Pump the brakes there chief. We weren't even in the NIT in the last projection I saw and a win against a 240-something isnt moving the needle. This was fun, but be reasonable. Duquesne is probably at least 12 wins out of the bubble

Like I said, I went straight by the NET rankings used by the NCAA and came up with us as a 2 seed in the NIT. Of course the committee doesn't only use the NET rankings, and of course there will be upsets along the way in the conference tournies, which slide everyone else down. If you do go just by the NET rankings, we're just outside the NCAA, firmly in the NIT, and even hosting if we can work out a site.

I decided to look elsewhere to see if my homerism was running away with my neutrality, and I've found it isn't. If you want some outside sources, the bracket matrix does a great job of compiling bracketologists from all over. They have 64 projections in all. Many include only the 64 teams in the tourney, most include first four out, some go further than four, and a few even have NIT projections. Most of the 64 don't include us at all because we are more than four out of the NCAA field, but 13 do include us somewhere. Here they are:

https://bracksketblogs.wordpress.com A bracketologist ranked as being more accurate than Joe Lunardi over the last 4 years. Has us as the 13th team out of the NCAA field.
https://nicktursisbestbracketperiod.weebly.com Has us as a 4 seed in the NIT hosting a game against Providence.
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/11cyATmVeR42ZzcnnLSmAsehfchu8MRmydjl8xSV97nc/edit#gid=0 Has us as a 4 seed in the NIT.
http://www.rtsratings.com/nit_bracket.asp Has us as a 3 seed in the NIT hosting a game against Notre Dame.
http://www.inccstats.com/basketball/2019-20/tourney_seeding.html Has us as the 34th team out of the NCAA field, but with an 11% chance of making the dance.
https://www.teamrankings.com/ncaa-tournament/bracketology/ Has us as the 30th team out of the NCAA, but with a  20% chance of making the field.
https://www.sbnation.com/college-basketball/2020/1/7/21054256/bracketology-2020-college-basketball-penn-state-rutgers-north-carolina-cincinnati-duke-kansas-butler Has us as the 17th team out of the NCAA.
http://www.seed-madness.com Has us as the 21st team out of the NCAA field.
http://barttorvik.com/tranketology.php Has us as the 14th team out of the NCAA field.
http://bracketwag.com Has us as the 9th team out of the NCAA field.
http://tonynatocibasketball.blogspot.com Has us as the 21st team out of the NCAA.
http://waywardtrends.com/bryan/BWE/ncaabBracketology.php Has us as the 27th team out of the NCAA.
https://primetimebracketology.wordpress.com Has us as the 28th team out of the NCAA field.

I don't know how large the bubble is generally considered to be; so I don't know if we're on it at this point in the season. Consider though that the easy part of our schedule is over, so if we continue winning we will move higher in the rankings. At this point in the season, the NCAA is definitely still in play, and anything less than an NIT bid would be disappointing.

Wonderful article this morning in the Pittsburgh Tribune Review on Marcus Weathers.  Go Dukes!

Re: Game Thread - Saint Joseph's Hawks

luckymcd, thanks for the research on the current "bracketology".  That's a lot of work to pull together that info; we appreciate it.  It seems like these sites are giving more credit to the Dukes' 13-2 record and the opponents than some of our fans.  You made a key point - as our opponents become more difficult, the value of a win is amplified in these rankings.  Let's keep it going and pick up a road win against GW!

Re: Game Thread - Saint Joseph's Hawks

I'll assume they're all updated through games Wednesday, because it takes a lot of time to thoroughly update bracketology predictions, and that took a lot of time to pull so kudos to you.

But of those 13 that I count, the Dukes are on average 19-20 teams away. That's obviously much closer to the bubble than I'm used to but that's NIT bubble still.

But let's take Torvik because I love that site and users can assume future game results on that site, which is lovely. Duquesne is 14 teams away from the NCAA right now, and even if they show up to Dayton with 4 more wins, they are still 9 teams away, without regarding any other team playing. Losing only to URI in that time, which is "expected" because we will be underdogs, we're still 14 teams away.

I think this team can win in Rhode Island. I think this team can win vs Dayton. But until they do knock off an NCAA team at home or knock off a good team on the road, they're not getting looked at and will be riding the NIT bubble for a while

I hate myself for loving you. Quoting me without the expressed written consent of the National Hockey League is prohibited.

Re: Game Thread - Saint Joseph's Hawks

Lunardi has a bracket for today. 3-0 record has us as the Auto-bid for the A10.

http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/bracketology

Dukes as a 12 seed vs 5 seed Michigan out in Sacramento with the 4/13 being Nova and New Mexico St.

Fun to dream but way more work needed to be done. Glad he adheres to best record just to see what the projected seed would be and I’m surprised it is 12 as I thought it would be a seed or two lower.

All I did this time was click through the links and search for Duquesne. I've done much more research on other topics, but it's always a labor of love. I'm just excited to be talking about the NCAA and Duquesne in the same sentence this late in the season (and not just as a host).

20 teams out of the NCAA is too far out to be on the bubble, but the NIT is 32 teams. Some of those will go to one bid leagues whose regular season champs don't win the tourney. That's enough wiggle room that I can say we are firmly in the NIT at this point. The next step to the NCAA is a big one, but it's certainly still in play if we can keep winning ballgames.

I would have expected us to be lower too. The last at-large teams are usually 12 seeds. So if he has us as a 12 even as the auto-bid it means he thinks we would at least be in the discussion for an at-large bid. How long that discussion lasts is anyone's guess, but at least we would be a team to be considered.
