POINT GUARD - Tarence Guinyard - 6'2"

Dru did it. We got a starting point guard coming to the Bluff. Tarence Guinyard out of Tennessee-Martin in the Ohio Valley Conference has announced on his X that he has committed to Duquesne.

The 6'2" Sophomore has 3 years of eligibility left after playing 2 years of JUCO. He averaged 16.3 ppg last year at UTM. He also averaged 2.3 assists and 4.7 rebounds per game.

Some other schools to reach out were West Virginia, Oklahoma State, & UNLV. More recent interest from Missouri & USF.  He will have 3 years of eligibilty going into the season.

This is a phenomenal get. The Dukes have their guy.

Re: POINT GUARD - Tarence Guinyard - 6'2"

Found this article from May 4th, based on this, seems like a pretty great get.

https://www.hoopshq.com/transfer-portal/transfer-portal-top-10-mens-players-available-right-now

He's #7 after Haggerty #5 and Boogie #6... and those two are pretty darn good.

I was really excited about the possibilities of Crawford and Buckley, but Guinyard might actually be a better fit.  I'll never like the portal, but Dru has done a pretty good job managing it, even if he tested the patience of the fans this season.

nice to check in and see good news after the mess the Steelers created yesterday morning!
He was a 74% FT shooter as well.

Guinyard was ranked as the 48th best guard in the Portal out of 1,300 guards. Prior to playing at UT Martin he was a JUCO All American at the same college where Tre Clark played.

Love it!  Seems to me a matter of all these guys jelling with who we have coming back.  Getting this PG though is a significant get in my view!!  Go Dukes!!

Re: POINT GUARD - Tarence Guinyard - 6'2"

Nice job, Coach Dru and staff.  I really like a lot of things in Tarance's game, but his ability to get to the FT line (and shoot a good percentage) is huge.  Tarance got to the line 178 times last year; his FT rate was 113th in the country.  The Dukes leaders last year were Corbett at 96 FTA's and Dinkins with 78 (174 combined).

I also like the fact that he has multiple years of eligibility remaining.  His defensive metrics were a bit below average, but I think that can be coached up by the Dukes staff.  Well done!

Re: POINT GUARD - Tarence Guinyard - 6'2"

Good stuff Phoenix.

He is definitely a strong scorer. He seems excellent on the drive as both a finisher & penetrator while showing nice athleticism & strength.

He has also been a great positional rebounder at all his stops. I wonder how that will translate to a higher level of competition.

Any concerns about his assist rate or the fact that one or 2 places that follow portal movements list him as a shooting guard?

phil95, definitely think he is a point guard. Haven’t dug too deeply. Not sure what kind of talent he was playing with or the type of offense they were running at Tennessee Martin, which certainly can impact your assist  rate. But I like his low turnover rate (actually lower than Rozier’s last year).

Re: POINT GUARD - Tarence Guinyard - 6'2"

It is interesting that Guinyard had 3 teammates this year with more total assists than him & that nobody else on the team scored more than 12 points per game. Perhaps Tarence was asked to be more aggressive as a scorer while others focused on doing the setup work?

I love the volume of FTs he shot. Need him to get his 3pt percentage to 35% & FT closer to 80%.

Most exciting is the 53% he shot on 2pt shots.

Re: POINT GUARD - Tarence Guinyard - 6'2"

He certainly isn’t a pass first point guard, but I think calling him a shooting guard is also inaccurate. He seems to create his own points when he scores, not rely on others to set him up (although admittedly I’m just going based on highlight reels I’ve seen since his commitment). Perhaps it’s more a result of fitting the scheme to the personnel than actual preference, but Dru seems to like versatility in his players. I wouldn’t call it true positionless basketball, but it looks to tilt that way rather than the traditional roles a lot of us are used to. From the little I’ve seen, I think Guinyard is definitely a good enough (and willing enough) passer and seems to be a good fit with what is already on the Bluff.
