was the problem. Arguing with Ron on the court. I have no problem bashing him or Talley, or their meddling dads, who were likely at the root of all this. Offline Steve, trust me on this one. He is not one of the better point guards in the league. He had problems bringing the ball up the court against just about everyone. Penn State shut him down with a couple two-guards who he should have had a quickness advantage over. Game after Winters went off for 20-something, Coulter never gave him the ball. Offline Steve, trust me on this one. He is not one of the better point guards in the league. Game after Winters went off for 20-something, Coulter never gave him the ball. What did Colter do in the second half of that Penn St game? I don't call 10 points and 3 assists being shut down. That was maybe his 2nd worst performance that I saw in after the city game and he still dropped 13 and had 5 assists. Offline I do believe that the holes on the team are being addressed by Ferry and staff. This is shaping up as one of the best recruiting classes we have seen @ DU in many years. Isn't that something that we all can agree on, or should we continue arguing as to the circumstances under which TJ and whomever left the team? Offline Steve, why such an effort to be divisive? Offline Voting Colter to the All-Rookie team gives some indication of how our conference brethren feel about this young man's accomplishments and ability. Last edited by PhoenixRising2 (3/26/2013 11:44 am) Offline Steve, why such an effort to be divisive? You don't think calling people having a "circle jerk" over concerns they have with the program? Last edited by steve19981 (3/26/2013 11:48 am) Offline Anyone see any mention of our recruits in the papers? Offline Anyone see any mention of our recruits in the papers? Offline Steve, what I said is rude, crude, and lewd, but it's not divisive. I didn't ask anyone to take sides. As I said, I'm certain that more people agree with you than with the opinion that I stated, but I stand by that opinion. I want to win, I think you need a great PG to be an NCAA team, and I don't think Colter is a great PG. To the point made by Phoenix, A-10 awards are based on the simplest of statistics: PPG, RPG, APG. Me, I don't feel comfortable with the ball in his hands at the end of a close game. I don't think he'd ever give it up, and I'd be afraid of him being fouled. Offline Ed, I think you are a little off target on Coulter, at least in my opinion. Have you seen any games live? Most of the time, Coulter was a one man band while the supporting players were running hot & cold. True, he sometimes tried to do too much, but he had little help unless Winters or Marhold got "hot". This vein kind of reminds me when you were pushing for more playing time for Abele. I like the kid's spirit, and he does have size, but up close and personal, Abele has hands of stone and I dreaded when they even looked his way. I'm not calling you out, but you really needed to see some live games this year. The team's problems were too numerous to count, but I believe Coutler (and Winters) were the only two positives my untrained eye saw, and I was at every home game (plus the Bobby Mo disaster). I think everyone is just on edge because Duquesne can never seem to turn the corner and we are afraid of some more of the same old, same old. Hang in there Bro! Offline Me, I don't feel comfortable with the ball in his hands at the end of a close game. I don't think he'd ever give it up, and I'd be afraid of him being fouled. like when he got fouled at temple and won the game at the free throw line? Offline Duq 11, bada bing! Right on target. Offline I'm a season ticket holder and went to most games and I agree Coulter is a ball hog and I've got serious concerns whether he can run the point. A good point guard on a winning team has at least a 2 to 1 assist/turnover ratio whereas Coulter was 150 assists to 101 turnovers which is not good. Further, he shot 30% from 3 pts range many of those clanks chucked up early in the shot clock which is the same as a turnover as far as i'm concerned. I'll grant that he's a freshman and had little talent around him and was forced to take the lead. Not a good situation for a freshman. I do DC is capable of getting better and hope Ferry understands the above stats and challenges Coulter to improve. I'm hopeful the Dukes can get a traditional point and move DC to a SG where I think he's better suited. He lost way more games at the FT line than he won. That's a fact. He also had a career 1,000 point scorer this year, so to say he had no options is wrong. Don't remember who said it, but no, I don't want my PG to take every shot. The good ones don't. They need to take care of the ball, and make the offense work. Listen, I hope a year from now we're coming off a winning season and Colter has shown tremendous improvement. I'd be more than happy to eat my words about this. But I've seen guys gush before over players and I've pointed out flaws that I thought would prevent them from getting better, and by-and-large, I've been right.

