Royce Parham Unofficial Visit

https://mobile.twitter.com/RoyceParham/status/1449494054518104069

Royce is one of the best young players in the area as a 6’7” soph at North Hills High School. Will receive major attention. Would be a perfect fit as a Dambrot big guard/forward.

Re: Royce Parham Unofficial Visit

Very interesting. Probably will grow some by the time he graduates. Wonder where he will end up? Could it be Duquesne? We are going to hit on a top big man prospect sometime. The law of averages is definitely on our side.

Re: Royce Parham Unofficial Visit

Glad they offered him.   But we got a better chance of LeBron showing up for a Dukes game than this kid ever playing for the Dukes.   He's P5.   Dambrot will be retired by the time this kid enters college.

West Virginia assistant coach Ron Everhart was at a recent North Hills game to see 6-foot-7 sophomore Royce Parham, and the Mountaineers are very interested in Parham. Duquesne assistant Rick McFadden was also at a recent game and the Dukes are very interested. With the way Parham is playing (21 ppg, 10 rebounds, 4 blocks) in the largest classification, with his size and youth (turned 15 only at end of July), look for more Division I colleges to show interest. He could very easily be 6-9 in another year or so.

Re: Royce Parham Unofficial Visit

Sometimes it seems that we are reaching out to players that we have little chance of snaring or those whom no one else wants. Well, again, the law of averages is on our side for sure!!!

Re: Royce Parham Unofficial Visit

Of course Primo and JJ come to mind as players who other schools sought but chose Duquesne over the others. Let's get a few more like that only about 6-9!!!

Maceo Austin chose DU over St Bona and VCU too.  Didn't work out but still

You're right about that Styles. Never could understand that situation. Know that Maceo had very legitimate issues but he never really looked comfortable on the court. Wishing him the best wherever life takes him.

Maceo also had a Penn State offer, as I recall.
If you have a goal to win an A-10 Championship at some point, then you have to offer guys like Parham in your own backyard.  Recruiting is a funny business, and you never know what connections are involved that lead a player to a school.  As was stated on the broadcast of the DU vs UD game last weekend, Dayton made some offers to guys including the big man that were clear P-5 players, but they were successful in reeling in some of those guys to a non P-5 program and they are reaping the benefits now.  Parham my want to go somewhere where he can play right away instead of rotting on the bench and then having to transfer down!  It is a path that teams like Duquesne can use to get better players.  Some kids want to play, and other are OK with sitting; just to impress their friends,  that they are signing with a P-5 Program!.  It's clearly not the best move for a lot of guys, but they get star-struck by the bright lights and lose sight of their own best interests.

You have to offer these guys and build a relationship to have a chance!  Don't criticize what you don't understand.  I always go back to Norm Nixon, who made the point that choosing Duquesne was a great choice for him for both basketball and academics.  In basketball he was able to expand his game in all directions on the court at Duquesne.  He became more that just a point guard, and developed into a scorer, and a defender as well, and rounded out his game, because he had the talent to do more and Duquesne gave him that opportunity.  Had he gone to a high-powered program, he most likely would have been put into a box, and told, that this is what we want from you.  You are to drive and distribute, but we have other guys who can score the ball better, so we don't want to see you taking those shots!  The Lakers saw that he could do more than just run the point, and in the NBA, you can't have guys that can't score on the court for very long.

I saw Maceo at a recent home Dukes game.  Still in school and supporting the team from the stands.  I wish him the best and hope he is at peace

I am reasonably sure that UVA also offered. That was right in the middle of their run as a national championship/top 5 program.
That offer was definitely an outlier but still speaks highly to the kind of recruit he was considered.

Re: Royce Parham Unofficial Visit

This article in the PG really lists out the young talent in the 412/724 area.   Dambrot should offer all of them.   Sophomores, freshman, senriors, doesnt matter.

Re: Royce Parham Unofficial Visit

Any Duquesne coaching staff that doesn't kill themselves chasing this top-end, young, local talent is either lazy or lacking in the balls to land the big fish.

Every year some super-talented kids end up close to home at lesser programs than they could have gone to. Many of these kids form bonds while playing on the same AAU squads & have interest in playing together. The A-10 is a very respectable conference. The behind the scenes facilities are impressive, sparkly, & new right now. Why not DU?

It should be interesting to see what kind of player Courtney Wallace's son turns out to be. His dad was a real talent during a really bad coaching era on the Bluff.
