@JonRothstein: Penn State's Geno Thorpe will transfer, per release. Two years of eligibility remaining.

He'll likely be blocked from coming here since we play them. No way we can have the gall to complain.

And I also don't think we have any scholarships available.

OK I don't get how DU is in the mix?
Jon Rothstein @JonRothstein 51m51 minutes ago Penn State transfer Geno Thorpe told @CBSSports he will visit USF, St. Joe's, Butler, and Nevada. Miami, UMass, and Duquesne also in mix.

My guess is that Duquesne is on the list because it is located in his home town (Shaler Twp. to be exact). Perhaps he realizes that Penn State isn't all that its cracked up to be, and he'd like to be closer to home. His family & friends could see him play every Duquesne home game without making that 3 1/2 hour haul to (no so) Happy Valley.

The Dukes don't have a spot open. Is he going to pay his own way? It's way too late to be kicking a player to the curb, and really, who would you dump to make a spot for him?

I would say james.
Is Thorpe a better player than Rene Castro? If not, I'm not going to be running anyone off for him.
I looked at his numbers. As a freshman, his numbers were similar to those James posted last year. He played more this past season, but nothing in his stats indicates that he's a true difference maker. I could see if he was 6'8", but he's not. James is bigger. I'll pass on Thorpe.

As a Penn State Hoops fan I can tell you that everyone would love Geno. He plays incredible defense. Every game he asked to defend the best player on the opposing team and was relentless. Penn State fans were really sad to see him go, myself included. He isn't a scorer, but he can slash really well.

Walk on and earn a scholarship. Guys have done it.

Agree 100%. Obviously he'd be on scholarship the following year. While Thorpe would help, I'm not a win at all costs type of guy. It would be awful to run a player off at this late date.

Thorpe is a head case who attended if I recall correctly 3 different high schools and although he did have a decent year last year has had a ton of problems both on and off the court. There is a great deal of ability hidden there I'm just not sure how to harness it. It will be interesting to see if he decides to participate in the summer league. BTW the summer league took a hit with the subtraction of Robinson and Sterling Smith from Pitt both of whom had surgery this week.

Simms, I agree wholeheartedly having seen Geno throughout his High School career, and also at Penn State. He is exactly what we don't have at Duquesne, a strong defender who will guard the opponents best backcourt scorer and make it rough on him. He is very adept off the ball getting into passing lanes and disrupting and stealing passes. In a pressing defense, he can really cause problems for the opponent. He definitely improved his offensive game this year, especially in the second half of the season. He had some nice offensive games but he is still inconsistent offensively. His 3-point shot, definitely improved and he could always slash to the hoop; but it is his defense that would make Duquesne much better. I don't know what, if anything can be worked out to get Geno on the roster, but you won't be sorry if this happens.

Maybe Matt Furjanic will do Duquesne a favor and house him for a year, expense free, at his JUCO in Florida and then ship him up north to campus ala the Vanderbilt transfer to Pitt whose name escapes me!!

No go. He can't go Juco. He's already a junior. If he can pay his way, bring him on, otherwise, NO! No running guys off at this late date!!!!

That was after Jeter's freshman year. Thorpe has already played 2 years, so he can't go to a JC.
