Abele was brought in by RE to shut the pie holes of those who knocked the program for failing to get another Ricky Lopes.  Ron had zero interest in Abele we all know that.  Maybe Abele got fit after learning that Ferry would use him.

Jeralta, that is not true, of course Ron was hoping Abele would contribute (not just to shut people up as you say). To be fair this right now is not the same Abele that Ron had.  Abele did not work out or practice the summer before he transferred.  He was coming off an injury, and out of shape when the season started.  He transformed his body and game last summer.  I am not saying the coaches did not help him or push but in my opinion much of his improvent comes as a result of his own hard work.  Ron did not have that same opportunity with him.

Re: Maine

Ok i will accept that. Mostly. But Abele was only an after after after thought in RE's run and gun offense.  Abele tripped into the scholarship.  Recall the popular opinion was that Duq needed a big guy. Remember all of the posts and articles about our 6'7" guys doing jumpballs?  Heck we didnt even have a true center on the court 95% of the time. RE had little choice to pass on Abele. I just don't think he ever wanted to use him in anything other than late game inbounding situations.

Re: Maine

Don't agree with "Ron had little choice to pass on Abele".  He was a 7 footer with D1 experience, with the ability to be immediately eligible given his unique situation.  The new Radford coach did not want him to leave, and Ron moved quickly to recruit him hard.  He even met with his parents in Latvia.  Not sure where you are getting your information but not true.

Re: Maine

I've been a big believer in Abele since we signed him. The kid is big and strong, and from what I hear, a hard worker. The role of big men in today's game has changed so much because of the size and athleticism of other players. That's why there are so few dominant ones in the NCAAs now and why there are even fewer in the NBA. But having a guy with the height and muscle to help against taller teams is a necessity. Martins is a battler, and the more he plays, the better he does. He defends opposing big men well, and he changes shots for anyone in the paint. No, he's not Bob Lanier, or Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, or Willis Reed. But those guys are long since gone. I like Abele and I think he will help this program this year and next. Imagine him and Soko on the court together next year?
