Welcome to SHOO-SHOO, RAH-RAH! The Duquesne Dukes Basketball Fan Message Board!
One of America's Great Message Boards - Any Inappropriate Posts Will Be Deleted!
Offline It seems from reading all the posts that we are at the nadir of our life with Duquesne. For instance, the womens coach has left; transfers of players; Robert Morris beating Kentucky; third in the City; etc.. I need not go on. I have only seen Duquesne play twice in the last few years, this year at UMass, and last year at UMass during the A-10 Tournament. Except for the friends and relatives who sat behind the Duquesne bench, I was one of two fans, that I know of, in the Mullins Center. It seems that the Alumni Department should be encouraged to organize some kind of gathering for Duquesne fans at selected road games-maybe weekend games. Other schools do this, either at a bar or at one of the opposing university's facilities, ( Fordham's Mc Ginley Center.). This would be a social event to lead up to the game. Sure Duquesne loses a lot of games, but, on the road, teams always lose more often than win. I'm not a Duquesne graduate, just a former employee, but I think it would be fun to join Duquesne fans before road games. Therefore I would like the Director of the Alumni Department to think about organizing some pregame festivites next season. At least explore the idea. A live fan base may spur better play from our players. Offline There was one for Georgetown this year which had a pretty nice turnout with a few generations of alums represented. They seem to have these events at DC or Philly road games. Offline They PLANNED a trip to Dayton in 2012 - $40.00 would have gotten you bus fare, game ticket, buffet dinner before the game -- I signed up -- about 5 days before the game it was Cancelled - they did refund my money - told me they NEEDED 40 for the bus etc - 8 SIGNED UP!!!! (and it was a Saturday Afternoon) Offline I contacted the Alumni Association about this past season's Penn State game. I thought I could round up some bodies from eastern PA and NJ. They wished me good luck and offered no help. Offline Welcome fjhryn, I see you've posted before but I think this is the first time I've seen one of your posts. If you were at that first game at State College a couple years ago, we may have bumped into each other. That was a good event, although the original tickets were in the nosebleed seats. The only way we see DU fans in Brooklyn is to qualify for the tournament. You're right, we're not a program that "travels well," but you can go anyplace in the country and there are likely to be alumni. Offline Are there chapters of the Alumni Department in various cities in which Duquesne plays that can arrange a pregame gathering? Cities could include Washington, Providence, Philadelphia, or any other place Duquesne visits. Maybe chapters could make arrangements better than the Alumni Department at the University. Offline Just to answer the questions:

But send money!
Re: Alumni Department
I'd love to see a game at Lehigh or Lafayette before the conference play starts, or any place in NJ (Rutgers, Seton Hall, St. Peter's, Monmouth, Rider, FDU) on a Saturday some time.

Re: Alumni Department
There are local chapters of the DU Alumni Association in New York, Chicago, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. We work with the alumni office to set up, at worst, quarterly events in our regions. One of these events in Philly (where I'm based) has been a basketball game each year (always LaSalle or Temple, as getting enough tickets for Saint Joe's is pretty much impossible because of the allotment provided by the school). Invitations are sent out to locals (I think a 30-mile radius, but maybe 50), and the cost is generally around $25-30 at LaSalle, and slightly more at Temple, which covers food, beverage and ticket.
I have attended all of these games. Outside of a weeknight game at LaSalle (and even that had about two dozen alums/guests), we've had upwards of 40-50 folks or more at the gatherings. It's nice to meet new people, catch up with others, and then enjoy the game together. I've also been at gatherings at Fordham and in Atlantic City. If we qualify for Brooklyn, they will have similar events there.
I also won't lie: When I got to the games, there is usually a tiny faction of people there who are familiar with the team/program. Most are alums who come to network and mingle, not big-time fans.
