Re: DU picked last by A-10 coaches

Just about all the predictions I have seen have either pick DU last or next to last and now the coaches have also picked  the Dukes as last.  Call me crazy, but I am still hopefull that this team will surprise a lot of people.  I know it is a long shot, but I do not put it out of reach to have a winning season given our non conference schedule. A lot of things would have to come together to have a winning season.  The Dukes are no question inexperienced, and I believe that has played a major role the preseason predictions. I think, however, the talent is there to be competitive in the A10 this year. The key will be team chemistry and coaching.  We should be stronger upfront and have a lot more depth. Soko and Colter should be two of the better players in the league.  We need guys like Jerry & Jeremiah to step up and some of the new guys to give us good minutes.  We will see.

Comments from Jim Ferry at Media day

Calls Brooklyn 'the hottest city in America right now.'

Says Duquesne is a little bit ahead of schedule, significantly more talented and deeper this year, playing with more tempo and pace this year.

Ovie Soko has the potential to be an all-conference performer. Going to play through him. Trayvon White JUCO led the country in scoring last year. Derrick Colter has improved, says he has to run the team but not be the primary scorer. Says if Colter leads the team in scoring, Duquesne won't be very good. Says he'll be a better basketball player this year, won't need him to score as much as last year. Depth, shooting, size has improved across the board. Going to play 9 guys.

Ferry says we can be a 5-6 bid league, raves about the depth and quality from top to bottom.

"Says if Colter leads the team in scoring, Duquesne won't be very good."

Remember how much crap I took for saying the same thing?

I like everything that Ferry said. I think Soko has to be a dominant player this year but guys like Trayvon White have to step up big time. I still think Gill will surprise people and I think if Colter gets to itchy on the trigger finger we might see a lot of Ridenour, who I think will be an excellent back-up at the point. Would love to see Micah Mason eligible. Having a dependable marksman would help the development of the young power players inside because defenses would have to look for him.

We might finish last, but I think we can finish around .500. I think we need to see AT LEAST (caps for emphasis, not shouting at anyone) that much improvement to show we're really rising.

Re: DU picked last by A-10 coaches

Sportswriters, coaches, whoever - they need to have some rationale for their predictions. A team with a bad record last year, lots of transfers out, and a young roster is simply going to be predicted to be on the bottom or near to it.

This year's Dukes could be a big surprise. You have to like Soko's winning attitude and how the young guys are already looking to him for leadership. There seems to be something positive going on, and this could be a pretty good year.

And yes, we don't need Coulter to lead in scoring.
