Matus Hronsky Enters the Transfer Portal

Not overly upset about this transfer either. He never really panned out as well as I hoped he would. If his shot wasn't falling, I didn't feel he provided much else.

He played solid defense. I will miss him. But we need better scoring at the 3

Re: Matus Hronsky Enters the Transfer Portal

I enjoyed rooting for Matus, but I also thought that he was a fish out of water in terms of skill set & playing style. Neither KD nor what we have seen of Dru's basketball philosophies jibed with Hronsky's game. He also couldn't seem to maintain the irrational level of confidence that all sharpshooters must have to move from solid contributor to top player on a successful team.

His injuries & illness his freshman year were likely mishandled. Should he have been redshirted? I don’t have enough info to be sure.

There is a part of me that is concerned that if too many of these guys hit the portal that the Dukes will suffer from the loss of continuity & experience. You could do a lot worse than having senior year Matus as your 7th or 8th man.

I really hope Necas doesn't follow him out. I knew that expectations for him coming into this season were unreasonable. That competition he dominated last summer was crap. I think he will be much better as a junior.

Re: Matus Hronsky Enters the Transfer Portal

Hronsky was solid on defense. In half court, just standing in the corner for a 3 isn't all he can do. In transition several times he had an eye to pass it up court on the run. He has a nice euro-step, but seldom was set up to use it He is likely a better fit on a fast moving offense. His size and experience will get him some good teams looking at him. Good luck.

Re: Matus Hronsky Enters the Transfer Portal

Assuming Jake is healthy next year, he should take some of those minutes that Matus got this year.  There is also a possibility of Williams returning from injury.  Hall is another guy at 6’4” that hopefully can provide some scoring punch at the 2-3 spots.  DAT least on paper there are some replacement options.  Matus is bit taller than the guys I mentioned, but I think they will score more and hopefully not hurt us on defense.

Yes.  Perhaps Max has indicated to Dru that he is coming back. With Jake, that makes Matus expendable though, to Phil’s point, Matus would have been nice bench player 5-7 mins a night and providing continuity for the program. But of course he should go where he can play.

Max drives the paint, is very skilled and on a good night knocks down 3's. I really hope he comes back.

Re: Matus Hronsky Enters the Transfer Portal

Before this year I would have agreed that he was a bit of a one trick pony who didn’t really fit the mold. I thought he developed a much more complete game this year though. I think he was the most improved player this year. I still don’t think he was going to be the kind of player you can build a team around, but the 10-15 minutes a game he provided were pretty good in my eyes. I’m not devastated to see him go, but I’m old fashioned and regardless of the culture of the sport I like to see guys stay with the program and develop over four years. Either way I wish him the best wherever he ends up.
