Offline After watching The Atlantic 10 semifinals, it’s pretty obvious – the offensive key to winning in this league is to have a strong big guy and at least one effective ‘garbage guy’ in the paint, and simultaneously retain the ability to kick it back out to a reliable 3 point shooter. Both Dayton (with Holmes & Smith et al) and Richmond with Grant Golden, Gilyear were effective. However Richmonds’s experienced older players took advantage of the injury to freshman PG Smith and the other Flyer freshman couldn’t handle the pressure—and Spiders finally stated hitting the 3’s. Game over… Offline I agree that Davidson should beat Richmond today; leaving the A-10 with potentially one bid to the dance. Dayton’s loss yesterday puts them in question for a bid and may knock them out. Offline Congrats to Richmond and Chris Mooney. Happy for them! Now we will see 2 A-10 teams dancing. Offline Congrats to Richmond and Chris Mooney. Happy for them! Now we will see 2 A-10 teams dancing. I remember a group of disgruntled Richmond Alumni rented an electronic billboard in the city “Fire Moony”. The irony besides todays win is that every billboard in Richmond is about VCU Ram Nation. Maybe Coach Mooney will get his due. Offline Very happy for Richmond for many reasons. But the main two are: 1. A-10 gets two teams in the tournament for me to root for during the madness. 2. Four graduate students that played their entire career at Richmond (5 years) get to go dancing. It shows they really liked playing for the coach and the school. I watched the game. It was great BB. Offline I read that Dayton was the last team out; if that was true, then you would surmise that if Davidson won yesterday, Dayton would have replaced Richmond in the field. I thought Davidson showed some cracks in their invincibility yesterday, mainly a lack of toughness and will to put it all on the line to win. It certainly puts doubt in my mind as to how they will fare in the NCAA against Michigan State. This isn't a great MSU team by any means, but I'm sure Izzo will notice that Davidson kind of cracked down the stretch yesterday and he will try and turn up the toughness meter against the Wildcats. I don't know if Davidson defends well enough to exploit MSU's offensive weakness which is turnovers. MSU doesn't have the talented "bigs" that they have had in recent years, so I think they will try and drive the gaps hard and force Davidson to stop the penetration. They do shoot the ball from distance a bit better than some MSU teams; so driving and kicking could also work. I think MSU will really extend the defense on Davidson and try and rattle their guards, and their shooters. Davidson may be forced to go inside to their big guy and see if he can score in the paint or kick out.
CURRENT RECORD 9 - 11 (4-3 in the A-10)
The key to winning the A10...
However I think Davidson will prevail over Richmond. I think Davidson's outside shooting (along with inside game) is lights out. Brajkovic, Lee and Loyer will be too much for the Spiders.
Hopefully Coach Dambrot gets a plethora of strong big guys back (Rotroff, an improved Hima and maybe another additional big in Dixon) , and our freshman guards (Primo and JJ) return for another year.
Re: The key to winning the A10...
As far as the Dukes contending with the likes of Dayton, Davidson and St. Louis next year, they will need a lot of new talent beyond Rotroff and Hima to accomplish that lofty goal. Dixon sounds like he can contribute as a freshman; but it will take several more guys who are A-10 ready to make that jump.
