Duquesne bigs question

I've been following the Dukes since the Nelson's were bruising up the opposition. We haven't had too many productive big guys come through here. Lionel Billingy would be at the top of list followed by Alston and Atkins who were both probably power forwards. Achara, James, and Hughes would be next in line for me but who am I missing? Since the Nelson's I'm meaning.

Re: Duquesne bigs question

My favorite big man was the "Big Train" in the early seventies. Great nickname bestowed upon him by Ray Goss. I go back to Willie Somerset's final year which was my freshman year. I remember Phil Washington at 6-8 who played well and averaged something like 12 or 13 points per game his final year I believe. Phil passed away not too long ago. Was a really good guy.

Re: Duquesne bigs question

I was in grade school when Gary and Barry played with JD and Billy Zoft, remember listening on A.M. radio, but I have to say Lionel "The Big Train" Billingy was probaby my favorite Dukes big man.  I remember watching him at the CA, he was highly skilled.  Hell, my buddy LTrain is named after him - and I call his son "Little Train"...love it!!!

Re: Duquesne bigs question

This is all indicative of how bad its been. In the 70's they still had a taste of relevancy, even in the Cinicola years.

Re: Duquesne bigs question

Mickey Davis was 6'7" I think, not 6'10" and I remember him leaving early for the ABA.  I think he got talked into it by the shoe guy.

Re: Duquesne bigs question

I'd take Mike Barr as a PG any day.

And back then there was NO Freshman Eligibilty -- So the NEXT YEAR there were some REAL IRON DUKES - Billingy, Barr, Roebuck, Montanez, Wojdowski, Harrington was the COMPLETE ROSTER!!  They even signed a player in the middle of the season (Brian Devine from ACC) -  Don't know if he actually got into a game but at least he helped fill out "The Layup Line" Before the games!!!!~

Re: Duquesne bigs question

Love this KenOTR and SkepticAl and what a loaded team with the names on the bench 👏 I think we would be hard pressed to come up with a more talented deep team but will defer to Duq81 and his knowledge of Duquesne hoops history! Thank you guys for the posts! PS don't forget Murray Mikenhouse in talking Duquesne bigs who threw the Frisbee better than anyone on campus in front of Towers!!

And let's not forget Murray's talent for flatulence virtually on demand.