Listen, you are correct in one respect no one wants to be patient, if they did they would have given Ron 9 years like it took Ferry to take a team in a weaker conference to the NCAA. But look we have an upgrade coach now according to the AD so reasonable expectations to me are a winning season next year, NIT the following year and the NCAA by year 4. Last place in the A10 again next year and we get a new AD.

Problem is, I still disagree. duq81 makes it sound as though RE drove TJ off the team. I think TJ stabbed him in the back, at least inadvertantly (do you like that word, three syllables and all? Not as alliterate as conundrum, but I think it makes me sound smart). But I have no desire to bash TJ, or Talley, or anyone else.
I find it interesting that you guys want to circle jerk over the transfer thing and the small ball thing, but no one wants to talk about the fact that there are serious holes on this team starting with the point guard. I have no confidence Coulter is going to get any better. How happy you think all the 6-8 guys (wait until they show up and they're all 6-6) will be when Coulter's firing up threes from all over the court at a 25% success rate while they're all out of position?
I'm not bent out of shape that players will be asked to leave. I think Ferry should have taken care of some of this last year to give himself a little more flexibility. Of course, without complaining about the returning players, he wouldn't have had much to say to the press. Not that he couldn't have talked about, for example, why he played guys for 18 minute stretches or until they were in foul trouble, whichever came first.
Ooops, my bad. I've strayed from the talking points.

Aaron Jackson, TJ. Talley, Evans, Reggie Jackson, Kojo Mensah, Martin Osimani, Bryant McAllister, Jason Duty -- all better point guards. Tom Cvitkovic was better. Coulter accumulated a lot of numbers this year because he was virtually the only person handling the ball. Talent-wise, I saw nothing that impressed me.
We're in trouble if he's a four year starter.

So if Derrick's assist and scoring numbers were inflated by how often he had to handle the ball wouldn't his turnovers also be inflated as well?
Seriosuly, does anyone else stand with ED on this one?

"Seriosuly, does anyone else stand with ED on this one?"
I'm sure plenty of fans think he's going to be our point guard for the next three years, think he's just going to get better and better, and maybe think he'll be an all-conference player some day. And that's why we have message boards, so we can express our opinions.
I'm not soliciting support for what I believe. I'm just giving you my opinion. I'm also not looking to divide up the fan base.
I think Greg Amodio's done a fine job of that by himself.

Not being divisive. Just curious. I come to message boards to have a discussion, to express my opinion and hear others. If anything, I'm just trying to bring some more voices into this.

Seriously, in TJ's freshman year, he could pass the ball to Damian, Billy, or BJ. Who on this year's team had that experience? I think in the long term, Coulter will be fine, if he gets some experienced and talented support.

Totally wrong...
Trying to surmise the upside of a point guard (especially a freshman) with the lack of talent in the teams' surrounding cast is impossible. For the skills of a point guard to be seen and appreciated, he absolutely has to have someone to pass to, someone who is a threat from the paint and/or the perimeter, and (in general), other players who can take the pressure ball defender off of the PG at times.
No need to say it but we had none of this. Dont' you get it? A point guard relies very much on the talent of the other 4 players on the court...look at this guy Comer at FGCU. He's good, but he's certainly not a giant, but his team is athletic and talented. If he were couting on Abele to throw down the "alley-oops" he was lofting up there; forget it.
At times, when Q, or somebody else was hitting shots, or the few moments when Andre was doing anything in the paint, Colter looked like an extremely good point guard.
Mark my words he'll end up with over 1,500 points and 600 assists for his Dukes career.

Ferry is supposed to be recruiting a JUCO from NYC who I think would be a better option. I'd love to see that kid come here so you guys can see the difference.
