Re: Game Thread - University of California Irvine Anteaters

I sure hope they have jet lag and the students haven't given up because we will need both to win!

Think this one will resemble the Clevland State and Princeton games in terms of excitement and the closeness of the score.

I feel that the Dukes match up very well with UCI. Getting stops leading to transition offense is going to be big a big part of this game. Chabi / Dixon should both now be in game shape and ready to contribute more.

Call me crazy but the referees were very kind to Duquesne tonight. Justice after the Nebraska crime scene. Go Dukes

Re: Game Thread - University of California Irvine Anteaters

Real nice game from Savrasov and Dixon, combined 27 pts, 12 bounds, 6 blocks and 4 steals.  It's encouraging to beat a quality team without Grant or Clark having one of their frequent stellar games.

Re: Game Thread - University of California Irvine Anteaters

I thought we decided after an earlier game not to inbound it to Dixon with the game on the line.

Re: Game Thread - University of California Irvine Anteaters

That was a battle! The refs let the boys play tonight, and it got PHYSICAL at times.  But they were consistent all night, so I give that crew credit.  Well done.

Our guys came out rusty, but wow what a performance from Dixon.  He can sure stuff a stat sheet.  Savrasov was excellent as well.  We got consistent stops, but just couldn't seem to put the game to bed on the offensive end in the second half.  But hey a win is a win, and a win against a formidable opponent is even better!

It surprised me too that Dixon was in at the end when UCI was going to foul, and they put Dixon at the line up by 3 with seconds left, then he put both in.  Go figure.

There was a lot of fouling that didn't get called tonight. Tre really kept out of foul trouble tonight. Nice win.

Re: Game Thread - University of California Irvine Anteaters

Great win.  Really nice to see a win where we didn’t light it up from outside. Still too many misses from right at the basket but they scored when they had to. Savrosov and Dixon shined!  They played tough and exerted their will.  Dixon really grew up a lot tonight. We’ll need that inside strength when the conference games start. We are starting to see what Savrosov can bring to this team. If he can be more consistent he will be a major player for this team. I loved the way the refs let them play tonight. We may have gotten the edge with the calls but it was very consistent throughout. No cheap fouls either way really and when UC got called for a seemingly cheap one late they immediately evened it up the next time down.  It was obvious Jimmy made an effort not to get into foul trouble regardless of the leniency the refs allowed. That was great to see. Kareem hit some big shots but he also threw some possessions away. He continues to impress me though not only by the shots he is hitting but also by not trying to do too much. Just a very satisfying win against a good team. I’m excited about what comes next for these guys.

Re: Game Thread - University of California Irvine Anteaters

Anyone thinking this is the “same old Dukes” needs to watch that game again. We had the lead for probably 3/4 of the game. It did get closer than I’d like, but we finished off a team that beat USC a couple weeks ago. Most notably we beat that quality opponent despite Dae Dae and Clark combining for less than the 20 Grant usually scores himself. This team is different. Of course there’s a lot of room between the Dukes of old and a tourney team, but I think we’re closer to the latter than the former.

Re: Game Thread - University of California Irvine Anteaters

Agree 100% luckymed.
You pointed out both examples...
1.  They beat a very good team
2.   Their strength, their front court was off and the big guys made up for it

Go Dukes!

In the press conference Dambrot simply said about the game last wednesday, "You do not want me to talk about Nebraska"

BluffHunter, here’s the coach from Merrimack ripping the officiating after a 2 point loss at Georgetown. Some ref called a BS technical on the coach with less than 2 minutes left in the game. Georgetown also shot twice as many FT’s (42-21).
Worth the watch.

This is too good. A coach is saying “this is a problem in college basketball.”  If it is so rampant you have to wonder where it’s coming from.  But it is a real thing for sure. I love this coach for saying it and I love his point about the NCAA tournament
