Of those pedigrees I am least impressed with Ferry's "Long Island Who?" I think he's talking about the last coaching search, not the last 40 years. Ferry was the only one willing to come here. Boy, did we do Bobby Mo a favor by taking their coach. I thought it was low class, and we've paid for doing it. Offline Red retires to become A D. ALLEGED rape incident. Charges dropped. Offline I was a little unclear about former coaches, yes Satalin had been a winner, Carrol was a hot commodity after working for PJ, Scott Edgar had been a winner( I had a friendship with Scott, his situation with BC was awful, he later admitted he should have recruited more than counting on asst, DAP was forced on him, DAP was also a friend of mine and brought in Wayne Smith), Née had been a winner but his best days were over before he landed at RMU. Phil, I thought at the time that Satalin was a great hire. He had a reputation for getting the most out of his team, and for developing players. I think recruiting at Bona was a grind for him, and that he felt that once he got the train rolling here, it would be much easier to get players to come to Pittsburgh, as opposed to Olean. The rape case just killed us. It, along with the defections that crippled what likely would have been a Top 10 team in 71-72, and the shooting, have played the biggest role in keeping us from really righting the ship. Offline I know somebody is going to get their panties in a bunch because I guess the rule is you can criticize Ron and blame him for the current coach's inability to win, but if you defend him they run off crying and complaining about you on other parts of the internet. However since this thread is about coaching history I am going to add my 2 cents. Up until the hiring of Ferry Duquesne tried to do everything on the cheap, especially after the rape case. Nobody in the administration cared about basketball let alone willing to put out the resources to compete. Porter, Edgar and Nee were woefully under funded and not given the resources to compete. It is doubtful however that they would have been able to make us competitive even if they had increased resources. When Dougherty came in to his credit he modestly increased funding for Ron but still not significant in terms of competitive salaries. People make a big deal about the turnover in his staff. Ron's assistants were paid penuts compared to other teams and probsably less than half of what Ferry's assistants are making. Still Ron managed to find talent like young Pitino and the guy who went to Pitt. He was forced to take chances on high school and prep school coaches because he could not afford to hire assistants with credentials. Enter Jim Ferry. He is offered a 6 year contract @ $600,000+ a year. Why wouldn't he take a shot at DU for that money. In comparison I believe when they hired Ron they offered $200,000+. Duquesne went all in on Ferry offering the big bucks. This is the main reason I want Ferry to succeed. I am concerned that if he fails that DU will give up on basketball by going to a cheaper lower conference as the fan base continues to dwindle and revenues drop. If you go way back, many of the best local prep coaches were guys who came up under Chick Davies, the man who built the Duquesne program, and whom I consider to be our greatest coach. Moe Becker, who was one of the greatest pre-war Dukes, was Billy Knight's high school coach as a sophomore, and junior. Knight would have been a Duke if Red Manning had been willing to offer his best buddy on the team, Carl Morris, a scholarship. 1 of 1
History of Coaches since Red Manning, when Duquesne was a top program
John Cinacola hired then fired after mediocre teams. Became NBA scout.
Mike Rice hired, a winner, then fired after success and one bad year, Coached at Youngstown
Jim Satalin hired, a few good teams but rape incident stopped momentum, fired never coached again.
John Carrol hired, some success, NIT team and two NBA players produced, fired and never coached again except interim at Boston NBA when head coach fired mid season, Carrol quickly traded his starting guard and former recruit Mike James.
Scott Edgar hired, fired after lack of winning, then college asst until AD -BC was fired, head coach at S E Missouri, fired and currently JC successful coach in Oaklahoma C C
DAP hired and thrown to wolves, fired and never coached again.
Danny Née hired away from Robert Morris , failed and fired.
R E hired and was a 100 game winner with post season play, first since Mike Rice in early 1980's, fired and currently head recruiter and top asst at WVA. Bad mouthed by Duquesne President.
Jim Ferry, hired after two NCAA teams in NEC, sub par teams currently under this coach.
This is after some 40 years of Duquesne descent into the bottom of D 1 basketball programs.
Does anyone wonder why Ferry was the only one to leave a successful program to come to the graveyard for hopeful D1 coaches, excuse me if dates are wrong but I have grown into a old man following this program that used to give me butterfly's on game days as I drove to the Civic Arena to watch teams like Lefty Drisell 's Maryland of ACC come to battle Reds 18 ranked Dukes vs 17 ranked Maryland.

There are some longer tales behind some of the firings, but this is a fair summary. Nee later resumed his coaching career at the Merchant Marine Academy, but was let go after some unknown incident there.
One of the unfortunate consequences of the litany of failure is that Duquesne no longer produces coaches. Red played here. Cini played here. Rice played here. Jarrett Durham coached at Robert Morris, and took them to the NCAA Tournament. Then you skip a few generations. Kenya Hunter has been an assistant at several schools. But no DU head coaches who played at Duquesne since Rice.
Re: History of Coaches since Red Manning, when Duquesne was a top program
I meant that in the Ferry situation of hiring, no one else seemed to want to come to this graveyard, Duquesne, Edgar told me he was advised to stay away from Duquesne by his peers, but like anyone taking a new job he felt he could overcome it. It was not until BC was booted that he landed a head coach job.
RE, I loved that he made Duquesne a winner and will never forget the streak, I thought all the bad years were over, but..........
And the rape incident, I know it was alleged but it ruined a great recruiting class and our best player, just some will bee girls and a stupid DA that caused so many after effects for the university.
