Re: Game Thread - University of Rhode Island Rams

Thanks Phoenix for this and all your pre-game info work.
Come on Dukes come out strong and play hard good defense.
Lets make it a true Happy New Year.
If anyone has read the Rams board they are taking us very lightly saying we are a lousy team.

Re: Game Thread - University of Rhode Island Rams

Read the RI board. Some Rams faithful that watched the Dayton game had concluded that Duquesne has the worse defense in the A10. Hopefully, Coach & staff proves them wrong. Go Dukes.

Re: Game Thread - University of Rhode Island Rams

Awful officiating. Just saw the offensive called on Rozier - fake. Even if it was a foul, the ball was on its way to the hoop before ANY contact. Didn't count the 2 points.

Re: Game Thread - University of Rhode Island Rams

Not sure I'e seen a team that takes so many shots near the basket yet gets so few fouls called as Duquesne.

Re: Game Thread - University of Rhode Island Rams

Tuned into RI’s announcers to hear their recap and they were completely in agreement that the Dukes have all the pieces to compete in the A10.   They cited good guard play and low post play.  They loved Reese.
Last line was that the Duke’s were going to surprise some people big time.

I think DU should offer $1 hot dogs every game. Sure brought out the crowd. Imagine if the offered $1 Keilbossie. Packed house. 🙂

Go Dukes. Happy New Year!

Re: Game Thread - University of Rhode Island Rams

Anyone else notice Kareem physically lift up Joe Reece’s head after he missed a layup and put his head down. On the very next play, Rozier drills a three. Can’t say enough about this kid’s leadership. He’s a winner, and I’m very glad he’s a Duke!

Well that “worst defense in the A10” just held their Rams to 61 points.

Absolutely agree Rozier is a winner. You can see him getting better each game. Poor call by the referees on the charging. A lot of questionable calls today.

Re: Game Thread - University of Rhode Island Rams

Just got back from the game. Nice crowd. Good mix of players in and out. Great play by our guards.  Reese was great. Dae Dae took over towards the end of the game. Williams had a very off game. Our 3 pts percentage was great. And the Hamburger place that was the Red Ring wasn't too bad either. I liked the tempo,  these Dukes can definitely play A-10 ball.

Re: Game Thread - University of Rhode Island Rams

A needed and good win.  Wish we didnt miss as many shots so close to the basket.  VCU game will be a real test.  Students back by Wednesday?

Saw the big guy from Dayton had 32 and 10 today as they rolled Davidson at Dav.

They need to have a promo every game, kinda like the pirates, to get more fans.

Let’s call a spade a spade. The Dukes against Dayton played horrible defense. Dambrot & staff has recruited a bunch of thoroughbreds which can clearly compete top 4 in A10. Coach Dambrot must be the trainer that gets the Dukes to a triple crown. Today he & staff ran sound offensive sets. Defensively the Dukes played hard. VCU is a huge game if indeed the Dukes want to compete to an A10 championship. Go Dukes

Re: Game Thread - University of Rhode Island Rams

The assist/turnover situation was very impressive.
The perimeter defense was once again crap. The difference today was that a poor 3pt shooting team shot predictably poorly.
Having a solid win after losing to Dayton is a positive sign for the program & the unity of the team. Plenty of teams striving to avoid mediocrity would have dropped this one. Not this group.
Gunn & Rozier are clearly KD's favorites.
I feel like the substitutions for the first 30 minutes of game time were preventing rhythm on offense.
This team is much better when they aggressively pursue early offense. KD seems to want this but the guys appear to avois doing it for much of the games. That is an odd trait in basketball players.
I was very impressed with how the guys on the floor closed out the last 3 minutes. It has been ages since I could write that about a conference game.
Have to find a way to beat VCU on Wednesday!

Re: Game Thread - University of Rhode Island Rams

I really like how this team pulls for each other and has each others back. They want to be good and they want to win. Easy to root for this group.

That seems very true. Have to like the way these players work hard and support each other. This is a big difference from the style of offense we saw last year. Also, a big step forward in talent.

Couldn't agree more with this.
Need more offense from our bigs. Any reason why Barre got  only 3 minutes of PT yesterday?

Re: Game Thread - University of Rhode Island Rams

Any reason why Barre got  only 3 minutes of PT yesterday?

Only freshman who got significant minutes was Rozier.  KD seemed intent on using his veterans against the Rams.  Hronsky got zero minutes.  Dixon got 7 minutes.  Barre got three minutes.  But, the grad students and seniors all got major minutes.

Re: Game Thread - University of Rhode Island Rams

Interesting that Barre had 6 rebounds and 6 points against Dayton but could barely set foot on the court yesterday.

Re: Game Thread - University of Rhode Island Rams

Here are the postgame interviews courtesy of Zac Weiss….
Joe Reece and Kareem Rozier
KD

https://pittsburghsportsnow.com/2022/12/31/watch-duquesne-mbb-reacts-to-11-point-win-over-rhode-island/

Keith mentioned that he wanted to go with experienced guys in the 2nd half. Barre also picked up 2 fouls in his 3 minutes in the 1st half, so he was going to sit the remainder of the half.

Also, 26 points were scored by our centers (Reece, Rotroff and Barre); that’s good production out of the 5 spot. We got next to nothing yesterday from the 4 with Williams battling the heel injury and Dixon still finding his footing. The Dukes ended up playing Gunn at the 4 a lot in the 2nd half, and playing smaller with 3 guards (Brewer/Rozier, Grant and Clark)

Totally agree with your comment in regards to the substitutions preventing rhythm on offense.  Seems like the Dukes go on a roll and KD makes subs that interrupts the continuity and rhythm of the offense.

Re: Game Thread - University of Rhode Island Rams

That all makes sense about Barre sitting out most of the game due to lack of experience and fouls.Of course the only way he will ever gain experience is by being on the court in game action. A fine line to walk at times. Hopefully Barre is the center next year and does need to continue to develop. Would hope to see more of him moving forward.
