Offline Question of the day after. Would you still consider, playing them at Palumbo yesterday, that we had a better advantage at beating them than we would have at PPG Arena ? I think it was to our benefit to have it at Palumbo. Offline For now, it makes more sense to play these games on campus. However, if we start to win at the rate that KD did at Akron, there will be a significant increase in fan support (see the Pirates 2013-2015). At that point, it would make sense to play bigger games at ppg to increase revenue and give the feel of a big time environment. For now, it makes more sense to play these games on campus. If you become a big winner, then you play your biggest games at PPG. This is what schools like Villanova do. We are of course, not at that point yet, but if a P5 school is willing to come here, you may have to play at PPG. Penn St., and WVU won't come to Palumbo. Offline When there arent any empty seats left at AJP, then move some to PPG. I like our house. Why leave and decrease the home court advantage? Offline When there arent any empty seats left at AJP, then move some to PPG. I like our house. Why leave and decrease the home court advantage? Agree with 2012 and you. As we go, maybe play the bigger ones at PPG but for all the things you can negatively say about Palumbo, it is a really nice intimate environment that doesn't take much to get loud. Offline When there arent any empty seats left at AJP, then move some to PPG. I like our house. Why leave and decrease the home court advantage? Of course you don't move low interest games, but if we become a big winner, you move big games. You can't become a big time program playing your tv type games in a 4,000 seat gym. KD is aiming to get us back to at least where we were under Red Manning. Anyone remember packed houses at the Arena when Villanova, Providence, Notre Dame, and Maryland came in? KD is aiming to get us back to at least where we were under Red Manning. Anyone remember packed houses at the Arena when Villanova, Providence, Notre Dame, and Maryland came in? I do. Great excitement and great fun in those days. Hope I survive to see them again. Remember those games well. So exciting with such a large crowd. Will be that way again! Offline Remember those games well. So exciting with such a large crowd. Will be that way again! Exactly! The big games will be on tv. You can't have recruits seeing us playing those games in a high school gym that looks like an NEC game. You want those kids to see us playing a P5, VCU, or URI in front of 12-15,000 in a major league venue. That would scream that we are big time again. We have to win big to make this happen. Offline I have a different take...Remember the Palestra...small - tough place - if you got a ticket great - if not - oh well. I understand the revenue but if we ever get to the point where we have sold out seasons, I would like to stay in the updated Palumbo for a long while. Packed, it would make it difficult for the opposing team. The other night one could shout and "discuss" right out at the opposing players and at times, Dayton kids responded which they shouldn't have since it meant they were distracted. Again, I do understand "Big Time" and filling up PPG but I don't know if we will ever get back to that. Times have changed. Look at some of the football teams. I am not talking Pitt where no one goes to watch football and I am not talking Penn State or Notre Dame or Ohio State where 100,000 is the norm. But a lot of teams with winning records don't sell out their own stadiums. Not trying to be negative or argue...just throwing out some discussion. Aren't the students back for Wednesday nights game? It would be great if the student section was packed. The issue now is the Dukes have to WIN in front of a large student crowd so they will keep coming back. Offline FAM, I get your point, but the Palestra isn’t small. Used to seat nearly 10,000; after the renovation, now 8,700. Offline FAM, I get your point, but the Palestra isn’t small. Used to seat nearly 10,000; after the renovation, now 8,700. You beat me to this! I don't think anyone thinks we should move games like Fordham to PPG. However, if you really want to become big time again, you can't play all of your games at Palumbo. There are more than a few schools who have a crappy little arena, but move big games off campus, (which we really don't have to do, because PPG is basically on our campus). I guess it boils down to whether you want us to become St. Joe's, a program that pops up with a nice season every 4-5 years, and then disappears, or do you want us to become what Xavier was, a flagship of the A10. If the former is ok, then by all means, play at Palumbo. If you think we can return to glory, then big games at PPG will become a must. Offline Good Point on the size of the Palestra...when I went there I just remember how exciting it was. I didn't know it housed almost 10,000. I just remember the layout and how tough it was to play in. I just want to make Palumbo a DIFFICULT place to play in (as does everyone else). If or When we get to the point that we have sold out games there and beat tough teams and need to move to PPG (which I am sure will have another new name) I want it to be because so many people want to see Duquesne play. LOL! Sounds like something he would do. Offline I digress from the specific thread subject to relate a story about Mike Rice when the Dukes played at the old Pitt Fitzgerald Field House. Dukes were playing Dayton , I think, and a kid from Dayton by the name of Powers, I believe, loses a contact lens after some contact in the game. I'm sitting in like row 1 or 2. Everyone is looking real close to the floor to find it and Mike yells "I got it" and then proceeds to stomp his size 11 shoe on the lens and smashes it to smithereens. Offline I'm pretty sure that the bass drum was courtesy of Villanova. For a long time, they stationed that bass drum right behind the visitor's bench. - boooommm, boooommm, boooommm - all friggin' game long. He came in with a lot of fire, but his recruiting really dropped off his last two years.Letting Chipper Harris end up at Bobby Mo really sealed his fate. Offline I'd us worry about winning, getting the 4K to show up, then concern someone with moving 1, 2, 3 games to PPG. I personally dont like it there, maybe cause its so empty when DU plays there. I'm sure 10-12K would make me change my mind. But we are at least this year and a full 2019 away from that happening. Its gonna take a lot of time to build a 4K+ following that attends most of the games. Offline For all we know, PPG could end up being our primary home for a season if the rumored renovations to AJP end up coming to fruition. This season alone, Nova ($60M), Northwestern ($110M), Cincy ($87M), Houston ($60M), RMU ($50M new arena) are playing all games at off campus venues while undergoing the renovations at a cost a little higher than the rumored number was for AJP. If RMUs new place is done next season, I could see us playing there, PPG and maybe a few at Pitt's place depending on what's available, and if the remodeling job actually takes place at AJP. I hope it does. Has anyone heard any more since the initial rumors?

The outdated aspects of the arena should improve soon as well.

You do realize that if by some miracle, we became dominant in the A10, and were offered a spot in the BE, they would not permit us to play league games at Palumbo.

Don't know if it's true but I heard a story that in early 1960's Duquesne small forward Mike Rice was at foul line in the Palestra and a guy under the basket was pounding on a bass drum. Rice made the first, walked done the lane and kicked a hole in the drum and went back to free throw line for the second shot.

The old Civic Arena basketball floor was placed over the hockey ice and it was plenty cold in there, Mike Rice used to go over to the visiting team's bench before tip-off and apologize for the conditions and made sure to point out the dead spots on the floor. The other teams guards were trying to avoid them during the game usually getting the Dukes more than a couple of steals......I really hated to seem him get fired he was so much fun.

What would suck is if we are really good next year and a new fan has to check a schedule to see where every home game is, and just gives up or gets discouraged by the different locations.
But the year after, DU hoops could be a hot ticket!
