Re: How we measure up in the A10

Notice that in spite of all the preseason hype, Rhode Island is looking like a typical team that is still early in the rebuilding process. Folks were picking them as high as fourth in the league.

Our strength of schedule is embarrassing. Any thoughts??

Re: How we measure up in the A10

The A10 wants teams to schedule with regard to expectations. Teams that are expected to contend are asked to schedule challenging games. Middle of the road teams, are to schdule middle of the road opponents. Teams that are expected to finish low in the standings are asked to schedule lightly. This is to keep the league rpi as high as possible, in the hope that we can land an extra bid ($$$$$) to the NCAA's. The league wants every team to enter league play with a winning record if possible. If the Dukes had scheduled a bunch of teams from the MAC, or Horizon, we'd be sitting here with a 2-8 record. It's ok for us to dream of the team surprising everyone, but the league has to take a more hard eyed look at things. The Dukes were picked to finish last by virtually every prognosticator out there, and we scheduled accordingly. I would expect the schedule to get tougher over the next few years.

Do you know if that has always been the case with the A10? I don't recall such a weak schedule in the past. Since AD's have a role in scheduling, I have my suspicions.

Re: How we measure up in the A10

I believe that this scheduling strategy, dictated by the A-10, has been in play for the last 5 years or so.  That being said, this is by far the weakest non-conf schedule in Duquesne's A-10 history. You probably need to go back to 07-08 to even have a somewhat comparable schedule when we played 4 300+ RPI teams.

I was actually OK with the schedule, with a dislike of paying for these games. But I am very disappointed that we are 5-5 playing this weak schedule, with 2 very bad home losses. No excuse.

As an aside, Seton Hall was receiving some buzz in the basketball press earlier this season. But their non conference schedule is worse than ours (ranked 338); they are 8-4 with 2 bad home losses to Fairleigh Dickinson and St. Peter's.

This is true. The two home losses are the killer. We should be 7-3. As for Seton Hall, pretty much the entire BE, with the exception of Vilenova, has been a disappointment. Georgetown and Marquette in particular have struggled. If those teams perform like this over the next few years, that league will quickly be slapped with the dreaded "mid major" label.
