Interest from Syracuse, Illinois, Arizona, and FSU I guess this recruiting thing is a game. It's like throw the spaghetti on the wall and see if it sticks. There are so many... players we have offered - gotten none - I wonder how many the coaches have seen in person - or just read about and saw on film. Recruiting - when you are a school not very good and not to the NCAA's in decades - has to be so difficult. Recruiting recap - please let me know if there are any changes to this: Nice job ElDuque!! I think Rick is correct because the websites that track active offers, commitments and LOIs don't list him as a DU recruit. Have you seen him play? Is he good? The issue might be depth at his position. Doesn't mean he won't matriculate somewhere and transfer back in the future. I recollect that Ferry's offer was upfront. He would take Collin if Ryan accepted Duquesne's offer. Pretty good idea that didn't pan out. ElDuque, yes I've seen him play pretty extensively over the past 4 years. At Hampton High School, he doesn't have to be "the man". That's left to his brother, Ryan. Hampton's coach, Joe Lafko, plays a system where there's no "superstar". It's an ensemble cast. Collin is pretty adept as a ball handler. He's also a very good passer. He can drive the lane really well, although he defers to his detriment. He can score in tight, and has a pretty good stroke beyond the arc. I believe he's got offers from GW, St. Francis, and New Hampshire. He could definitely help the Dukes. But, if the deal was a package deal, then that's off the table. The prospect that I mentioned earlier will be at the game with me today. It isn't like having the 3rd guard in there helps with ball handling either. What is so hard to understand? The team needs to have TWO guards who can handle the ball and THREE frontcourt players ALL the time. How many years can go by while this team continues to play 3 small guys, one of which can't handle the ball - negating any advantage of "small ball"? I'm waiting for Ferry to show up on the sidelines wearing a velour sweat suit and babushka, signaling that we have given up. If we don't sign a real PG it's the same thing. I'll leave it to you to add the babushka for the universal sign of surrender. Talk about a Red Out, huh? Nice interview by Stephen Nesbitt with TySean Powell: I will tease you guys a bit. Tonight this kid played his first high school basketball game. He did not dress for his school's first 3 games because the high school coach didn't believe in letting freshmen play with the varsity. Apparently starting the season 0-3 with an average deficit of 18 points changed the coach's mind. Coming in off the bench he ended up leading the team to a win as the team's high scorer with 20 points. Will James Ferry still be here by that time though???

Smith should be our top target. If we land him, we have the next-tier PG we need. If Smith and James sign, they could replace Colter and Indiana Jones in the starting lineup. We can then take any of the forward types or Skovranko, because our depth would be significantly enhanced.

If all holds together, although inexperienced, we will have a lot of size in the frontcourt next year with McKoy, Lewis, Robinson, Watkins, Gill, and Powell all 6-7 to 6-11. We need guards who can get them the ball at the right time in the right place. That does not exist on our roster right now.

Having six big men seems like a nice thing for the Dukes, but the reality is that Ferry will let two play significant minutes, one gets bench minutes, and the rest of the "frontcourt time" will go to Indiana Jones and another short player.

It also doesn't help that our starting PG is an awful passer.

I was at a middle school game today watching a 2018 prospect. He scored 14 points in 11 minutes of play with 3 blocks and at least 8 rebounds. The coach only let him play the first quarter and 5 minutes of the third as the opponents were getting crushed.
This kid is now 6'3" in his bare feet and the family pediatrician says growing to over 7 feet is a real possibility.
His ball handling skills are exceptional and he can use either hand in attacking the basket. He has a better basketball IQ right now than some of the Dukes and is a coach's dream when it comes to work ethic and teamwork.
He has been attending Dukes games for 5 or 6 years now and was a ball kid 2 years ago. For those of you who know who I am you may have seen this young man at games with me over the years. His dad told me today that he overheard his on on the phone the other day telling one of his friends that he wants to play for Duquesne someday. Jim Ferry has been aware of him since last year.
It's too early to tell exactly how good this kid will end up being, but I'd bet the mortgage that he'll at the very least get a D-1 scholarship. At best, well, lottery picks come from somewhere, don't they?
